Book U S Energy R D Policy

Download or read book U S Energy R D Policy written by John E. Tilton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past few decades there has been an advance in the research and development of solving the issue of declining energy resources. Funding by the U.S. government into energy research has risen steeply. Because of the growing importance of research and development in this field of research, in 1973 Resources for the Future undertook a study of energy-associated study, including an investigation of how research on energy R & D itself could be carried out. This title, first published in 1974, assesses a wide range of ways in which economics could contribute to decisions on where and in what amounts government R & D money should be spent. The report also evaluates the research and development approach in relation to other public energy policies or management tools. The book will be of interest to students of environmental studies and economics.

Book excerpt: The primary purpose of energy research is to help implement and advance energy policy. Energy research reveals new possibilities and new options that ought to influence energy policy. Project Independence, dominated by our commitment to energy self-sufficiency, is our shorter term energy policy, but is not the entire energy policy. Decisions are now being made concerning nuclear plant siting and conservation that go much beyond any immediate commitment to self-sufficiency. Both energy policy and energy research and development strategy are presently in transition, largely due to new governmental structures being created. Even when ERDA and FEA are in place, there will remain the matter of assuring that ERDA research policies are consistent with FEA energy policies and that FEA energy policies take adequate account of the new options created by ERDA's studies. Long-range modalities - solar, geothermal, fusion, fission breeders - are briefly discussed.

Book Understanding the Global Energy Crisis

Download or read book Understanding the Global Energy Crisis written by Richard A. Simmons and published by Purdue University Press. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are facing a global energy crisis caused by world population growth, an escalating increase in demand, and continued dependence on fossil-based fuels for generation. It is widely accepted that increases in greenhouse gas concentration levels, if not reversed, will result in major changes to world climate with consequential effects on our society and economy. This is just the kind of intractable problem that Purdue University's Global Policy Research Institute seeks to address in the Purdue Studies in Public Policy series by promoting the engagement between policy makers and experts in fields such as engineering and technology. Major steps forward in the development and use of technology are required. In order to achieve solutions of the required scale and magnitude within a limited timeline, it is essential that engineers be not only technologically-adept but also aware of the wider social and political issues that policy-makers face. Likewise, it is also imperative that policy makers liaise closely with the academic community in order to realize advances. This book is designed to bridge the gap between these two groups, with a particular emphasis on educating the socially-conscious engineers and technologists of the future. In this accessibly-written volume, central issues in global energy are discussed through interdisciplinary dialogue between experts from both North America and Europe. The first section provides an overview of the nature of the global energy crisis approached from historical, political, and sociocultural perspectives. In the second section, expert contributors outline the technology and policy issues facing the development of major conventional and renewable energy sources. The third and final section explores policy and technology challenges and opportunities in the distribution and consumption of energy, in sectors such as transportation and the built environment. The book's epilogue suggests some future scenarios in energy distribution and use.

Book New Approaches on Energy and the Environment

Download or read book New Approaches on Energy and the Environment written by Richard D. Professor Morgenstern and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by economists and policy analysts at Resources for the Future, a Washington, DC, think tank with a tradition for independent, objective research, this collection of twenty-five 'memos to the President' offers constructive policy options for the elected administration on critical challenges related to energy, the environment, and natural resources. Each contributor to New Approaches on Energy and the Environment was asked to address the question: 'Based on your research and knowledge, what policy recommendation would you like to make to the next U.S. president?' Writing in advance of the 2004 election so as to keep their essays free of partisan interpretations, the authors were asked not to confine their suggestions to what the prevailing wisdom says is politically possible. They also took pains to make their ideas accessible to a busy president as well as a wide range of readers interested in a concise and authoritative overview of the nation's energy and environmental policy choices. The results are provocative, sometimes controversial, but highly readable essays on topics including climate change, oil dependency, electricity regulation, brownfields revitalization, forest service administration, air and water quality, and environmental health issues such as food safety and the growing threat of antibiotic resistance. When the President takes office in January, 2005, he will confront competing perspectives about the priorities and approaches that should apply to energy and environmental policy: Americans want cleaner air and water and healthy and attractive surroundings, but they also want inexpensive fuel, comfortable cars and houses, and continued economic growth. New Approaches on Energy and the Environment provides thought-provoking, commonsense contributions to debates about important energy and environmental issues confronting the U.S. today.
