Book Empowering Transformations

Download or read book Empowering Transformations written by Maria Lassén-Seger and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-02 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norwegian author Alf Prøysen’s feisty little old Mrs Pepperpot appeared for the first time in print in 1955. Translated into well over twenty languages, the now classic Mrs Pepperpot stories have, so far, received surprisingly little critical attention. Empowering Transformations: Mrs Pepperpot Revisited fills that long over-due gap by providing a range of essays written by experts in the field. The volume explores Prøysen’s heroine in dialogue with recent theorising in order to broaden and deepen the understanding of her enduring popularity. The study introduces Prøysen’s works and career to an international readership, but also delves deeper into the Mrs Pepperpot phenomenon. Her character is analysed in view of metamorphosis, power, gender, and queer theory, and the stories’ ethical impact is assessed through the use of cognitive literary theory. Mrs Pepperpot’s many transformations into other media (illustration, sculpture, radio, TV, and Advent Calendar) are also considered, as well as her relations to nature, animals and technology, which are approached eco- and techno-critically. The volume appeals to an academic readership interested in literature, children’s literature, media studies, cultural studies and Scandinavian studies, as well as the general public celebrating Prøysen’s 100th anniversary in 2014.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The expansion of married women's property rights was a main achievement of the first wave of feminism in Latin America. As Carmen Diana Deeere and Magdalena Leon reveal, however, the disjuncture between rights and actual ownership remains vast. This is particularly true in rural areas, where the distribution of land between men and women is highly unequal. In their pioneering, twelve-country comparative study, the authors argue that property ownership is directly related to womenÆs bargaining power within the household and community, point out changes resulting from recent gender-progressive legislation, and identify additional areas for future reform, including inheritance rights of wives.

Book Global Empowerment of Women

Download or read book Global Empowerment of Women written by Carolyn M. Elliott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2007-12-12 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The empowerment of women is a broadly endorsed strategy for solving a host of difficult problems, from child poverty to gender violence to international development. The seventeen international scholars in this multi-disciplinary volume offer thoughtful critiques of the notion of empowerment based on their studies in twenty countries in all regions of the world. The comparative introduction places concepts of empowerment in the context of models of the market and of community, showing how contradictions in these models as they are enacted on the ground provide both spaces and constraints for women. The chapters consider opportunities for women in the context of globalization, resurgent nationalism and politicized religion, cultures of masculinity, and the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa. They show how initiatives at national or global levels are transformed by local cultures and power structures, and demonstrate the fruitfulness of tensions between universal values of human rights and contextualized understandings. This landmark, multi-disciplinary collection of original studies by distinguished international feminist scholars will be an essential addition to the fields of Political Science, Women’s Studies, Economics, Sociology, International Development, and Environmental Studies.

Book Women s Empowerment for a Sustainable Future

Download or read book Women s Empowerment for a Sustainable Future written by Claude-Hélène Mayer and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-08 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume focuses on women’s empowerment for a sustainable future. It takes cultural and transcultural and positive psychology perspectives into consideration and explores the topic of women’s empowerment from diverse stances, across social strata, cultural divides as well as economic and political divisions. It addresses the critique of the overly Western focus of positive psychology on this topic by adopting a transnational and transcultural lens, and by taking non-WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, Democratic) samples into in-depth consideration. The chapters therefore focus on women from diverse socio-cultural, political, socio-economic backgrounds and discuss their ways of empowering others and being empowered. They also discuss related positive psychology constructs, such as: coping, resilience, transformation, growth, leadership, creativity, identity development, sustainable action, as well as positive socio-economic, political and eco-sustainable thought and action. The volume as a whole looks at women's leadership as a factor of empowerment. A further fundamental assumption is that women’s empowerment is needed to create a sustainable future at micro-, meso- and macro levels, which presumes safety, peace, ecological considerations, and compassionate leadership.

Book Poultry production in Burkina Faso Potential for poverty reduction and women s empowerment

Download or read book Poultry production in Burkina Faso Potential for poverty reduction and women s empowerment written by Hoffmann, Vivian and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Poultry rearing is widespread in rural Burkina Faso, and contributes to both the food security and cash income of smallholders farmers. The landlocked status of the country, coupled with increasing demand for poultry in urban areas implies an opportunity for significant, pro-poor growth through this sector. We use data from a survey of 1800 poultry producers to characterize smallholder poultry producers and their practices. We find that 88% of households in program areas raised poultry. While access to vaccination services and veterinary medicines at the village level is high, uptake of these services is limited, especially among smaller producers. Fewer women than men own poultry, but most women report that they control the proceeds from sales of their own birds, indicating the potential for development of the poultry sector to generate relatively equitable gains in terms of gender. Access to credit appears to increase women’s poultry ownership, but remains limited, as does women’s access to poultry output markets.

Gracias Logis Kreatif. This book was released on with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book begins with an explanation of the concept of inclusive innovation, defined as the development and implementation of new ideas, products, services, and processes that aim to meet the needs and improve the well-being of marginalized or underserved populations. Inclusive innovation seeks to ensure that the benefits of innovation are shared across society, including those who are often excluded from mainstream economic and technological progress, including students with disabilities. This concept is critical to creating a more just and equitable society. By focusing on the needs of underserved populations and ensuring that the benefits of innovation are shared widely, inclusive innovation can drive sustainable development and improve the quality of life for all. Addressing challenges and promoting strategies that support inclusivity in the innovation process will be key to achieving these goals. The book highlights the role of students with disabilities in developing innovative solutions, emphasizing their contribution to fostering inclusivity in society. The book provides examples of innovations that were originally designed for people with disabilities but were later universally adopted, highlighting the importance of products that are universally designed to accommodate all abilities.

Book Women s empowerment in Rwandan agriculture A baseline assessment in the context of Rwanda s gender and youth mainstreaming strategy and the fourth strategic plan for agricultural transformation

Download or read book Women s empowerment in Rwandan agriculture A baseline assessment in the context of Rwanda s gender and youth mainstreaming strategy and the fourth strategic plan for agricultural transformation written by Rosenbach, Gracie and published by Intl Food Policy Res Inst. This book was released on 2023-07-07 with total page 21 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rwanda is a recognized leader in the region and in the world in terms of women’s empowerment. However, no country has yet achieved full gender equality, resulting in untapped potential. The findings from the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI) baseline survey conducted in 2019 for the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI), indicated that women and men in Rwanda both have relatively high levels of empowerment across different agricultural do mains, and most women are as empowered as men in their households. This working paper dis cusses the findings further and in the context of MINAGRI’s Gender and Youth Mainstreaming Strategy that was also launched in 2019, as well as the Fourth Strategic Plan for Agricultural Transformation (PSTA 4). Key findings include the following. • Compared to other countries in the region, women in Rwanda have relatively greater access to financial services and a relatively lower time burden in agriculture. • However, when compared to men in Rwanda, inequalities persist. Women are significantly less likely than men to access financial services, participate in the marketing of agricultural commodities, access extension services, and spend their time on productive (rather than reproductive) work. By adapting and promoting innovative and gender-inclusive financial products, shifting gendered cultural norms, providing extension to both the household head and the spouse, and investing in time-saving technologies and innovations, there are opportunities to reduce the gender gap in agriculture and increase agricultural productivity. Realization of these outcomes will depend partly on the implementation of the Gender and Youth Mainstreaming Strategy and PSTA 4, and partly on coordination with other gender-transformative programs in Rwanda.
