Download or read book Reproductive Endocrinology written by P. Jorge Chedrese and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-13 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Molecular biology emerged from advances in biochemistry during the 1940s and 1950s, when the structure of the nucleic acids and proteins were elucidated. Beginning in the 1970s, with nucleic acid enzymology and the discovery of the restriction enzymes, the tools of molecular biology became widely available and applied in cell biology to study how genes are regulated. This new knowledge impacted endocrinology and reproductive biology since it was largely known that the secretion of the internal glands affected the phenotypes, and expression of genes. Modern reproductive biology encompasses every level of biological study from genomics to ecology, encompassing cell biology, biochemistry, endocrinology and general physiology. All of these disciplines require a basic knowledge, both as a tool and as an essential aid to a fundamental understanding of the principles of life in health and disease. Overall, molecular biology is central to scientific studies in all living matter, impacting disciplines such as medicine, related health sciences, veterinary, agriculture and environmental sciences. In this book, the basic biochemistry of nucleic acids and proteins are reviewed. Methodologies used to study signaling and gene regulation in the endocrine/reproductive system are also discussed. Topics include mechanisms of hormone action and several endocrine disorders affecting the reproductive system. Professionals in the medical, veterinary and animal sciences fields will find exciting and stimulating material enhancing the breadth and quality of their research.

Book Neuroendocrinology of Reproduction

Download or read book Neuroendocrinology of Reproduction written by Norman T. Adler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 571 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is neuroendocrinology, that branch of biological science devoted to the interactions between the two major integrative organ systems of animals-the endocrine and nervous systems. Although this science today reflects a fusion of endocrinology and neurobiology, this synthetic ap proach is relatively recent. At the beginning of the 20th century, when the British physiologists, Bayliss and Starling, first proposed endocrinology to be an independent field of inquiry, they went to great lengths to establish the autonomy of chemical secretions in general and their independence from nervous control in particular (Bayliss, W. M. , and Starling, E. H. , 1902, The mechanism of pancreatic secretion,]. Physiol. 28:325). They argued with Pav lov, who said that there was a strong influence of the nervous system on the gastrointestinal phenomena the endocrinologists were studying. For several decades, the English physiologists prevailed, at least in the West; and Pavlov's critique was not taken to heart by the practitioners of the newly emerging discipline of endocrinology. Through the work of Harris, the Scharrers, Sawyer, Everett, and others, there has been something of a scientific detente in the latter half of this century; the hybrid field of neuroendocrinology is now regarded as one of the corner stones of modern neural science and is of fundamental importance in basic and clinical endocrinology.

Book Metabolic and Endocrine Physiology Third Edition

Download or read book Metabolic and Endocrine Physiology Third Edition written by Larry Engelking and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-08-15 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to give readers a “quick look” at metabolic and endocrine physiology. Emphasis is placed on instructional figures, flow diagrams and tables, while text material has been held to a minimum. In general, the endocrine system is first defined and described, and then each endocrine gland is discussed separately. Where appropriate, common endocrine disorders have also been included. This text concisely elucidates the endocrine mechanisms responsible for maintaining homeostatic control of important physiologic variables, and to assist the reader in understanding common pathophysiologic deviations from normal. Over 360 multiple-choice questions gauge the reader’s capacity to effectively understand the subject material. This new edition contains six new chapters covering: hormone disposition, measurement and secretion; bovine, equine and rodent estrus cycles; primate menstrual cycle; male reproductive system; testosterone, estrogen and progesterone; comparative aspects of endocrinology. Learning objectives have been added at the beginning of each chapter and all of the questions are new.

Book Recent updates in molecular Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology of Fish

Download or read book Recent updates in molecular Endocrinology and Reproductive Physiology of Fish written by Jitendra Kumar Sundaray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is dedicated to present different aspects of reproductive physiology and molecular endocrinology of commercially important as well as potential aquaculture fish species. The existing aquaculture generation is looking for species diversification for efficient utilization of available diverse water resources. The knowledge of reproductive physiology of fish will help in development of breeding strategy for use in commercial aquaculture. Reproductive system is highly coordinated and governed by means of complex network of nervous, endocrine system and environmental factor as well. This book emphasize on different key aspects of reproductive endocrine system such as basic gonadal biology in the events of climate vulnerability, sex determination, sex reversal, stimulatory hormones, inhibitory hormones and receptors, environmental and chemical factor guiding reproduction, puberty, neuroendocrine regulation of reproduction etc. This book further describes how reproduction is not just indispensable for the existence or survival of an individual, but it is important for the survival of species. Chapters also address the concerns of anthropogenic activities on fish and the aquatic environment lead main trouble on physiological and reproductive processes of aquatic animals. This book offers an attractive compilation of highly relevant aspects of current and future of aquaculture, especially in view of the growing awareness of aquaculture, to food scientists working on commercial fish, animal biologists, fish geneticists etc. This book is very timely, and relevant to the sustainable development goals. The contents would be relevant to policy makers, working towards blue revolution and blue economy.
