Book excerpt: Something to think about - The Bible assures us that our God will never leave us, neither will He forsake us. It was the God of Israel who promised: "When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee." (Isaiah 43.2) This Almighty Creator God extended His love to the world through His Son Jesus Christ in whom, if any should believe, they would be saved and placed under the protective wings of His care. (John 3.16) The writer of the New Testament book to the Hebrews confirms this promise: "Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee." (Hebrews 13.5) Unbelievers (those who have not trusted in God's provision through Jesus Christ) have no promise of God's presence through any difficulty - they are on their own and left to their own devices. Believers suffer similar experiences while in the flesh because we are in the world - albeit, not of the world.

Despite this acknowledgment, there is a dearth of reference works in which the primary focus is how the Old Testament impacts Paul’s argument from Romans 1:1 to 16:27. This four-volume commentary aims to provide just such a reference. The interplay between Romans and its vast sea of Old Testament pre-texts produces unstated points of resonance that illuminate Paul’s rhetorical argument from the letter’s opening to its closing doxology. Volume 3 examines the scriptural pre-texts in Romans 9:1—11:36. This section of the letter is the most intertextually dense section of the New Testament and the most theologically controversial section in the entire Pauline corpus. If interpreters hope to navigate these exegetical and theological challenges, they must carefully analyze the intertextual subtext of these chapters where Paul engages Israel’s Scriptures at every rhetorical turn. This volume provides such an analysis. In this way, it also contributes to the commentary’s overarching aim, which is to provide scholars, interpreters, and students with verse by verse analysis of how Israel’s Scriptures impact almost every clause of Paul’s most famous letter.

Five messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, in the first part of a training that began on October 5, 1959, and concluded on January 22, 1960. Chapters 1, 2, 4, and 5 were previously published in a book entitled On Knowing the Bible. Chapter 3 was added based on notes taken by Brother K. H. Weigh and his wife, Lin Yi-tian. The messages that compose the first four chapters were given on October 6 through 9, 1959, and the fifth message was probably given shortly thereafter. The five messages are included in this volume under the same title as the previously published book. 4. Ten messages given in Taipei, Taiwan, in the second part of a training that began on October 5, 1959, and concluded on January 22, 1960. These messages were previously published in a book entitled Ten Lines in the Bible. Later, two appendices were added based on notes taken by Brother K. H. Weigh and his wife, Lin Yi-tian. The exact dates for the speaking of these messages are unknown, but they were given in the winter of 1959. The ten messages and the two appendices are included in this volume under the same title as the previously published book.

By means of a series of six closely-focused case studies, often deliberately introducing non-canonical or previously marginalized aspects of Chinese visual culture, it analyzes Chinese art's encounter with the broader world, and in particular with the West. Offering more than a simple charting of influences, it uncovers a pattern of richly mutual interchange between Chinese art and its others. Arguing that we cannot fully understand modern Chinese art without taking this expanded global context into account, it attempts to break down barriers between areas of art history which have hitherto largely been treated within separate and often nationally-conceived frames. Aware that issues of cultural difference need to be addressed by art historians as much as by artists, it represents a pioneering attempt to produce art historical writing which is truly global in approach.
