Book Ending Slavery in the Corporate Supply Chain

Download or read book Ending Slavery in the Corporate Supply Chain written by Richard Herder and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-09-16 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is a Florida-based farmworkers’ cooperative that has received international acclaim for sponsoring anti-slavery investigations. In 2011, they worked with commercial tomato growers to found the Fair Food Program, a private sector agreement that operates according to the principles of worker-driven social responsibility (WSR). Researchers have lauded WSR as an alternative to traditional corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs, which have failed to curb human exploitation in global markets. The Fair Food Program has been credited with ending slavery and other human rights abuses in Florida’s tomato industry and is now expanding to other sectors of the food economy in the United States and several other nations. Researchers have called for WSR programs to be included in a “smart mix” of public and private initiatives aimed at abolishing slavery and other types of exploitation in global supply chains. The book introduces a theory of ensemble storytelling to explain how the CIW has been able to animate workers, fight slavery, influence multinational corporations, and expand the Fair Food Program. The phrase ensemble storytelling refers to a set of collective, dynamic storytelling practices. They are described as foundational to the operation of any WSR program.

Book Theorising Labour Law in a Changing World

Download or read book Theorising Labour Law in a Changing World written by Alysia Blackham and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together perspectives from industrial relations, political economy, political theory, labour history, sociology, gender studies and regulatory theory to build a more inclusive theory of labour law. That is, a theory of labour law that is more inclusive of non-traditional workers (including those in atypical work, or from non-traditional backgrounds); more inclusive of a variety of collective approaches to work regulation that foster solidarity between workers; and more inclusive of interdisciplinary and complex explanations of labour law and its regulatory spaces. The individual chapters speak to this theme of inclusivity in different ways and offer different suggestions for how it might be achieved. They break down the barriers between legal research and other fields, to promote fruitful and integrative conversations across disciplines. In the spirit of inclusivity and intergenerational dialogue, the book blends contributions from early career and emerging scholars with those from leading scholars in the field, featuring critical commentary from senior labour law figures alongside theoretically and empirically informed work.

Book Barons

  • Author : Austin Frerick
  • Publisher : Island Press
  • Release : 2024-03-26
  • ISBN : 1642832693
  • Pages : 274 pages

Download or read book Barons written by Austin Frerick and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2024-03-26 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barons is the story of seven titans of the food industry, their rise to power, and the consequences for workers, eaters, and democracy itself. Readers will meet a secretive German family that took over the global coffee industry in less than a decade, relying on wealth traced back to the Nazis to gobble up countless independent roasters. They will visit the Disneyland of agriculture, where school children ride trams through mechanized warehouses filled with tens of thousands of cows that never see the light of day. And they will learn that in the food business, crime really does pay--especially when you can bribe and then double-cross the president of Brazil. Barons paints a stark portrait of corporate consolidation, but it also shows that a fair, healthy, and prosperous food industry is possible--if we take back power from the barons who have robbed us of it.

Book I Am Not a Tractor

Download or read book I Am Not a Tractor written by Susan L. Marquis and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I Am Not a Tractor! celebrates the courage, vision, and creativity of the farmworkers and community leaders who have transformed one of the worst agricultural situations in the United States into one of the best. Susan L. Marquis highlights past abuses workers suffered in Florida’s tomato fields: toxic pesticide exposure, beatings, sexual assault, rampant wage theft, and even, astonishingly, modern-day slavery. Marquis unveils how, even without new legislation, regulation, or government participation, these farmworkers have dramatically improved their work conditions. Marquis credits this success to the immigrants from Mexico, Haiti, and Guatemala who formed the Coalition of Immokalee Workers, a neuroscience major who takes great pride in the watermelon crew he runs, a leading farmer/grower who was once homeless, and a retired New York State judge who volunteered to stuff envelopes and ended up building a groundbreaking institution. Through the Fair Food Program that they have developed, fought for, and implemented, these people have changed the lives of more than thirty thousand field workers. I Am Not a Tractor! offers a range of solutions to a problem that is rooted in our nation’s slave history and that is worsened by ongoing conflict over immigration.

Book Temporary Labour Migration in the Global Era

Download or read book Temporary Labour Migration in the Global Era written by Joanna Howe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the global era, controversies abound over temporary labour migration; however, it has not previously been subjected to a sustained socio-legal analysis on a comparative basis, critiquing the underpinning concepts conventionally accepted as fundamental in this area. This collection of essays aims to fill that void. Complex regulatory challenges arise from temporary labour migration. This collection examines these challenges and the extent to which temporary labour migration programmes can be ethical, equitable and efficacious and so deliver decent work for workers. Whilst the tendency for migration law to divide labour law's worker-protective mission has been observed before, the authors of the chapters comprising this collection seek not only to interrogate why and how this is so, but to go further in examining the implications and effects of a wide range of regulatory mechanisms on temporary labour migration.

Book A New American Labor Movement

Download or read book A New American Labor Movement written by William E. Scheuerman and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American labor movement isn't dead. It's just moving from the bargaining table to the streets. In A New American Labor Movement, William Scheuerman analyzes how the decline of unions and the emergence of these new direct-action movements are reshaping the American labor movement. Tens of thousands of exploited workers—from farm laborers and gig drivers to freelance artists and restaurant workers—have taken to the streets in a collective attempt to attain a living wage and decent working conditions, with or without the help of unions. This new worker militancy, expressed through mass demonstrations, strikes, sit-ins, political action, and similar activities, has already achieved much success and offers models for workers to exercise their power in the twenty-first century. Finally, Scheuerman notes, many of the strategies of the new direct-action groups share features with the sectoral bargaining model that dominates the European labor movement, suggesting that sectoral bargaining may become the foundation of a new American labor movement.
