This second edition includes many new articles covering developments which have risen in prominence in the intervening years, such as scanning probe techniques, the surface forces apparatus and the relation between adhesion and fractal surfaces. Advances in understanding polymer - polymer interdiffusion are reflected in articles drawing out the implications for adhesive bonding. In addition, articles derived from the earlier edition have been revised and updated where needed. Throughout the book there is a renewed emphasis on environmental implications of the use of adhesives and sealants. The scope of the Handbook, which features nearly 250 articles from over 60 authors, includes the background science - physics, chemistry and material science - and engineering, and also aspects of adhesion relevant to the use of adhesives, including topics such as: Sealants and mastics Paints and coatings Printing and composite materials Welding and autohesion Engineering design The Handbook of Adhesion is intended for scientists and engineers in both academia and industry, requiring an understanding of the various facets of adhesion.

Book Structural Adhesive Joints in Engineering

Download or read book Structural Adhesive Joints in Engineering written by R. D. Adams and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intention of this book is that it should contain everything an engineer needs to know to be able to design and produce adhesively bonded joints which are required to carry significant loads. The advan tages and disadvantages of bonding are given, together with a sufficient understanding of the necessary mechanics and chemistry to enable the designer to make a sound engineering judgement in any particular case. The stresses in joints are discussed extensively so that the engineer can get sufficient philosophy or feel for them, or can delve more deeply into the mathematics to obtain quantitative solutions even with elasto plastic behaviour. A critical description is given of standard methods of testing adhesives, both destructively and non-destructively. The essen tial chemistry of adhesives and the importance of surface preparation are described and guidance is given for adhesive selection by me ans of check lists. For many applications, there will not be a unique adhesive which alone is suitable, and factors such as cost, convenience, produc tion considerations or familiarity may be decisive. A list of applications is given as examples. The authors wish to increase the confidence of engineers using adhesive bonding in load-bearing applications by the information and experience presented. With increasing experience of adhesives en gineering, design will become more elegant as weH as more fitted to its products.

Book Selection of Engineering Materials and Adhesives

Download or read book Selection of Engineering Materials and Adhesives written by Lawrence W. Fisher, P.E. and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2005-04-12 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insufficient knowledge, time limitations, and budget constraints often result in poor material selection and implementation, which can lead to uncertain performance and premature failure of mechanical and electro-mechanical products. Selection of Engineering Materials and Adhesives is a professional guide to choosing the most appropriate materials and adhesives for product development applications from the onset. This text emphasizes material properties and classifications, fabrication and processing considerations, performance objectives, and selection based on specific application requirements, such as frequency of use (duty cycle) and operating environment. Each chapter focuses on a particular material family, covering ferrous and non-ferrous metals, including steels, cast-iron, aluminum, and titanium, as well as plastics such as PVC, acrylics, and nylons. Unique to this book on material selection, the final chapter discusses critical aspects of adhesives, including cure methods and joint configurations. Selection of Engineering Materials and Adhesives presents materials that are most often used for selection processes and applications in product development. This book is an ideal text for senior level undergraduate or graduate courses in mechanical engineering and materials science as well as recent graduates or managers who are tasked with the daunting job of selecting a material for a new application or justifying a long-used material in a specific application. It embodies the author's own experience and lectures on this subject, taught at UCLA Extension, and provides students as well as practicing engineers the tools to systematically select the most appropriate materials and adhesives for their design work.

Book Adhesives in Engineering Design

Download or read book Adhesives in Engineering Design written by W.A. Lees and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The possible use of adhesives in a new design should always be considered because of the economic and technical benefits thatthey can confer. Light, stiff and economic structures, free of the blemishes caused by conventional assembly methods, can be fabricated from a variety of materials in combinations which would otherwise be hard to achieve. Similarly, mechanisms may be built up using bonding techniques which are free of the costs and stresses implicit in press fitting. Adhesives are not a panacea, but they do have a great deal to offer as is shown by the vital role they play in modern production engineering. Yet, despite this, they are not generally regarded with enthusiasm by engineers and designers. The reason for this is not hard to find. There are so many adhesives with such diverse properties that, in the absence of a unifying science which can explain not only why adhesives stick but why they behave as they do, a very strong incentive is required to guarantee perseverance. In addition, although the polymeric structures of adhesives are well understood, this knowledge is usually of little help to the engineer who is used to dealing in precise terms and may be readily put off by a subject which he tends to regard as being arcane and wooly.

Book Epoxy Adhesive Formulations

Download or read book Epoxy Adhesive Formulations written by Edward M. Petrie and published by McGraw Hill Professional. This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 553 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unmodified, epoxy resins cause certain problems for both the adhesive formulator and end-user. They are often rigid and brittle; hence, impact resistance and peel strength are poor. For decades, Chemist have been vigorously working to minimize these major shortcomings. Based on a popular course sponsored by the Society of Plastics Engineers and written by an authority in the field, this comprehensive text presents a variety of methods to accomplish what up to now has been a formidable task. Beginning with epoxy chemistry, moving on to fillers, filler treatments, and surfactants, and ending with current and future development in formulating Epoxy Adhesives, this rigorous text addressed the problem of improving flexibility, durability and strength by adding chemical groups to the epoxy structure either via the base resin or the curing agent or by adding separate flexibilizing resins to the formulation to create an epoxy-hybrid adhesive.
