Despite the progress made and envisaged, there is scope for further improvement. The IMF staff mission identified the need for greater consistency in data recording across agencies and for regular inter-institution reconciliation exercises to resolve data discrepancies. One source of discrepancies is fixed capital formation of state and local governments, which—given the weight that these subnational units have in the aggregate—may well contribute to the significant divergence between measures of investment in the government finance statistics and in the national accounts. Accuracy and reliability of national accounts data are generally adequate and have improved since 2010.

The topics include female educational selection in migrants from Mexico to the United States, the impact of differences in the U.S.-Mexico labor market outcomes on the migratory flow, the working conditions of Mexican migrants to the United States under H2 visas, and the breadth and depth of migrants' connections from Latin American countries to the United States. The fourth and final section of the book studies a variety of aspects related to remittances from United States to Mexico and Latin American countries, including whether remittances promote growth in Mexico, whether remittances sent to Mexico finance migration of more Mexicans to the United States, and whether remittances have positive impacts in the households that receive them. The contributors to Migration and Remittances from Mexico are specialized migration researchers, trained in a broad variety of fields, including economics, sociology, demography, and political science in both Mexico and the United States. Based on studies of a range of countries in the Global South, this book examines heterogeneity within informal work by applying a common conceptual framework and empirical methodology. The country studies use panel data to study the dynamics of worker transitions between formal and heterogeneous informal work and present a comparative perspective across developing countries in Asia, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and North Africa and the Middle East. Each study provides a nuanced view of informality, dividing workers into six work statuses: formal wage-employees, upper-tier informal wage-employees, lower-tier informal wage employees, formal self-employed, and upper-tier informal self-employed. Based on this common conceptual framework, the country studies examine the distribution of workers across each of these work statuses, and document transition patterns across different formality and work statuses. The panel data analysed in each country study provide a basis for making statements about labour market transitions that are not warranted when using comparable cross-sections. The studies also examine the individual- and household-level characteristics associated with workers in each work status. Using these characteristics, each study constructs a 'job ladder' that ranks each work status, and then examines the characteristics of workers that are associated with transitions up (and down) the job ladder.

The central message of that report was that job creation is at the heart of development. Jobs raise living standards and lift people out of poverty, they contribute to gains in aggregate productivity, and they may even foster social cohesion. In doing so, jobs may have spillovers beyond the private returns they offer to those who hold them. Poverty reduction is arguably a public good, making everybody better off; higher productivity spreads across co-workers, clusters, and cities; and social cohesion improves the outcomes of collective decision-making. But which jobs make the greatest contribution to development and what policies can facilitate the creation of more of these jobs? There is no universal answer - it depends on the country's level of development, demography, natural endowments, and institutions. This volume explores the diversity of jobs challenges and solutions through case studies of seven developing countries. These countries, drawn from four continents, represent seven different contexts - a small island nation (St. Lucia), a resource-rich country (Papua New Guinea), agrarian (Mozambique), urbanizing (Bangladesh), and formalizing (Mexico) economies, as well as young (Tunisia) and aging (Ukraine) populations. Using methods drawn from several branches of economics and the social sciences more broadly and analyzing a wide range of data, the authors show the different ways in which jobs have contributed to social and economic development in the countries they have studied and how they can contribute in the future. The policy priorities vary accordingly. They often extend well beyond traditional labor market instruments to include policy areas not typically considered in national growth strategies.
