Some of this work is for wages, some is on their family’s own small plots and some is forced and/or harmful. This book examines children’s involvement in such work. It argues that framing all children’s engagement in economic activity as ‘child labour’, with all the associated negative connotations, is problematic. This is particularly the case in Africa where many rural children must work to survive and where, the contributors argue, much of the work undertaken is not harmful. The conceptual and case-based chapters reframe the debate about children’s work and harm in rural Africa with the aim of shifting research, public discourse and policy so that they better serve the interest of rural children and their families.

Recent media reports, from shooting and racial violence in the US to the latest news from ISIS-dominated areas provide a darker vision: it is certainly not a time for children; it is a time during which children’s wellbeing is being the cause of worry. This book is about schools and protection of children, and proposes ways to ensure the minimum standards of safety in schools. The issue of protection is not only important in specific conflict settings, but also more and more in mainstream schools in the Western context. Therefore the book is not focusing on a specific geographic area, but analyzing various contexts of adversity, including those affected by poverty, high incidence of HIV/AIDS, as well as conflict and post conflict-affected areas. It also illustrates the effects of such contexts: • non-enrollment of children or early dropout from school; • various forms of abuse and bullying at home and school; • increased incidence of child marriage; • abusive child labor, and in some cases, the worst forms of child labor. The school emerges as an institution that could play a stronger role in protection of children and that also could provide better support in the transition from childhood to work and marriage.

Most Americans are unaware of this fact or the physical injuries sustained by countless school children who are hit with objects by school personnel in the name of discipline. Therefore, Corporal Punishment in U.S. Public Schools begins by summarizing the legal basis for school corporal punishment and trends in Americans’ attitudes about it. It then presents trends in the use of school corporal punishment in the United States over time to establish its past and current prevalence. It then discusses what is known about the effects of school corporal punishment on children, though with so little research on this topic, much of the relevant literature is focused on parents’ use of corporal punishment with their children. It also provides results from a policy analysis that examines the effect of state-level school corporal punishment bans on trends in juvenile crime. It concludes by discussing potential legal, policy, and advocacy avenues for abolition of school corporal punishment at the state and federal levels as well as summarizing how school corporal punishment is being used and what its potential implications are for thousands of individual students and for the society at large. It highlights some progress including awareness raising laws and policies to prevent and address VAC. However, progress has been slow, uneven and too fragmented to bring violence to an end. Most children exposed to violence live in isolation, loneliness, and fear and do not know where to turn for help, especially when the perpetrator is someone close and on whom they depend for their protection and well-being. Governments must increase efforts to practice these recommendations identified in the 2006 UN Study to make them a reality for every child in every country. This comprehensive survey provides important examples of initiatives that successfully shield children from violence and address the attitudes that allow it to flourish. It is being issued as Member States deepen their efforts to define a post-2015 development agenda and ensure an appropriate institutional response.
