Book Wyndham Lewis and the Avant Garde

Download or read book Wyndham Lewis and the Avant Garde written by Toby Foshay and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 1992 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has always been difficult to determine Wyndham Lewis's position within the Modernist movement. Despite his status as one of the "big five" modernists -- along with W.B. Yeats, T.S. Eliot, Ezra Pound, and James Joyce -- Lewis is the least read and least understood of significant modern English writers. At once both modernist and anti-modernist -- Lewis was a founder, before the First World War, of Vorticism and a critic, after the war, of what he considered modernism's sell-out to the art establishment -- he has remained the most obscure and the least easily categorized of the canonical modernists.

Book Late Modernism

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tyrus Miller
  • Publisher : Univ of California Press
  • Release : 1999-02-25
  • ISBN : 9780520921993
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Late Modernism written by Tyrus Miller and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tyrus Miller breaks new ground in this study of early twentieth-century literary and artistic culture. Whereas modernism studies have generally concentrated on the vital early phases of the modernist revolt, Miller focuses on the turbulent later years of the 1920s and 1930s, tracking the dissolution of modernism in the interwar years. In the post-World War I reconstruction and the worldwide crisis that followed, Miller argues, new technological media and the social forces of mass politics opened fault lines in individual and collective experience, undermining the cultural bases of the modernist movement. He shows how late modernists attempted to discover ways of occupying this new and often dangerous cultural space. In doing so they laid bare the ruin of the modernist aesthetic at the same time as they transcended its limits. In his wide-ranging theoretical and historical discussion, Miller relates developments in literary culture to tendencies in the visual arts, cultural and political criticism, mass culture, and social history. He excavates Wyndham Lewis's hidden borrowings from Al Jolson's The Jazz Singer; situates Djuna Barnes between the imagery of haute couture and the intellectualism of Duchamp; uncovers Beckett's affinities with Giacometti's surrealist sculptures and the Bolshevik clowns Bim-Bom; and considers Mina Loy as both visionary writer and designer of decorative lampshades. Miller's lively and engaging readings of culture in this turbulent period reveal its surprising anticipation of our own postmodernity.

Book An American Utopia

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fredric Jameson
  • Publisher : Verso Books
  • Release : 2016-07-12
  • ISBN : 1784784516
  • Pages : 371 pages

Download or read book An American Utopia written by Fredric Jameson and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2016-07-12 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fredric Jameson's pathbreaking essay "An American Utopia" radically questions standard leftist notions of what constitutes an emancipated society. Advocated here are-among other things-universal conscription, the full acknowledgment of envy and resentment as a fundamental challenge to any communist society, and the acceptance that the division between work and leisure cannot be overcome. To create a new world, we must first change the way we envision the world. Jameson's text is ideally placed to trigger a debate on the alternatives to global capitalism. In addition to Jameson's essay, the volume includes responses from philosophers and political and cultural analysts, as well as an epilogue from Jameson himself. Many will be appalled at what they will encounter in these pages-there will be blood! But perhaps one has to spill such (ideological) blood to give the Left a chance.

Book Dreams of a Totalitarian Utopia

Download or read book Dreams of a Totalitarian Utopia written by Leon Surette and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2011-07-25 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While these authors' political inclinations are well known and much discussed, previous studies have failed to adequately analyse the surrounding political circumstances that informed the specific utopian aspirations in each writer's works. Balancing a thorough knowledge of their works with an understanding of the political climate of the early twentieth century, Leon Surette provides new insights into the motivations and development of each writer's respective political postures. Dreams of a Totalitarian Utopia examines their political commentary and their correspondence with each other from 1910s to the 1950s. Contextualizing their political thought in a world troubled by two world wars, the Great Depression, and the Bolshevik Revolution, Surette traces their shared concerns and the divergent responses of each of these figures in the historical moment to the risk they perceived of democracies becoming the pawns of commercial and industrial elites, leading to war and mindless consumerism. They all leaned toward autocratic solutions, though Pound and Lewis eventually admitted their error.

Book Wyndham Lewis and the Cultures of Modernity

Download or read book Wyndham Lewis and the Cultures of Modernity written by Andrzej Gąsiorek and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2011 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making a strong case for a revaluation of Wyndham Lewis, this collection argues that significant aspects of Lewis's writing, painting and thinking have not yet received the attention they deserve. Lewis's contributions to the production and circulation of modernism and the links between Lewis's writing and painting are explored in the context of other key figures of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good Soldier A Tale of Passion by Ford Madox Ford At the fashionable German spa town Bad Nauheim, two wealthy, fin de siecle couples - one British, the other American - meet for their yearly assignation. As their story moves back and forth in time between 1902 and 1914, the fragile surface propriety of the pre - World War I society in which these four characters live is ruptured - revealing deceit, hatred, infidelity, and betrayal. "The Good Soldier" is Edward Ashburnham, who, as an adherent to the moral code of the English upper class, is nonetheless consumed by a passion for women younger than his wife - a stoic but fallible figure in what his American friend, John Dowell, calls "the saddest story I ever heard."
