Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After leading a Bible study one summer on the shores of Lake Erie about the events that occurred when Jesus was by water, Candy Porostosky decided to share her teachings, notes, and lessons so that others may also have the opportunity to purify, heal, and give life to their souls. Within a unique collection of encounters with Jesus by the water tailored for either Bible study groups or as a personal devotional, Porostosky intertwines scriptures with personal observations, based on years of Bible study and prayer. She invites spiritual seekers to spend time reflecting on God’s Word and in prayer in order to understand what the Holy Spirit is saying to each of us. Her encounters include the baptism of Jesus, the calling of the disciples, the woman at the well, the parables, and lessons in the storm and by the sea of Tiberius. Encounters with Jesus by the Water is a refreshing Bible study that shares scriptures and personal observations that encourage believers to grow in their faith, either individually or together with a group.

Book excerpt: Jesus ascended to heaven. End of story. But then how do we explain the many Christians, in nearly every century since, who claimed to have seen, heard, met, and touched Jesus in the flesh? In Seeing Jesus, Robert Hudson explores the larger-than-life characters throughout Christian history who have encountered the actual face or form of the resurrected Christ--from the apostles Thomas and Paul in the first century to Charles Finney in the nineteenth and Sundar Singh in the twentieth. Hudson combines history, biography, spiritual reflection, skepticism, and humor to unpack awe-inspiring and sometimes seemingly absurd stories, from a surprise sighting of Jesus in a cup of coffee, to Christ appearing to Julian of Norwich during a life-threatening illness to assure her that "all manner of thing shall be well." Along the way, he uncovers deeper meaning for us today. Through Hudson's quirky and lyrical prose we get to know people of unflinching faith, like Francis of Assisi, Teresa of Avila, Silouan the Athonite, and Sojourner Truth--those who claim radical encounters with Jesus. The result is a fascinating journey through Christian history that is at once thoroughly analytical and deeply devotional.

The stories are supplemented with moving accounts from her own life, and from the lives of women like you, to demonstrate that sometimes the best way to find healing, strength, and wholeness in Christ is, ironically, to lead with vulnerability and openness. Ultimately, Jesus Approaches teaches that finding the fullness of life for which you were created begins with bringing your brokenness to the Lord.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2017 Christianity Today Book Award winner ("Christian Living / Discipleship" category) Get ready for the wettest, stormiest, wildest trip through the Gospel you've ever taken The gospels are dramatic, wild, and wet--set in a rich maritime culture on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Jesus' first disciples were ragtag fishermen, and Jesus' messages and miracles teem with water, fish, fishermen, net-breaking catches, sea crossings, boat-sinking storms, and even a walk on water. Because this world is foreign and distant to us, we've missed much about the disciples' experiences and about following Jesus--until now. Leslie Leyland Fields--a well-known writer, respected biblical exegete, and longtime Alaskan fisherwoman--crosses the waters of time and culture to take us out on the Sea of Galilee, through a rugged season of commercial fishing with her family in Alaska, and through the waters of the New Testament. You'll be swept up in a fresh experience of the gospels, traveling with the fishermen disciples from Jesus' baptism to the final miraculous catch of fish--and also experiencing Leslie's own efforts to follow Christ out on her own Alaskan sea. In a time when so many are "unfollowing" Jesus and leaving the Church, Crossing the Waters delivers a fresh encounter with Jesus and explores what it means to "come, follow me."

Book excerpt: Introducing the first essay in the "Encounters with Jesus" e-book series from renowned pastor and New York Times bestselling author Timothy Keller, author of The Songs of Jesus. The Skeptical Student applies biblical wisdom to life’s biggest questions through the inspiring story of Nathanael’s life-changing encounter in the Gospel of John. The Gospels are full of encounters that made a profound impact on those who spoke with Jesus Christ. In the first essay of his new series, Timothy Keller, pastor of New York’s Redeemer Presbyterian Church and New York Times bestselling author of The Reason for God, shows how those encounters can still have a deep effect on us today. Through a lively examination of the biblical passage where Nathanael, the skeptical student, meets with Jesus, Keller reveals how this interaction is about life’s deep questions: Who are we? Why are we here? Why be a good person? Why love instead of hate? This first essay in the ten-part series of Encounters with Jesus also includes an exclusive look at Timothy Keller’s new book on faith and work: Every Good Endeavor: Connecting Your Work to God’s Work.

Book Encounter Jesus in Genesis 1

Download or read book Encounter Jesus in Genesis 1 written by Samuel J. Kim and published by Uijedang Press. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). God, who existed from eternity, created the entire universe and everything in it through His Word. And God proclaimed this fact in the very first verse of the Bible. To receive all the blessings in heaven, one must believe in the first verse of the Bible, which proclaims, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Hebrews 11:6). Believing that the Creator God is alive is the first step of faith. Abraham is a representative person of faith who appears in Genesis. However, Jesus said about Abraham: “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see My day, and he saw it and was glad” (John 8:56). Abraham, a man of faith who lived about 2,000 years before Jesus came to this earth, met Jesus. We also meet Jesus Christ in the Words of Genesis. Jesus is the Son of God, the only begotten of God the Father. Jesus, the Word of life which was from the beginning, is the true light that came among us in the flesh according to the will of God the Father. When the true light came to this earth and shone in the darkness, the darkness fled in an instant. Jesus, who came “by water and blood” (1 John 5:6), offered “one sacrifice for sins forever” (Hebrews 10:12) with His body and eliminated all the sins of this world. Through this collection of sermons, I hope readers will meet Jesus Christ, who has saved us entirely from all sins and made us children of light. And I pray that you will receive all the blessings in Heaven through Him.

Book excerpt: Applying a comprehensive theory of character to the Gospel of John, Cornelis Bennema provides a fresh analysis of the characters and their responses to Jesus. While the majority of scholars view most Johannine characters as “flat,” Bennema demonstrates that many are complex, developing, and “round.” John’s broad array of characters correspond to people and their choices in real life in any culture and time. This book highlights how John’s Gospel seeks to challenge its readers about where they stand in relation to Jesus.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether the issue of the day on Twitter, Facebook, or cable news is our sexuality, political divides, or the perceived conflict between faith and science, today’s media pushes each one of us into a frustrating clash between two opposing sides. Polarizing, us-against-them discussions divide us and distract us from thinking clearly and communicating lovingly with others. Scott Sauls, like many of us, is weary of the bickering and is seeking a way of truth and beauty through the conflicts. Jesus Outside the Lines presents Jesus as this way. Scott shows us how the words and actions of Jesus reveal a response that does not perpetuate the destructive fray. Jesus offers us a way forward—away from harshness, caricatures, and stereotypes. In Jesus Outside the Lines, you will experience a fresh perspective of Jesus, who will not (and should not) fit into the sides.
