Book The Wonder That Is Urdu

Download or read book The Wonder That Is Urdu written by Krishna S. Dhir and published by Motilal Banarsidass. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language is a Developmental, social and cultural phenomenon. When Urdu started its literary journey, writing also treasured it and today we are proud of the great collection of Urdu books. Urdu lovers have also done a remarkable job in writing books on various topics and in conveying the standard writings to the Urdu circles by giving them solid ink. This book although written in English, is one such masterpiece by Krishna S. Dhir. However, it clearly reflects the love of the writer for the Urdu language and its literature. The beginning of this book is an excellent illustration of how the various apabhransha of South Asia interacted with Perso-Arabic and European languages, to give rise to various languages, including Urdu and how they grew up through the time of the Mughals and the British. How all the major religions of the world originated in the Asian continent and the observation of Sufis are highlighted in the second chapter of this book. The role of social and economic institutions and traditions in the evolution of Urdu has been shed light upon. Krishna S. Dhir has painstakingly elaborated upon the protest literature and extensively quoted Mir, Ghalib, Daagh Dehlvi, Sahir Ludhianvi, Faiz Ahmad, Ahmad Fraz and other poets to prove how Urdu poetry has been used to protest against siege, raids, imprisonment, imperialism and colonisation, and to express love and peace. Finally, the writer explores how Urdu is deployed by the diaspora that uses it.

Book Women Gender and Art in Asia c 1500 1900

Download or read book Women Gender and Art in Asia c 1500 1900 written by MeliaBelli Bose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 739 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, Gender and Art in Asia, c. 1500?1900 brings women's engagements with art into a pan-Asian dialogue with essays that examine women as artists, commissioners, collectors, and subjects from India, Southeast Asia, Tibet, China, Korea, and Japan, from the sixteenth to the early twentieth century. The artistic media includes painting, sculpture, architecture, textiles, and photography. The book is broadly concerned with four salient questions: How unusual was it for women to engage directly with art? What factors precluded more women from doing so? In what ways did women's artwork or commissions differ from those of men? And, what were the range of meanings for woman as subject matter? The chapters deal with historic individuals about whom there is considerable biographical information. Beyond locating these uncommon women within their socio-cultural milieux, contributors consider the multiple strands that twined to comprise their complex identities, and how these impacted their works of art. In many cases, the woman's status-as wife, mother, widow, ruler, or concubine (and multiple combinations thereof), as well as her religion and lineage-determined the media, style, and content of her art. Women, Gender and Art in Asia, c. 1500?1900 adds to our understanding of works of art, their meanings, and functions.

Book Lies Lies and More Lies

Download or read book Lies Lies and More Lies written by Vivek and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2014-10-15 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is no coincidence that Indias recent rise as a major global power has been closely linked to the increasing influence of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Indian politics. Driven by the philosophy of Hindu/Indian Nationalism, this entity, more of a movement than a political party, has served to instill in Indians a sense of confidence and restore lost self-esteem in a people who suffered foreign domination for over a thousand years. Detractors of this ideology have attempted to paint this philosophy as hate rant and supremacist indoctrination. Far from being that, it is the agonizing cry for justice and dignity of a people long suppressed and long tortured; a cry that embodies the agony of the past and a new-found confidence of the present and which together hopes to ensure a secure future: a future that envisions an inclusive all round economic and social development of a people. The BJPs spectacular victory crafted by Narendra Modi in the 2014 Indian elections serves to emphasize the central role of Hindu/Indian Nationalism in Indian politics, its broad appeal and its comprehensive agenda. Therefore it is imperative for the world at large to attempt a better understanding of this phenomenon; an objective assessment based on hard facts and sound logic instead of the skewed image propagated in the West by its ideological opponents. This book is a must for international statesmen, politicians, businessmen, academics, and others alike who wish to interact with India and Indians
