Book Situating Everyday Life

Download or read book Situating Everyday Life written by Sarah Pink and published by SAGE. This book was released on 2012-04-20 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of everyday life is fundamental to our understanding of modern society. This agenda-setting book provides a coherent, interdisciplinary way to engage with everyday activities and environments. Arguing for an innovative, ethnographic approach, it uses detailed examples, based in real world and digital research, to bring its theories to life. The book focuses on the sensory, embodied, mobile and mediated elements of practice and place as a route to understanding wider issues. By doing so, it convincingly outlines a robust theoretical and methodological approach to understanding contemporary everyday life and activism. A fresh, timely book, this is an excellent resource for students and researchers of everyday life, activism and sustainability across the social sciences.

Book Energy Efficiency in Household Appliances

Download or read book Energy Efficiency in Household Appliances written by Paolo Bertoldi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is widespread interest throughout the world in improving appliance energy efficiency. Methods to reach that end include energy labeling, energy efficiency standards and market conditioning (e.g, energy efficient procurement and DSM programs). Energy efficiency standards, which started out as an action to reduce demand for energy in individual countries, has now become a subject of regional and even worldwide dimension, particularly in the context of global climate change mitigation. Mandatory energy efficiency standards are in place for some appliances in China, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines and the United States. Standards for refrigerator/freezers will take effect in Australia and the European Union in 1999. Voluntary energy efficiency standards are in place for refrigerators in Brazil, India and Korea and for air conditioners in India, Japan and Korea. Table I showed potential global energy use reductions from codes and standards in buildings. If individual country data can be assembled, a more accurate approach to estimating potential reductions in energy use and carbon emissions would be to perform a bottom-up analysis for energy using equipment on an end-use basis in as many large developing countries as possible. The impact of standards would be assessed as more efficient appliances replaced existing stock models and new purchases that increased saturation rates were made at higher efficiencies than would otherwise be the case. This approach would show the slow but steady buildup of annual energy savings from efficiency standards or other programs to improve energy efficiency.

Book Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment in Industrial Biotechnology

Download or read book Sustainability and Life Cycle Assessment in Industrial Biotechnology written by Magnus Fröhling and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the assessment of industrial biotechnology products and processes from a sustainable perspective. Industrial Biotechnology is a comparably young field which comes along with high expectations with regard to sustainability issues. These stem from the promise of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and replacing fossil resources in the near or later future and using green technology, i.e. more environmentally friendly technologies. The intended economic, ecological and social benefits, however, need to be proven, resulting in a variety of challenges, both from a methodological and application point of view. In this book, specific assessment and application topics of industrial biotechnology are addressed, highlighting challenges and solutions for both developers and users of assessment methods. In twelve chapters, experts in their particular fields define the scope, characterize industrial biotechnology and show in their contributions the state of the art, challenges and prospects of assessing industrial biotechnology products and processes. The chapter 'Societal and Ethical Aspects of Industrial Biotechnology' of this book is available open access under a CC BY 4.0 license at link.springer.com

Book Optimization and Security Challenges in Smart Power Grids

Download or read book Optimization and Security Challenges in Smart Power Grids written by Vijay Pappu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of state-of-the-art research on “Systems and Optimization Aspects of Smart Grid Challenges.” The authors have compiled and integrated different aspects of applied systems optimization research to smart grids, and also describe some of its critical challenges and requirements. The promise of a smarter electricity grid could significantly change how consumers use and pay for their electrical power, and could fundamentally reshape the current Industry. Gaining increasing interest and acceptance, Smart Grid technologies combine power generation and delivery systems with advanced communication systems to help save energy, reduce energy costs and improve reliability. Taken together, these technologies support new approaches for load balancing and power distribution, allowing optimal runtime power routing and cost management. Such unprecedented capabilities, however, also present a set of new problems and challenges at the technical and regulatory levels that must be addressed by Industry and the Research Community.

Book Consumption Corridors

Download or read book Consumption Corridors written by Doris Fuchs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-03-04 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consumption Corridors: Living a Good Life within Sustainable Limits explores how to enhance peoples’ chances to live a good life in a world of ecological and social limits. Rejecting familiar recitations of problems of ecological decline and planetary boundaries, this compact book instead offers a spirited explication of what everyone desires: a good life. Fundamental concepts of the good life are explained and explored, as are forces that threaten the good life for all. The remedy, says the book’s seven international authors, lies with the concept of consumption corridors, enabled by mechanisms of citizen engagement and deliberative democracy. Across five concise chapters, readers are invited into conversation about how wellbeing can be enriched by social change that joins "needs satisfaction" with consumerist restraint, social justice, and environmental sustainability. In this endeavour, lower limits of consumption that ensure minimal needs satisfaction for all are important, and enjoy ample precedent. But upper limits to consumption, argue the authors, are equally essential, and attainable, especially in those domains where limits enhance rather than undermine essential freedoms. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in the social sciences and humanities, and environmental and sustainability studies, as well as to community activists and the general public.

Book Sustainable Innovations in the Textile Industry

Download or read book Sustainable Innovations in the Textile Industry written by Roshan Paul and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2024-06-27 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainable Innovations in the Textile Industry addresses advances taking place at every stage of the textile supply chain leading to improvements in sustainability and resource efficiency. There is a significant emphasis on respect for the environment in current thinking around textiles, which contrasts with the impression many have of the industry due to its impact on global pollution over the past century. A key strength of the book is its comprehensive coverage of the complete textile process sequence, including fibre to textile manufacture, dyeing, printing, finishing, and effluent discharge. This holistic approach is required to effectively address the sustainability issue, which is requires action across the supply chain. In addition, it also provides the latest industry knowledge on technological advances in knitting, non-wovens, speciality chemicals, coating, printing, finishing and other methods that increase sustainability. Including historical aspects of sustainability in textiles as well as the state of the art in innovative sustainable fibers and manufacturing processes, this book is essential reading for anyone interested in sustainable directions in the textile industry. - Emphasizes innovative production technologies, the biotransformation of the textile industry, the circular economy, recycling, and the green future of textiles - Addresses sustainability in business and logistics, explaining how these functions influence the environmental impact of other stages of the value chain - Provides a guide to the eco-labels and assessment methods used by industry
