Download or read book Exercises in Translation written by Joy Charnley and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2006 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 2002 to 2004 Présence Suisse funded a 'Swiss Fellow in the UK' programme in five universities in the four regions of the United Kingdom which enabled a Swiss writer or academic to be based in one university and to undertake short visits to the other four. Three Swiss Fellows, each writing in one of the official languages of Switzerland, took part. This book marks the success of the programme and the events which it generated by assembling contributions from participants and organisers and from others involved in Swiss studies in the United Kingdom. The essays deal with aspects of perception and mediation which occur in the interchange between two countries. There are views of each country acquired by citizens of the other through travel or short sojourns; comments on the effect on their writing from writers who have adopted the other country by living there permanently; and accounts of interchange through critical appreciation, translation and cultural borrowing.

Focusing on the development of different processes employed by service organizations, the book emphasizes management of service in relation to products. It not only explores the complexity of this relationship, but also introduces strategies used in the design and management of service across various sectors, highlighting where tools, techniques and processes applicable to one sector may prove useful in another. The implementation methods introduced in the book also illustrate how and why companies can transform themselves into service organizations. While the book is primarily intended as a text for advanced-level courses in service design and delivery, it also contains theoretical and practical knowledge beneficial to both practitioners in the service sector and those in manufacturing contemplating moving towards service delivery.

Download or read book The Garden History of Devon written by Todd Gray and published by University of Exeter Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Garden History of Devon is a reference guide to historical sources for over 200 Devon gardens. It also provides an introduction for would-be garden historians on how to conduct garden research. The book is the result of an exploration of the archival resources of Devon's garden history; the objective being to provide signposts to research material for those interested in the development of Devon's gardens. The entries, arranged alphabetically, begin with a brief section describing each garden's history, amplified by quotations from contemporary travellers and diarists; following the descriptive sections are listings of documents, printed sources and illustrations relating to each garden. The greater part of this material is unknown to garden historians.

Download or read book A Morning After War written by K. J. Gilchrist and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Morning After War fills a critical gap in C. S. Lewis biographies with unprecedented detail by tracing Lewis's wartime service, relationships, and earliest publications. Probing war's traumatic destruction upon Lewis's romantic expectations of tranquil life, this book surpasses literary analyses of Lewis's work by asserting a comprehensive definition of war literature. Equally, scholars and students of World War I, war literature, trauma studies, and C. S. Lewis will find this work an invaluable reassessment of central assumptions in their fields. Not least, here finally is the young C. S. Lewis preceding his usual and often idolized personas.

Download or read book The Picturesque written by John Macarthur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fresh and authoritative account John Macarthur presents the eighteenth century idea of the picturesque – when it was a risky term concerned with a refined taste for everyday things, such as the hovels of the labouring poor – in the light of its reception and effects in modern culture. In a series of linked essays Macarthur shows: what the concept of picture does in the picturesque and how this relates to modern theories of the image how the distaste that might be felt today at the sentimentality of the picturesque was already at play in the eighteenth century how visual values such as ‘irregularity’ become the basis of modern architectural planning; how the concept of appropriating a view moves from landscape design into urban design why movement is fundamental to picturing the stillness of buildings, cities and landscapes. Drawing on examples from architecture, art and broader culture, John Macarthur's account of this key topic in cultural history, makes engaging reading for all those studying architecture, art history, cultural history or visual studies.
