Human challenge studies (HCS) involve the intentional infection of research participants, and this type of research is rapidly increasing in frequency worldwide. HCS are widely considered to be an especially promising approach to vaccine development, including for pathogens endemic to LMICs. However, challenge studies are sometimes controversial and raise complex ethical issues, some of which are especially salient in endemic and/or LMIC settings. Informed by qualitative interviews with experts in infectious diseases and bioethics, this book highlights areas of ethical consensus and controversy concerning this kind of research. As the first volume to focus on ethical issues associated with human challenge studies, it sets the agenda for further work in this important area of global health research; contributes to current debates in research ethics; and aims to inform regulatory policy and research practice. Its deceptively simple definition as the variation among living organisms masks its status as a hotly contested term both within the sciences and more broadly. In Eden’s Endemics, Elizabeth Callaway looks to cultural objects—novels, memoirs, databases, visualizations, and poetry— that depict many species at once to consider the question of how we narrate organisms in their multiplicity. Touching on topics ranging from seed banks to science fiction to bird-watching, Callaway argues that there is no set, generally accepted way to measure biodiversity. Westerners tend to conceptualize it according to one or more of an array of tropes rooted in colonial history such as the Lost Eden, Noah’s Ark, and Tree-of-Life imagery. These conceptualizations affect what kinds of biodiversities are prioritized for protection. While using biodiversity as a way to talk about the world aims to highlight what is most valued in nature, it can produce narratives that reinforce certain power differentials—with real-life consequences for conservation projects. Thus the choices made when portraying biodiversity impact what is visible, what is visceral, and what is unquestioned common sense about the patterns of life on Earth.

Book excerpt: Endemic fluorosis is caused by excessive intake of fluorine in drinking water, air, food, tea and other media in a specific natural environment for a long time, which involves at least 25 countries, such as China, India, Vietnam, Iran, Egypt, Mexico, Argentina and influences more than 200 million of population. China and India are the countries with the most extensive endemic fluorosis and the most serious damages. There are three main intake sources of endemic fluorosis, e.g., drinking water, coal-burning pollution and drinking tea. Coal-burning type of endemic fluorosis was established in Guizhou Province of China in 1970’s. The residents in the areas used indoor stoves with no flue to burn coals with high content of fluoride to bake grains in the autumn and heat in the winter. This results in excessive intake of fluorine and then leads chronic poisoning. It has been confirmed that 13 provinces of China with 34.3 million of population are influenced by this type of fluorosis with severe injuries to most organs of human body. The content of this book covers the epidemiology, pathological changes, molecular pathogenesis and clinical treatments of the disease. This book is a suitable reference for the researchers and graduate students in this field, which is helpful to improve the understanding of this disease and to take preventive measures.

A significant proportion of the Kashmir Himalayan endemics are endangered due to a multitude of factors and several of them are now listed in the Red Data Books at regional, national and international levels. For this study, ex situ conservation efforts were attempted by raising plants of some economically important, critically endangered endemic angiosperms species of the Kashmir Himalaya from rhizomes, seeds or other reproductive propagules in the experimental plot at Kashmir University Botanical Garden (KUBG). Nine species belonging to 9 genera and 7 families were dealt with. The paucity of critical information necessitated the present study to explicate the macro-level factors constraining the populations of the target species through extensive field survey trips, and also to undertake measures for ex situ propagation and conservation in order to support their recovery and restoration and provide long-term backup collections for sustained use by the local populace.

Even though many reports on palynological data on widely distributed and alien species of Indian Leguminosae are available, only scanty data is available regarding the endemic legumes of India. Book excerpt: Ending the neglect to attain the Sustainable Development Goals: a road map for neglected tropical diseases 2021–2030 (“the road map”) sets explicit targets for the elimination of onchocerciasis by 2030, including eliminating the need for mass drug administration (MDA) of ivermectin in at least one focus in 34 countries, in more than 50% of the population in at least 16 countries, and in the entire endemic population in at least 12 countries. The road map also targets interruption of onchocercal transmission in 12 countries by 2030. Achieving these targets and milestones will require a number of critical actions. These include establishing a well-coordinated global partnership to connect stakeholders and existing partnerships at all levels in order to improve coordination and collaboration, accelerate technical progress, implement a harmonized research agenda and enhance service delivery. To address these challenges and opportunities and advance critical actions, the World Health Organization (WHO), Member States and partners have established a Global Onchocerciasis Network for Elimination (GONE) to strengthen collaboration and communication and assist Member States with achieving the road map’s onchocerciasis elimination targets. GONE is a country-driven initiative focused on the road map and supported by WHO that will emphasize pragmatic and flexible solutions, to ensure that the needs of individual country programmes are met. The network will work to intensify integrated, cross-cutting approaches and advocate nationally and internationally, so that the drive to eliminate onchocerciasis goes all the way, down to the very last mile.
