Download or read book Joy written by Christian Wiman and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One hundred of the most evocative modern poems on joy, selected by an award-winning contemporary poet "Bursting with energy and surprising locutions. . . . Even the most familiar poets seem somehow new within the context of Joy."--David Skeel, Wall Street Journal"Wiman takes readers through the ostensible ordinariness of life and reveals the extraordinary."--Adrianna Smith, The Atlantic Christian Wiman, a poet known for his meditations on mortality, has long been fascinated by joy and by its relative absence in modern literature. Why is joy so resistant to language? How has it become so suspect in our times? Manipulated by advertisers, religious leaders, and politicians, joy can seem disquieting, even offensive. How does one speak of joy amid such ubiquitous injustice and suffering in the world? In this revelatory anthology, Wiman takes readers on a profound and surprising journey through some of the most underexplored terrain in contemporary life. Rather than define joy for readers, he wants them to experience it. Ranging from Emily Dickinson to Mahmoud Darwish and from Sylvia Plath to Wendell Berry, he brings together diverse and provocative works as a kind of counter to the old, modernist maxim "light writes white"--no agony, no art. His rich selections awaken us to the essential role joy plays in human life.

Download or read book Age of Joy written by Yaseva and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2021-02-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you at some time or the other, wondered whether it is ever possible for human civilization to move away from its present inconsistent and jarring ways? Whether the deep-down-desires of human beings will ever get met in a widespread way? If the anxiety, uncertainty and confusion that seem to be the norm of these times, get replaced with rampant and pervasive peace, happiness and joy? Many feel that the world is progressing, especially with the advancement in technology and communication. But in reality, if one looks closely, it is debatable whether humanity is moving up or sliding down. The global pandemic, violent territorial disputes between nations, religious chauvinism, intolerance, extreme poverty, violence against women and children, trafficking, discrimination and so on are certainly not manifestations of human civilization progressing, it’s more like degeneration. The Climate Emergency we are living in is pushing the planet towards extinction. The unscrupulous pharmaceutical industry is exploiting the health system for financial gains. The humongous war and armament industry drives the economy of developed nations and subversively fuels conflicts and jingoism among neighboring nations to keep their market flourishing. The insatiable greed of corporate tycoons for endless growth and wealth-garnering has no consideration for the livelihood of the vulnerable, causing chronic inequity. The mindless destruction and pollution of the planet’s primary resources, namely air, water and earth, to boost GDP, carries on merrily. All these are categorized as aspects of ‘un-workability’ and left to persist as situations that we are expected to live with. Pursuit of Joy is the panacea for all social anomalies and will usher human civilization into the Age of Joy.

Download or read book On the Ethical Philosophy of Edith Stein written by William E. Tullius and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although she never penned a text dedicated exclusively to ethics, Edith Stein’s work encompasses an implicit, but self-consciously developed, moral philosophy not yet sufficiently developed in the current English-language literature. However, comparison of Stein’s anthropological and metaphysical theories against the ethical philosophy of other early phenomenological thinkers, such as Max Scheler and Edmund Husserl, reveals lines of moral theory woven throughout her texts. In On the Ethical Philosophy of Edith Stein: Outlines of Morality, William E. Tullius endeavors to present a systematic account of Stein’s moral thought as it takes shape in conversation with neo-scholasticism and develops across her corpus in conversation with her philosophical anthropology, axiological theory, and metaphysics. The ethics which emerge from these sources is oriented around the moral project of the development of personality through the unfolding of one’s personal core and which entails a call to the development of an ethical community reflective of and oriented by its responsiveness to the highest values and to the communal destiny of all humanity in God

Download or read book The Role of Emotion in 1 Peter written by Katherine M. Hockey and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-24 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Katherine M. Hockey explores the function of emotions in the New Testament by examining the role of emotions in 1 Peter. Moving beyond outdated, modern rationalistic views of emotions as irrational, bodily feelings, she presents a theoretically and historically informed cognitive approach to emotions in the New Testament. Informed by Greco-Roman philosophical and rhetorical views of emotions along with modern emotion theory, she shows how the author of 1 Peter uses the logic of each emotion to value and position objects within the audience's worldview, including the self and the other. She also demonstrates how, cumulatively, the emotions of joy, distress, fear, hope, and shame are deployed to build an alternative view of reality. This new view of reality aims to shape the believers' understanding of the structure of their world, encourages a reassessment of their personal goals, and ultimately seeks to affect their identity and behaviour.
Download or read book Freedom dreaming futures for Black youth Exploring meanings of liberation in education and psychology research written by Seanna Leath and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-07-21 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research elucidating the developmental processes in Black children and youths' schooling and educative experiences is increasing (e.g., Carter-Andrews et al., 2019; Daneshzadeh & Sirrakos, 2018; Jackson & Howard, 2014; Neal-Jackson, 2018). Yet, the notion of “freedom dreaming” in relation to Black children and youth has received less attention within the fields of education and psychology. We draw from U.S. historian, Professor Robin D.G. Kelley's, concept of freedom dreaming to illuminate not only what we are fighting against in the education of Black youth (e.g., racial bias and discrimination, unfair disciplinary practices and criminalization, and Black youths' overrepresentation in special education and underrepresentation in gifted and talented programs), but also what we are fighting for - liberatory educational praxis that build on Black youths' individual and cultural strengths. In the current call, freedom dreaming refers to: (1) actively uplifting the complex lives and stories of Black children and youth in educational settings; (2) elevating Black children and youths' intersectional experiences related to ability, gender identity, sexuality, age, and socio-economic class; and (3) highlighting the innovative work of scholars who understand and value community power in efforts to advance educational change. We draw on Dr. Bettina Love's (2019) call for educational freedom, wherein she states, “The practice of abolitionist teaching is rooted in the internal desire we all have for freedom, joy, restorative justice (restoring humanity, not just rules), and to matter to ourselves, our community, our family, and our country with the profound understanding that we must “demand the impossible” by refusing injustice and the disposability of dark children.” (p. 7)

Download or read book The Book of Joy written by Dalai Lama and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-09-20 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An instant New York Times bestseller. Over 1 million copies sold! Two spiritual giants. Five days. One timeless question. Nobel Peace Prize Laureates His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu have survived more than fifty years of exile and the soul-crushing violence of oppression. Despite their hardships—or, as they would say, because of them—they are two of the most joyful people on the planet. In April 2015, Archbishop Tutu traveled to the Dalai Lama's home in Dharamsala, India, to celebrate His Holiness's eightieth birthday and to create what they hoped would be a gift for others. They looked back on their long lives to answer a single burning question: How do we find joy in the face of life's inevitable suffering? They traded intimate stories, teased each other continually, and shared their spiritual practices. By the end of a week filled with laughter and punctuated with tears, these two global heroes had stared into the abyss and despair of our time and revealed how to live a life brimming with joy. This book offers us a rare opportunity to experience their astonishing and unprecedented week together, from the first embrace to the final good-bye. We get to listen as they explore the Nature of True Joy and confront each of the Obstacles of Joy—from fear, stress, and anger to grief, illness, and death. They then offer us the Eight Pillars of Joy, which provide the foundation for lasting happiness. Throughout, they include stories, wisdom, and science. Finally, they share their daily Joy Practices that anchor their own emotional and spiritual lives. The Archbishop has never claimed sainthood, and the Dalai Lama considers himself a simple monk. In this unique collaboration, they offer us the reflection of real lives filled with pain and turmoil in the midst of which they have been able to discover a level of peace, of courage, and of joy to which we can all aspire in our own lives.

Download or read book Rules Paper Status written by Anna Tuckett and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2018-06-26 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether motivated by humanitarianism or concern over "porous" borders, dominant commentary on migration in Europe has consistently focused on clandestine border crossings. Much less, however, is known about the everyday workings of immigration law inside borders. Drawing on in-depth ethnographic fieldwork in Italy, one of Europe's biggest receiving countries, Rules, Paper, Status moves away from polarized depictions to reveal how migration processes actually play out on the ground. Anna Tuckett highlights the complex processes of inclusion and exclusion produced through encounters with immigration law. The statuses of "legal" or "illegal," which media and political accounts use as synonyms for "good" and "bad," "worthy" and "unworthy," are not created by practices of border-crossing, but rather through legal and bureaucratic processes within borders devised by governing states. Taking migrants' interactions with immigration regimes as its starting point, this book sheds light on the productive nature of legal and bureaucratic encounters and the unintended consequences they produce. Rules, Paper, Status argues that successfully navigating Italian immigration bureaucracy, which is situated in an immigration regime that is both exclusionary and flexible, requires and induces culturally specific modes of behavior. Exclusionary laws, however, can transform this social and cultural learning into the very thing that endangers migrants' right to live in the country.
