Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise

Download or read book The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise written by Dario Fernandez-Morera and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2023-07-11 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A finalist for World Magazine's Book of the Year! Scholars, journalists, and even politicians uphold Muslim-ruled medieval Spain—"al-Andalus"—as a multicultural paradise, a place where Muslims, Christians, and Jews lived in harmony. There is only one problem with this widely accepted account: it is a myth. In this groundbreaking book, Northwestern University scholar Darío Fernández-Morera tells the full story of Islamic Spain. The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise shines light on hidden history by drawing on an abundance of primary sources that scholars have ignored, as well as archaeological evidence only recently unearthed. This supposed beacon of peaceful coexistence began, of course, with the Islamic Caliphate's conquest of Spain. Far from a land of religious tolerance, Islamic Spain was marked by religious and therefore cultural repression in all areas of life and the marginalization of Christians and other groups—all this in the service of social control by autocratic rulers and a class of religious authorities. The Myth of the Andalusian Paradise provides a desperately needed reassessment of medieval Spain. As professors, politicians, and pundits continue to celebrate Islamic Spain for its "multiculturalism" and "diversity," Fernández-Morera sets the historical record straight—showing that a politically useful myth is a myth nonetheless.

Book Contadora And The Central American Peace Process

Download or read book Contadora And The Central American Peace Process written by Bruce Michael Bagley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The political, economic, and social problems of Central America during the past four years have at times threatened to escalate into a generalized conflict. Intense diplomatic efforts to find peaceful solutions to the crisis, however, have met with only limited success. Negotiations have collapsed amid bitter accusations of intransigence or bad faith, and some have taken place outside of public scrutiny, resulting in widespread confusion that has surrounded the entire peace process. This book is an effort by the Central American and Caribbean Program at the School of Advanced International Studies to shed light on the crucial roles of the Contadora Group (Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Venezuela) in forging peace in the region. Containing a collection of nearly one hundred statements, declarations, proposals, resolutions, draft treaties, and official documents, it easily constitutes the most comprehensive reference work on the search for peace in Central America. In order to improve readability, slight adjustments have been made to some of the documents.

Book La Revolucion Bolivariana Democratiza Los DD Hh Basicos

Download or read book La Revolucion Bolivariana Democratiza Los DD Hh Basicos written by Carlos Gonz Lez Irago and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-01-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book excerpt: Coping with anger and pain is more challenging than ever in these times—and more necessary. Two acclaimed Buddhist teachers offer strategies and wisdom in a book that’s been called “possibly the most inspiring and liberating meditation on love ever written.” When people and circumstances upset us, how do we deal with them? Often, we feel victimized. We become hurt, angry, and defensive. We end up seeing others as enemies, and when things don’t go our way, we become enemies to ourselves. But what if we could move past this pain, anger, and defensiveness? Inspired by Buddhist philosophy, this book introduces us to the four kinds of enemies we encounter in life: the outer enemy, people, institutions, and situations that mean to harm us; the inner enemy, anger, hatred, fear, and other destructive emotions; the secret enemy, self-obsession that isolates us from others; and the super-secret enemy, deep-seated self-loathing that prevents us from finding inner freedom and true happiness. In this practical guide, we learn not only how to identify our enemies, but more important, how to transform our relationship to them. Love Your Enemies teaches us how to . . . · break free from the mode of “us” versus “them” thinking · develop compassion, patience, and love · accept what is beyond our control · embrace lovingkindness, right speech, and other core concepts First published in 2013, Love Your Enemies is, more than ever, required reading for navigating our world. Throughout, authors Sharon Salzberg and Robert Thurman draw from ancient spiritual wisdom and modern psychology to help you find peace within yourself and with the world. * Includes new prefaces from both authors *

Book excerpt: The Enlhet, an Indigenous people of the Paraguayan Chaco, remained virtually untouched by colonialism until the 1920s. This changed with the arrival of Mennonites, who began settling in the centre of Enlhet territory in 1927; the Chaco War soon after (1932–35); the deadliest conflict in the western hemisphere after the American Civil War; and a terrible smallpox epidemic at the same time. In Don’t Cry the Enlhet give their own account of this period, focusing on their experiences of the war between Paraguay and Bolivia, in voices never before heard outside their own society. Their accounts, translated from the Enlhet language and set alongside sensitive historical-anthropological analysis, allow unprecedented access to these hitherto hidden perspectives. Enlhet witnesses to those times describe the processes of colonization to which they were subjected while, at the same time, insisting on their own vision of the world. This vision challenges the views of colonial society, symbolizing the search for a relationship that assumes a shared history, addresses the gulf between peoples, and embraces the potential of each. These oral histories bear witness to the role of Indigenous voices in overcoming the colonial mindset deeply rooted within Western societies, which lacks the conceptual framework to meet Indigenous societies on equal terms. A unique example of history from an Indigenous perspective, this book reflects a crucial moment for a people who preserved their language despite adverse circumstances and whose origins still inform their daily life. Don’t Cry demonstrates the importance of native voices for both Indigenous and colonial societies.
