Book Enamels of the World 1700 2000

Download or read book Enamels of the World 1700 2000 written by Haydn Williams and published by Khalili Collections. This book was released on 2009 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Enamels of the World 1700-2000', consisting of some twelve hundred works, is the largest and most comprehensive private collection known. It provides an unparalleled opportunity to appreciate the richness and diversity of the art of enamelling during the past three centuries, ranging from the imposing work of Qing dynasty China and Meiji Japan, to the magnificent creations of Romanov Russia and the royal courts of Europe and the East. Formed with the innovative criterion of considering the subject in a globally, it covers work from all major centres of production, allowing the enamelwork of a specific country to be viewed within its own context and as part of a wider history. This volume presents over three hundred pieces from the collection. The survey starts with an account of the evolution and refinement of the different enamelling techniques. Thereafter it studies the subject thematically, considering the impact of patronage and travel, as well as the role of nationalism in the development of historical revivalism. The enamelwork of China, Japan, the Islamic Lands and Europe are examined both in terms of local development and the assimilation of foreign influence. The history of three firms is reviewed in greater focus - Jean George Rémond, Fabergé and Cartier. Representing different periods within three hundred years covered by the collection, the character of these firms, though largely shaped by the genius of their directors, was also formed by the era in which they flourished. Whether looking at the subject in general or in detail, the reader is presented with an illuminating display of the great technical skill and creative ingenuity of the enamellers of the world. The volume is accompanied by a CD that presents the Khalili Collection of 'Enamels of the World 1700-2000' in its entirety.

Book The Art of Peace

Download or read book The Art of Peace written by Sir David Khalili and published by Random House. This book was released on 2023-11-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1967, Sir David Khalili finished his military service in Iran and travelled to study in the United States with $750 - his remaining royalties from a book he wrote when he was just 14. Over the course of the next five decades he single-handedly, piece by piece, assembled eight of the finest art collections in their field, ultimately becoming one of the world's greatest collectors, about whom Queen Elizabeth II once said: 'It is scary how much this gentleman knows about art.' For the first time, Sir David shares his extraordinary journey: one that has taken him through the souks of North Africa, the auction houses of Europe and the United States, the bazaars of South Asia, and far beyond. Through a riveting collection of real-life adventures, he reveals his collecting strategy, business ethics and what motivates him to continuously collect, conserve, research, publish and exhibit the treasures in his collections. Through his story, Sir David questions how the undeniable power of art can be harnessed to foster greater peace and unity worldwide. No one is better placed to enlighten us.

Book Women Collecting and Cultures Beyond Europe

Download or read book Women Collecting and Cultures Beyond Europe written by Arlene Leis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-04 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines collecting around the world and how women have participated in and formed collections globally. The edited volume builds on recent research and offers a wider lens through which to examine and challenge women’s collecting histories. Spanning from the seventeenth century to the twenty-first (although not organized chronologically) the research herein extends beyond European geographies and across time periods; it brings to light new research on how artificiallia and naturallia were collected, transported, exchanged, and/or displayed beyond Europe. Women, Collecting and Cultures Beyond Europe considers collections as points of contact that forged transcultural connections and knowledge exchange. Some authors focus mainly on collectors and what was collected, while others consider taxonomies, travel, patterns of consumption, migration, markets, and the after life of things. In its broad and interdisciplinary approach, this book amplifies women’s voices, and aims to position their collecting practices toward new transcultural directions, including women’s relation to distinct cultures, customs, and beliefs as well as exposing the challenges women faced when carving a place for themselves within global networks. This study will be of interest to scholars working in collections and collecting, conservation, museum studies, art history, women’s studies, material and visual cultures, Indigenous studies, textile histories, global studies, history of science, social and cultural histories.

Book An Introduction to Medieval Enamels

Download or read book An Introduction to Medieval Enamels written by Marian Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Enamelling was used in the medieval period to embellish the most revered objects -- the altarpieces and reliquaries of cathedrals, the crowns and drinking cups of kings. The technique of enalling, fusing coloured glass to a metal surface by intense heat, enabled the metalworker to create an enduring polychrome image and to tell a story as forcefully as any painter. The V&A has an outstanding collection of pre-Renaissance enamels, ranging in date from Roman times to the fifteenth century and in country of origin from Ireland to Constantinople. Few of them have previously been reproduced and this colourful introduction, revealing a little of their beauty, explains the historical and artistic context of their manufacture." - back cover.
