Book Empowering Black Women to Lead A Phenomenological Study Examining the Role of the NCBAA Institute in the Development of Midlevel Community College Administrators

Download or read book Empowering Black Women to Lead A Phenomenological Study Examining the Role of the NCBAA Institute in the Development of Midlevel Community College Administrators written by Kimberly A. Beatty and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study was conceptualized out of my experience transitioning into a midlevel leadership position in a community college. In the beginning, I thought my reality was specific to me. However, the more I engaged in leadership development, the more I learned that my journey was not unique. This study explored the experiences of three Black midlevel women administrators who participated in a week-long leadership development institute sponsored by the National Council on Black American Affairs (NCBAA). Literature exploring leadership development for Blacks and Black women were examined. Literature focused on a Black woman's experience in the academy was also presented. Using transcendental phenomenology as both the theoretical framework and methodological approach, data were collected through journals and face-to-face interviews. The data revealed that culturally-specific leadership development shapes a Black women's continued leadership in community colleges. The participants' perceptions of the experiences at the NCBAA Leadership Development Institute for Midlevel Leaders created a confidence that transcended their subsequent existence in their midlevel leadership roles. The conclusions were grounded in theoretical implications, Black feminism (Collins, 2000), self-motivation (Maslow, 1954), salience hierarchy (McCall & Simmons, 2009), and daesin (Heidegger, 1927), that shaped a new theoretical paradigm, the pendulum theory. Black women have historically transitioned on the pendulumgiven the historical and social climate of the nation. The saliency of situations associated with midlevel leadership influences the swing of the pendulum; however, time (socio-political time or personal growth in time), determines where the pendulum lands. Each woman in this study created their individual path built upon common experiences at the Institute. -- Abstract.

Download or read book A Phenomenological Study Examining the Experience of First generation African American Female Students Attending a Community College written by Wendy Mason-Mathews and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the lived experience of first-generation African-American female students at Macomb Community College (MCC) in Warren, Michigan. The purpose of this research study was to explore the lived experiences of resilient and successful first-generation African-American female community college students. This qualitative study used a phenomenological approach, specifically a social constructionism perspective, and semi-structured interviews. Using an Appreciative Inquiry (AI) interview technique, the researcher selected students who met the inclusion criteria, which consisted of attending MCC community college for two or more semesters. Six themes emerged: (a) Family Support, (b) College Highlights, (c) Self-Reliance/Independence, (d) Self-Identification, (e) Adversity, (f) Overcoming Life Challenges. The insights and result of this study can be used by high school and postsecondary administrators, counselors, faculty members, and career coaches to re-examine current best practices, to redefine academic success, and to launch programs specifically designed for first-generation students based upon their specific needs and perspective.

Book Resilience Personified

Book excerpt: Despite the recent increase in messaging on the importance of improving diversity and inclusion efforts within higher education, Black women working in administrative roles continue to be the most misjudged, undervalued, and underrepresented group of individuals on college campuses across the country. The purpose of this interpretative phenomenological research study was to explore the lived experiences of Black women senior-level administrators to understand the strategies they have used to successfully navigate their internalized imposter feelings while persisting within oppressive cultures in student affairs divisions at PWIs. With the conceptual framework being guided by the principle tenets of Intersectionality and Black Feminist Thought, this research sought to explore the following questions: 1. How has the cultural factors within student affairs divisions at predominantly White institutions impacted the career trajectory of Black women senior-level administrators? 2. How do Black women working as a senior-level administrator within student affairs divisions at a predominantly White institution describe their experiences? 3. What strategies have Black women senior-level administrators within student affairs divisions at predominantly White institutions leveraged to advance in their careers, despite experiencing feelings of being imposters? Data was collected from eight transcribed interviews, information from resumes and curriculum vitae collected from the participants, and notes from the researcher's journal. Five main themes emerged from the data analysis process and are as follows: 1) student affairs culture, 2) the plight of the Black women experience, 3) Am I enough? 4) persist despite the diss, and 5) get yours sis. The findings of this research study may be used to provide Black women who are entering the field or those who have been in the field for quite some time with practical strategies to employ to advance in their careers and combat some of the stressors of student affairs culture.

Book AN EXAMINATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP PRACTICES AND UPWARD MOBILITY WITHIN THE NORTH CAROLINA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM

Download or read book AN EXAMINATION OF AFRICAN AMERICAN LEADERSHIP PRACTICES AND UPWARD MOBILITY WITHIN THE NORTH CAROLINA COMMUNITY COLLEGE SYSTEM written by Levy Brown and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this mix-methods study is to examine the association between leadership practices of African American administrators within the North Carolina Community College System and their upward mobility as indicated through a myriad of categories such as a high number of promotions and high organizational level. Secondly, the purpose of this study is to determine if self-identified leadership practices of African American administrators and the observed leadership practices as measured by the Leadership Practices Inventory developed by Kouzes and Posner are similar. The NCCCS is currently the third largest community college system in the country. This type of study may help to illuminate opportunities for growth in the area of leadership and administrative diversity within the system that may translate to other systems in other states. This study closely examined the leadership practices of ten African American senior level administrators. The administrators completed the LPI-Self survey while someone they supervise directly completed the LPI-Observer to provide feedback on the administrator's leadership style. Further, each participant answered eight open-ended questions related to upward mobility, career pathways, and career barriers. The findings revealed that these leaders exhibit various leadership practices in the workplace. However, Enable Others to Act is the practice exhibited most frequently by the participants. The research study included various future implications and recommendations that contribute to study on African American senior level administrators in the community college setting.

Book Exploring the Lived Experiences of African American Female College Presidents

Download or read book Exploring the Lived Experiences of African American Female College Presidents written by Breonna Collins and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the American College President Survey of 2017, 30% of college presidents across the country are female, and only 5% of that population is represented by women of color (Gagliardi et al., 2017). Diversity in leadership positions, more specifically in the higher education sector, is a critical need as higher education institutions continue to develop sustainability strategies in response to impending demographic changes (Virick & Greer, 2012). The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research study was to describe the lived experiences, pathways, and successful strategies used during career trajectory by former or current African American female college presidents in the United States. Framed by intersectionality and Black feminist thought, a phenomenological qualitative research study utilized data from six African American women who were serving, or had served, as college presidents in the United States. The findings revealed that while African American female college president had an overall positive experience during their pathway to presidency, remnants of racial discrimination, gender discrimination, and the Queen Bee Syndrome had an impact on their career trajectory. Despite these roadblocks, it was determined that internal confidence, mentorships and professional development opportunities, specialized skill sets, and a community of support led to them to achieving college presidency. The findings of this study can be utilized by aspiring African American female college presidents, current university governing bodies or boards, and university human resource professionals within the United States higher education system to identify and implement strategies that better support aspirant college presidents. Keywords: African American female college presidents, higher education, mentorship, intersectionality, Black Feminist Thought

Book Women and Leadership in Higher Education

Download or read book Women and Leadership in Higher Education written by Karen A. Longman and published by IAP. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women and Leadership in Higher Education is the first volume in a new series of books (Women and Leadership: Research, Theory, and Practice) that will be published in upcoming years to inform leadership scholars and practitioners. This book links theory, research, and practice of women’s leadership in various higher education contexts and offers suggestions for future leadership development strategies. This volume focuses on the field of higher education, particularly within the context of the United States—a sector that serves a majority of students at all degree levels who are women, yet lacks parity by women in senior leadership roles. The book’s fifteen chapters present both hard facts regarding the current demographic realities within higher education and fresh thinking about how progress can and must be made in order for U.S. higher education to benefit from the perspectives of women at the senior leadership table. The book’s opening section provides data and analysis in addressing “The State of Women and Leadership in Higher Education”; the second section offers descriptions of three effective models for women’s leadership development at the national and institutional levels; the third section draws from recent research to present “Women’s Experiences and Contributions in Higher Education Leadership.” The book concludes with five shorter chapters written by current and former college and university presidents who offer “Lessons from the Trenches” for the benefit of those who follow. In short, the thesis of the book is that our world is changing; higher education collectively, as well as institutions of all types, must change. Bringing more women into leadership is critical to the goal of moving our society and world forward in healthier ways.

Book Women in Public Relations

Download or read book Women in Public Relations written by Larissa A. Grunig and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past 20 years have seen an influx of women into the practice of public relations, yet gender-based disparities in pay and advancement remain a troubling reality. As the field becomes feminized, moreover, female and male practitioners alike confront the prospect of dwindling salaries and prestige. This landmark book presents a comprehensive examination of the status of women in public relations and proposes concrete ways to achieve greater parity in education and practice. The authors integrate the theoretical literature of public relations and gender with results of a major longitudinal study of women in the field, along with illuminating focus group and interview data. Topics covered include factors contributing to sex discrimination; how public relations stacks up against other professions on gender-related issues; the challenges facing female managers and entrepreneurs; the experiences of ethnic minority professionals; the salary gap; the glass ceiling; and how to foster solutions on individual, organizational, and societal levels. This volume is an essential read for both educators and practitioners in public relations. It can be used as a course text in graduate research seminars, and also as a supplemental text in courses addressing gender issues in PR. It serves as a useful guide for young practitioners entering the profession, and provides critical insights for public relations managers.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2010 edition of this monograph addresses many topics (e.g., administration of orientation programs, family involvement, student characteristics and needs, assessment, and orientation for specific student populations and institutional types) that were included in previous editions but approaches them with new information, updated data, and current theory. However, this edition also takes up new topics in response to the "opportunities and concerns" facing orientation, transition, and retention professionals such as collaborations among campus units in the development and delivery of orientation, the increase in nontraditional student populations, the need for effective crisis planning and management in orientation programs, new technologies, and even the challenge of making the case for orientation in an era of diminishing resources. The authors have carefully penned chapters incorporating contemporary information, ideas, and concepts while being reflective of traditional practices. Following a preface by Margaret J. Barr and a foreword by Jennifer R. Keup and Craig E. Mack, chapters in this edition include: (1) Brief Overview of the Orientation, Transition, and Retention Field (Craig E. Mack); (2) Theoretical Perspectives on Orientation (Denise L. Rode and Tony W. Cawthon); (3) Making the Case for Orientation: Is It Worth It? (Bonita C. Book Women in Sport Leadership

Download or read book Women in Sport Leadership written by Laura J. Burton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although women and girls participate in sport in greater numbers than ever before, research shows there has been no significant increase in women leading sport organizations. This book takes an international, evidence-based perspective in examining women in sport leadership and offers future directions for improving gender equity. With contributions from leading international sport scholars and practitioners, it explores the opportunities and challenges women face while exercising leadership in sport organizations and evaluates leadership development practices. While positional leadership is crucial, this book argues that some women may choose to exercise leadership in non-positional ways, challenging readers to consider their personal values and passions. The chapters not only discuss key topics such as gender bias, intersectionality, quotas, networking, mentoring and sponsoring, but also present a variety of strategies to develop and support the next generation of women leaders in sport. A new model of how to achieve gender equity in sport leadership is also introduced. Women in Sport Leadership: Research and Practice for Change is important reading for all students, scholars, leaders, administrators, and coaches with an interest in sport business, policy and management, as well as women’s sport and gender studies.
