Book Dynamic Localization Phenomena in Elasticity Acoustics and Electromagnetism

Download or read book Dynamic Localization Phenomena in Elasticity Acoustics and Electromagnetism written by Richard V. Craster and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-09-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Properties of wave localization play a decisive role both in applications of engineered microstructures and in the detection of cracks and flaws. The papers in this volume give an introduction into a variety of interrelated dynamic localization phenomena occurring in elasticity, acoustics and electromagnetism. In particular, these involve surface and edge waves and also trapped modes localized near defects, shape changes and the edges of elongated waveguides. The effects of layering, prestress, anisotropy, periodic microstructures as well as various multi-field phenomena are addressed with reference to underlying industrial problems. The essential and up-to-date numerical, asymptotic, and analytical techniques are covered as well as relevant continuum theories that are required to make progress in, and understand wave localization and allied effects. A major focus is on a qualitative physical insight into the mechanisms of dynamic localization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New applications for composite materials are being developed at a rapid pace. However, their complex microstructures present considerable challenges for nondestructive testing and characterization. Ultrasonic waves provide quantitative means of nondestructive evaluation of these materials and structures. For this purpose, it is necessary to obtain

Book Effects of Lateral Surface Conditions in Time harmonic Nonsymmetric Wave Propagation in a Cylinder

Download or read book Effects of Lateral Surface Conditions in Time harmonic Nonsymmetric Wave Propagation in a Cylinder written by American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Winter Annual Meeting and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is a part of the effort toward the development of an efficient method of solution to handle general nonsymmetric time-harmonic end conditions in a cylinder with a traction-free lateral surface. Previously, Kim and Steele (1989a) develop an approach for the general axisymmetric case, which utilizes the well-known uncoupled wave solutions for a mixed lateral wall condition. For the case of a traction-free lateral wall, the uncoupled wave solutions provide: (1) a convenient set of basis functions and (2) approximations for the relation between end stress and displacement which are asymptotically valid for high mode index numbers. The decay rate with the distance from the end is, however, highly dependent on the lateral wall conditions. The present objective was to demonstrate that the uncoupled solutions of the nonsymmetric waves discussed by Kim (1989), which satisfy certain mixed lateral wall conditions, can be utilized in an analogous manner for the asymptotic analysis of the traction-free case. Results for the end displacement/stress due to various end conditions, computed by the present method and by a more standard collocation method, were compared. The present method was found to reduce the computational effort by orders of magnitude.

Book Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids

Download or read book Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids written by J. D. Achenbach and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-01-21 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wave Propagation in Elastic Solids focuses on linearized theory and perfectly elastic media. This book discusses the one-dimensional motion of an elastic continuum; linearized theory of elasticity; elastodynamic theory; and elastic waves in an unbounded medium. The plane harmonic waves in elastic half-spaces; harmonic waves in waveguides; and forced motions of a half-space are also elaborated. This text likewise covers the transient waves in layers and rods; diffraction of waves by a slit; and thermal and viscoelastic effects, and effects of anisotropy and nonlinearity. Other topics include the summary of equations in rectangular coordinates, time-harmonic plane waves, approximate theories for rods, and transient in-plane motion of a layer. This publication is a good source for students and researchers conducting work on the wave propagation in elastic solids.

Download or read book Understanding Acoustics written by Steven L. Garrett and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-24 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a unified approach to acoustics and vibration suitable for use in advanced undergraduate and first-year graduate courses on vibration and fluids. The book includes thorough treatment of vibration of harmonic oscillators, coupled oscillators, isotropic elasticity, and waves in solids including the use of resonance techniques for determination of elastic moduli. Drawing on 35 years of experience teaching introductory graduate acoustics at the Naval Postgraduate School and Penn State, the author presents a hydrodynamic approach to the acoustics of sound in fluids that provides a uniform methodology for analysis of lumped-element systems and wave propagation that can incorporate attenuation mechanisms and complex media. This view provides a consistent and reliable approach that can be extended with confidence to more complex fluids and future applications. Understanding Acoustics opens with a mathematical introduction that includes graphing and statistical uncertainty, followed by five chapters on vibration and elastic waves that provide important results and highlight modern applications while introducing analytical techniques that are revisited in the study of waves in fluids covered in Part II. A unified approach to waves in fluids (i.e., liquids and gases) is based on a mastery of the hydrodynamic equations. Part III demonstrates extensions of this view to nonlinear acoustics. Engaging and practical, this book is a must-read for graduate students in acoustics and vibration as well as active researchers interested in a novel approach to the material.
