Book excerpt: Since no single experimental technique is the best method for energy transfer experiments, we have used both time-dependent infrared fluorescence (IRF) and time-dependent thermal lensing (TDTL) to study energy transfer in various systems. We are investigating pump-probe techniques employing resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI). IRF was used to study benzene, azulene, and toluene. TDTL was used to study CS2 and SO2 (data not given for latter). Large molecule energy transfer mechanisms are discussed. 10 figs.

Book excerpt: As in our earlier work on the sensitized photooxidation of substituted phenylalanines, ring substituents were found to have a marked effect on the photooxidation of uracil. This compound was selected as a typical pyrimidine for detailed studies of the mechanism of photooxidation of molecules of biological importance. The photooxidation of a series of 5-substituted uracils as sensitized by eosin Y, ruthenium bipyridyl, 3-methyl-lumiflavin and methylene blue was studied using oxygen electrode and flash photolysis techniques. Different substituents had very different effects on the rates of photooxidation with a given dye, and some substituents could shift the mechanism from a singlet oxygen pathway to an electron abstraction pathway (or vice versa). A study of the effects of porphyrin structure in relation to photosensitizing characteristics was completed. An examination of the localized selective photooxidation of amino acids in the vicinity of the heme binding site of horseradish peroxidase was made using specifically-bound protoporphyrin IX and other porphyrins as sensitizers. Preliminary studies were carried out on the use of sensitized photooxidation as a tool to study the contribution of histidine-containing crosslinks to the mechanical-thermal properties of mammalian tendon as well as the role of membrane properties in determining the rate and direction of swimming of certain microorganisms.

Book excerpt: The overall objective of the research carried out under this program is to determine the principles of collisional energy transfer and use them in predictive models and theories. In order to accomplish this goal, energy transfer properties must be determined and then analyzed to discern the underlying principles involved. In this laboratory, the experimental determination of energy transfer parameters is based on techniques that use physical properties to monitor the amount of energy in excited molecules. These techniques differ from chemical methods, based on unimolecular reaction studies, which are susceptible to interferences from complex chemical mechanisms and other complications. The physical methods have their own weaknesses and limitations, however, and much of our effort has been directed toward gaining a better understanding of these deficiencies. Two physical techniques have been proved to be particularly useful: time-resolved infrared fluorescence (IRF) and time-dependent thermal lensing (TDTL). As described later, we will shortly begin work using resonance enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) techniques to investigate energy transfer in bulbs and half collisions'' in free jets. We also have completed some experiments and model calculations which explore the approximations we previously have used in calculating infrared emission from highly excited molecules.
