The rounded appearance given to them by the direction of the stitches serves to raise them from their backgrounds, and gives, instead of the decorative at design that is desired, one in relief. Stems should be simply worked up and down in Crewel Stitch in the manner shown in Fig. 172. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Art Needlework Five large editions of our former pamphlet on Rules and Designs for Using Knitting and Embroidery Silks have been eagerly sought after and studied by thousands of ladies, whose words of commendation encourage us to attempt to do still better in this our sixth effort. To this end, new and desirable rules have been added, and only the best of the old ones retained. In arranging this book we aim, first, to suggest to knitters and embroiderers a number of practical, useful, and ornamental articles that may be made with our celebrated Knitting and Embroidery Silks; next, to furnish such designs, rules and stitches, that any one, though not familiar with knitting or embroidery, may adapt them to the article in hand, as fancy or ingenuity may dictate. We shall esteem it a favor if any lady will write us and state the omissions or mistakes of any kind found in our rules or other printed matter. We shall also be pleased to get new rules, designs and new ideas of any kind, either in knitting, crocheting or embroidery. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Needlework as Art If my readers should be aware of repetitions, they must forgive them; remembering that the same idea has to be looked at sometimes from a different point of view, according to the use to which it is to be fitted. The same material may be employed for wall-hangings and dress, and then the principles which have been formulated have to be varied. I do not Shrink from repetitions if they make my meaning clear, remembering the Duke of Wellington's direction to his private secretary, Never mind repetitions and dot your i's. Book Needlework Without Specimens

Download or read book Needlework Without Specimens written by Ellen P. Claydon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Needlework Without "Specimens" The Modern Book of School Needlework AS many books dealing exhaustively with needlework are already in existence, some apology seems needed for the present work, or, at all events, some explanation of the attitude towards the subject here adopted. The preparation of the book has been undertaken partly in response to inquiries for a sewing-book on similar lines to Knitting without Specimens, and partly because the plan it suggests has been proved to have an inspiring effect on needlework teaching. Sewing is an occupation which has lately been the subject of much thoughtful inquiry by teachers and educationists generally, and their investigations have resulted in a desire to obtain from the subject more of living interest, of educational value, and of practical utility. The feeling has been steadily growing that a great deal of purposeless work, and far too much time, labour, and material have been expended on working the isolated, monotonous, and abstract exercises known as Specimens. This dreary plan of approaching the subject has not only failed to kindle that permanent interest in. Needlework which alone is the proof of successful teaching, but it has' often also produced an actual distaste for the subject. Further, the educational value of such a plan was almost negligible. The method of teaching was in complete contradiction to the fact that a child thinks in order to do. The girl had no desired goal to reach, no inspiring motive such as the construction of an article interesting to herself, and therefore the need for thought was reduced to a minimum. The Specimen plan was in contradiction, moreover, to the educational maxim that teaching should proceed from the concrete to the abstract, for it ignored the concrete (i e., the actual garment or article), which was within the sphere of the child's understanding and interest, and not only commenced, but frequently ended with a long series of abstract exercises.
