Book Encyclopaedia of Scientific Units Weights and Measures

Download or read book Encyclopaedia of Scientific Units Weights and Measures written by François Cardarelli and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 848 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mankind has a fascination with measurement. Down the centuries we have produced a plethora of incompatible and duplicatory systems for measuring everything from the width of an Egyptian pyramid to the concentration of radioactivity near a nuclear reactor and the value of the fine structure constant. With the introduction first of the metric system and of its successor the Système International d'Unités (SI), the scientific community has established a standard method of measurement based on only seven core units. The Encyclopaedia of Scientific Units, Weights and Measures converts the huge variety of units from all over the world in every period of recorded history into units of the SI. Featuring: - An A - Z of conversion tables for over 10,000 units of measurements. - Tables of the fundamental constants of nature with their units. - Listings of professional societies, and national standardization bodies for easy reference. - An extensive bibliography detailing further reading on the multifarious aspects of measurement and its units. This huge work is simply a "must have" for any reference library frequented by scientists of any discipline or by those with historical interests in units of measurement such as archaeologists.

Book Encyclopedia of Weights and Measure

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Weights and Measure written by D. M. Dowd and published by Begell House Publishers. This book was released on 2002 with total page 1500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopaedia endeavors to cover all aspects of weights and measures thoroughly andaccurately -what they are, what they do, where they come from, and how they relate to each other. If you are involved with measurement in the commercial, scientific, or technical fields, within or without the U.S.A., you will find information ere which is indispensable, interesting, or difficult to source. Should your interest be historical, sources and relationships across stretches of space and time are explored. The work is designed to help with at least two common problems: 1) Oftendifferent reference works give different values for some measures, and the reasons for this, including progress or mere error, are explained. 2) Obsolete or incorrect usages still abound in the literature and are the bane of students - these ar all investigated and the correct equivalents given. So, if you need to know the current proper measure used for the right purpose with the agreed value, or, one the other hand when and where a measure was used, how it varied over time and how it spread, then this one volume should satisfy your needs. Never before has the attempt been made to collate everything there is to know about the world's weights and measures between two covers. Each entry includes a glossary in many languages of the world.

Book Technology Sovereignty and International Law

Download or read book Technology Sovereignty and International Law written by Francis Lyall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-03-10 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dogma of the sovereignty of the state, deriving from the Peace of Westphalia, underpins much of the modern-day international system. However, developments in recent technology have led this ideology to depart from reality. Viewing state sovereignty through the prism of public international law, the book will begin with an overview of the settlement of Westphalia, how it has influenced international documents ever since, and how the advantages of centralised decisions came to be perceived. By surveying the Law of the Sea, Maritime Law, Air and Aviation, Telecommunications, Postal Services, Space Law and Mensuration, the book demonstrates how, in each, the interplay between state sovereignty and developing technologies have caused significant legal change. Some changes, Lyall argues, such as international measures of time and geography, have been born out of convenience, facilitated by technology developed for the purpose. Other areas of change developed out of a desire to reconcile conflicts or harmonise necessary state regulation. The book analyses the reasons behind these changes and discusses the ongoing attempts to balance state equality, measures adopted by new institutions to secure comprehensive representation. It ends by looking to the future of state sovereignty in an increasingly globalised world. The book is of use to any student or scholar interested in policy making, international law and international affairs, both legal and scientific, as well as those looking at legal administrative issues and government officiation.

Book Weights and Measures Standards of the United States

Download or read book Weights and Measures Standards of the United States written by Lewis V. Judson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-11 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Weights and Measures Standards of the United States: A Brief History The place of Louis A. Fischer in metrology has been so ably described in the Foreword to Miscellaneous Publication No. 64 that it is reproduced here verbatim. As a matter of historical record, it is appropriate here to comment briefly upon Mr. Fischer's career as a metrologist, which began with his entry, in 1880, into the service of the Office of Standard Weights and Measures of the Coast and Geodetic Survey. Starting in the workshop, where he was trained in the fabrication of precise Stand ards, he served in all branches of the work up to the making of the most accurate determinations of length and mass, and by 1898 he was in immediate charge of the weights and measures ofice. When the Bureau of Standards was established in 1901 that office was made a part of the new bureau, and in the new organization became the division of weights and measures of the Bureau of Standards. Mr. Fischer was at once made chief of this division, a position which he filled with conspicuous credit from that time continuously until his death in 1921, except while on duty with the United States Army during World War 1. Throughout the nearly 20 years of his service with the Bureau of Standards, Mr. Fischer was prominently identified with every move ment in the United States having to do with the science of metrology or the supervision of commercial weights and measures. He became one of the world's foremost experts in the comparison of funda mental precision Standards of length, his work at the International Bureau of Weights and Measures in the recomparison of certain meter bars being especially noteworthy and laying the foundation for a thorough intercomparison of all national prototypes with the international standard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the reasons for which weights and scales were used to measure goods in Early Mesopotamia (ca. 3,200-2,000 BCE). The vast corpus of cuneiform records from this period sheds light on the various mechanisms behind the development of this cultural innovation. Weighing became the means of articulating the value of both imported and locally-produced goods within a socioeconomic system that had reached an unprecedented level of complexity. This study provides a comprehensive analysis of this cultural and economic phenomenon, which simultaneously reflected and shaped the relationships between individuals and groups in Mesopotamia throughout the third millennium BCE.
