Book Policy Implications of Greenhouse Warming

Download or read book Policy Implications of Greenhouse Warming written by National Academy of Engineering and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1992-02-01 with total page 945 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming continues to gain importance on the international agenda and calls for action are heightening. Yet, there is still controversy over what must be done and what is needed to proceed. Policy Implications of Greenhouse Warming describes the information necessary to make decisions about global warming resulting from atmospheric releases of radiatively active trace gases. The conclusions and recommendations include some unexpected results. The distinguished authoring committee provides specific advice for U.S. policy and addresses the need for an international response to potential greenhouse warming. It offers a realistic view of gaps in the scientific understanding of greenhouse warming and how much effort and expense might be required to produce definitive answers. The book presents methods for assessing options to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, offset emissions, and assist humans and unmanaged systems of plants and animals to adjust to the consequences of global warming.

Book A Transportation Research Program for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Change and Conserving Energy

Download or read book A Transportation Research Program for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Change and Conserving Energy written by Transportation Research Board and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-01-14 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In reviewing proposals for transportation research programs as part of reauthorizing the federal surface transportation program, the Transportation Research Board recognized a gap: no proposals explicitly addressed research to mitigate GHG emissions and energy consumption attributable to passenger and freight travel or to adapt to climate change. A Transportation Research Program for Mitigating and Adapting to Climate Change and Conserving Energy is the product of a study to suggest research programs to fill this and other perceived gaps. Specifically, this book identifies research needs with regard to policies and strategies relating to the use of the transportation system and to assist infrastructure owners in adapting to climate change; focuses on research programs that could provide guidance to officials at all levels responsible for policies that affect the use of surface transportation infrastructure and its operation, maintenance, and construction; and aims to help officials begin to adapt the infrastructure to climate changes that are already occurring or that are expected to occur in the next several decades.

Book Transportation Energy Conservation in the Federal Government

Download or read book Transportation Energy Conservation in the Federal Government written by United States. General Accounting Office and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efforts under the Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) to develop and promote a transportation energy conservation program as envisioned and authorized have not been developed and implemented. The Department of Energy (DOE) is responsible for energy conservation in the federal government, the largest single user of energy in the nation. DOE has not provided guidance to federal agencies in developing plans to conserve and goals to reduce consumption of transportation energy. DOE ineffectiveness in managing a transportation energy conservation program is due to the lack of organizational emphasis. The primary effort relating to the transportation area has been to collect and compile energy consumption data reported by federal agencies. While agencies individually have implemented conservation programs, energy use reductions are more directly related to mission changes, reduced levels of operation, and rising costs of energy.
