Book excerpt: "Drawing on a superb collection of rare photographs this sequel to Battle in the Baltic States 1944-45 covers the last battles fought by the Wehrmacht and their SS counterparts in East Prussia, Pomerania and the West Prussian city of Danzig ... The book provides ... insight into this long, most bitter and most unknown Eastern Front campaign. It reveals how the remnants of Hitler's once-vaunted forces were hurled out of the Baltic States and ordered to wage an unprecedented war of attrition against an overwhelming foe. Here is East and West Prussia, Pomerania and the ancient city of Danzig the Germans stood on the fringes of the Reich and fought a series of colossal battles ... The Last Rally is a unique study of a struggling German Army trying in vain to avoid being sucked into a maelstrom of destruction. It was the final desperate attempt by the German forces to hold onto land conquered by the Reich during its conquest through Poland five years earlier. Now, as tension, turmoil and tragedy reached its peak in the ruined villages, towns and cities, the ethnic Germans, or so-called Volksdeutche, fled their homes to avoid the Red Army's advance. What followed was a mass exodus of men, women and children intermingled with withdrawing German troops trying to stave off defeat"--Page 7.

Download or read book The Mons Myth written by Terence Zuber and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conventional histories of the Battles of Mons and Le Cateau describe how, although the British were massively outnumbered, precise and rapid rifle fire mowed down rows of German troops: the staggering casualties inflicted made both British victories, and set the stage for the Battle of the Marne. But neither encounter has ever been described in English from the German point of view. Using German tactics manuals and regimental histories, Terence Zuber re-examines the battles at Mons and Le Cateau, subjecting British tactics to a critique that goes beyond admiration for rapid rifle fire and presenting new and startling perspectives, showing how the Germans employed a high degree of tactical sophistication in conducting combined-arms operations. The odds were, in fact, even, and German casualties never reached the levels described in the standard histories. ' The Mons Myth' is the first history of these battles to take this approach in ninety years, and completely changes our understanding of what actually happened.

Book Panzers in the Defence of Festung Posen 1945

Download or read book Panzers in the Defence of Festung Posen 1945 written by Maciej Karalus and published by Helion. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Panzers in Defence of Festung Poznan 1945 by Maciej Karalus and Jarosław Jerzak is the first book published in English to describe the bitter battle for Festung Poznań in 1945. That Polish city, occupied by the Nazis since almost the very beginning of the Second World War in 1939, was declared a fortress (Festung) on January 20, 1945, and for the whole month it saw heavy fighting between Wehrmacht and Waffen SS troops and the Red Army advancing directly towards Berlin. Among the garrison of the fortress a special part was played by a small heavy Panzer unit which possessed just one Tiger tank, two Panthers, one Panzer IV and a handful of Sturmgeschtze. Despite the difficulty and sparsity of sources, the authors were able to acquire an impressive wealth of information and memoirs, as well as rich iconography. Before Poland was able to regain her full political autonomy in 1990, the fighting in Poznań was described only by Zbigniew Szumowski and Stanisław Okęcki. These, however, were poor compilations, only marginally touching upon the participation of German Wehrmacht. These authors looked upon this subject through the lenses of Soviet documentations and historiographical propaganda of their times. Sadly, they could not or would not make use of the documents in German archives. Their cardinal mistake was to overestimate the strength of the forces at play (especially on the German side), and the glorification of the Soviet victory, foregoing an honest analysis of the losses of human life as well as equipment on both sides. This is the first book in English that allows the reader to follow the street fighting in Poznań through the eyes of the Wehrmacht soldiers, documenting the story of the German armored forces engaged in the battles for the city.

Book Bautzen 1945

Download or read book Bautzen 1945 written by Eduardo Manuel Gil Martínez and published by Soldiershop Publishing. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last clear German victory in World War II occurred in the last days of April 1945 during the defense, loss and subsequent recovery of the Saxon city of Bautzen. On that occasion, when all was lost, the remnants of once powerful German units, such as the Panzer Divions Hermann Göring, Brandeburg or Grossdeutschland, inflicted a total defeat on the proud Soviet-Polish units, more robust and better armed, that supported the Red Army advance towards the capital of the Reich. This text tells the story of the events that took place in that city, the capital of Upper Lusatia, just south of the German capital. The high efficiency of the German soldiers made the difference with a real state of an army by then in decay and with no more fuel, showing how the fighting spirit was kept high until the end thanks to the concrete possibility of stopping the Soviets, even if only for a few hours or days, in their overwhelming advance to allow the evacuation of the greatest number of Germans people towards the West of the country. An innovative work this one by Gil Martínez, that will certainly occupy, together with the previous one already published in Breslau 1945, a special place in the library of all those who are interested in the military history of the last terrible world conflict.

Book Combat and Genocide on the Eastern Front

Download or read book Combat and Genocide on the Eastern Front written by Jeff Rutherford and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 1944, the overwhelming majority of the German Army had participated in the German war of annihilation in the Soviet Union and historians continue to debate the motivations behind the violence unleashed in the east. Jeff Rutherford offers an important new contribution to this debate through a study of combat and the occupation policies of three frontline infantry divisions. He shows that while Nazi racial ideology provided a legitimizing context in which violence was not only accepted but encouraged, it was the Wehrmacht's adherence to a doctrine of military necessity which is critical in explaining why German soldiers fought as they did. This meant that the German Army would do whatever was necessary to emerge victorious on the battlefield. Periods of brutality were intermixed with conciliation as the army's view and treatment of the civilian population evolved based on its appreciation of the larger context of war in the east.
