Book A Certain Justice

Download or read book A Certain Justice written by Haiyan Lee and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "China has an image as a realm of Oriental despotism where law is at best window-dressing and at worst an instrument of coercion and tyranny. The rule of law seems an elusive ideal in the face of entrenched obstacles baked, as it were, into China's cultural and political DNA. In this highly original contribution to the interdisciplinary field of law and humanities, Haiyan Lee contends that this image arises from an ahistorical understanding of China's political-legal tradition, particularly the failure to distinguish what she calls high justice and low justice. Lee argues that the liberal (and, so to speak, horizontal) conception of justice as fairness is quite different from the Chinese understanding of law. In the Chinese legal imagination, she shows, justice is a vertical concept, with low justice between individuals firmly subordinated to the high justice of the state. China's political-legal culture mistrusts law's ability to deliver justice and privileges moral over procedural justice. Lee shows that Chinese literature and film invariably dramatize the relationship between law and morality in ways that emphasize law's concession to moral sentiments and the triumph of moral justice through the discretion of a sagacious judge or the defiance of a vigilante hero. As China rises to global superpower status, its conception of justice can no longer be treated as a pale, floundering, and negligible sideshow to the legal drama of defending liberty and upholding human rights in the West. Lee's book helps us recognize the fight for justice outside the familiar arenas of liberal democracy and in terms other than those furnished by the rule of law"--

Book Animals in Person

Download or read book Animals in Person written by John Knight and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our relationship with animals is complex and contradictory; we hunt, kill and eat them, yet we also love, respect and protect them. This ambivalent relationship is further complicated by the fact that we attribute human emotions and intelligence to animals. We even go as far as likening them to children and treating them as family members. Drawing on a diverse range of case studies, Animals in Person attempts to unravel our close and fascinating link with the animal kingdom. This book highlights the theme of cross-species intimacy in contexts such as livestock care, pet keeping, and the use of animals in tourism. The studies draw on data from different parts of the world, including New Guinea, Nepal, India, Japan, Greece, Britain, The Netherlands and Australia. Animals in Person documents the existence of relations between humans and animals that, in many respects, recall relations among humans themselves.

Book Cyril Connolly

Download or read book Cyril Connolly written by Jeremy Lewis and published by Random House. This book was released on 2012-02-29 with total page 1076 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: `In one of tje funniest biographies I have ever read, Lewis assembles all the excellently entertaining anecdotes about this deeply loved, much mocked, sometimes reviled figure whose departure has robbed the litarary world of its social smartness and any worthwhile eccentricity . . . [An] excellent, wildly funny and informative biography. `Auberon Waugh, Literary Review. Precociously brilliant in his youth, Cyril Connolly was haunted for the rest of his life by a sense of failure and a romatic yearning to recover a lost Eden. His two great books, The Unquiet Grave and Enemies of Promise, are classics of English prose, combining wit, romanticism and merciless self-knowledge. As witty in person as he as in his prose, he was notoriously slothful and greedy; he was married three times, abd his dealings with women were bedevilled by a lifelong tendency to be in love with two or more people at once.

Book Raccoons

    Book Details:
  • Author : Samuel I. Zeveloff
  • Publisher : Smithsonian Institution
  • Release : 2013-07-09
  • ISBN : 1588343839
  • Pages : 209 pages

Download or read book Raccoons written by Samuel I. Zeveloff and published by Smithsonian Institution. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The word raccoon is drawn from the Native American Algonquian language. Their term arakun roughly translates to “he who scratches with his hands.” Anyone who has found a raccoon rummaging around in a once securely closed trash container can attest to how skillful raccoons are with their front paws. In fact, they have four times as many sensory receptors in their forepaw skin as they do in their hindpaws, a ratio similar to that of human hands and feet. Samuel Zeveloff explores this trait and much more in his accessible natural history of raccoons. Written with the general reader in mind, Raccoons presents detailed information on raccoon evolution, physical characteristics, social behavior, habitats, food habits, reproduction, and conservation, as well as their relationship with humans and many other topics. The section on distribution and subspecies focuses on the raccoon’s current range expansion, and the material on their cultural significance demonstrates this mammal’s unique status in different North American cultures.

Book At Home and Astray

Download or read book At Home and Astray written by Philip Howell and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2015-04-13 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the British consider themselves a nation of dog lovers, what we have come to know as the modern dog came into existence only after a profound, and relatively recent, transformation in that country’s social attitudes and practices. In At Home and Astray, Philip Howell focuses on Victorian Britain, and especially London, to show how the dog’s changing place in society was the subject of intense debate and depended on a fascinating combination of forces even to come about. Despite a relationship with humans going back thousands of years, the dog only became fully domesticated and installed at the heart of the middle-class home in the nineteenth century. Dog breeding and showing proliferated at that time, and dog ownership increased considerably. At the same time, the dog was increasingly policed out of public space, the "stray" becoming the unloved counterpart of the household "pet." Howell shows how this redefinition of the dog’s place illuminates our understanding of modernity and the city. He also explores the fascinating process whereby the dog’s changing role was proposed, challenged, and confronted—and in the end conditionally accepted. With a supporting cast that includes Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Thomas Carlyle, and Charles Darwin, and subjects of inquiry ranging from vivisection and the policing of rabies to pet cemeteries, dog shelters, and the practice of walking the dog, At Home and Astray is a contribution not only to the history of animals but also to our understanding of the Victorian era and its legacies.
