Book Cultural Differences in Job Motivation

Download or read book Cultural Differences in Job Motivation written by Corinna Colette Vellnagel and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: Distinction, The University of Surrey (Faculty of Arts and Human Sciences), course: Intercultural Communication with International Business, language: English, abstract: What makes people get up in the morning - is it the simple habit, the routine or the sense of purpose? Why do people make promises to do and decide certain things? "Some people get more done than others" (Riley:1996, p.44); while some drift along, others are goal-setters; and some just cannot get started, whereas others are unstoppable. Why is it so? Why do employees ask themselves if it is worth the reward to make "an effort to achieve a goal" (Van der Wagen, Davies:1998, p.24)? The answer can be found in the realm of motivation. Motivation, something that according to various book titles1 needs to be understood, belongs to leadership studies and organisational behaviour. Consequently, "looking at what motivates people, and to lead them, is essential for every manager" (ibid.), because different things might motivate different staff members. One would not expect people to be as complex as they are, but "culture, although not the only variable of importance contributes significantly to explain key differences in social behaviour" (Treven, Mulej, Lynn:2008, p.33). Factors motivating followers in organisations often differ from culture to culture and do not only diverge from different organisational cultures (ibid.: p.34). There is no proof that motives like need for achievement, intrinsic needs for competence and self-efficacy can be generalised across cultures as the specific factors which drive such motives vary across cultures (Gelfand, Erez, Aycan:2007, p.482). This leads to the area of cross-cultural organisational behaviour, which, as well as culture-specific work motivation, only have a relatively short research history, but they actually date back to the times of Dionysios I. from Syrakus2

Book Employee Satisfaction on Cruise Ships

Download or read book Employee Satisfaction on Cruise Ships written by Ina Kronberg and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2009-10-12 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Leadership and Human Resources - Miscellaneous, grade: 70 (distinction), 1.0, The University of Surrey (School of Management), language: English, abstract: The concept of job satisfaction is one of the most extensively researched area in organisational management as a consequence of its association with individual and organisational outcomes. In order to explain the concept, the study explores traditional, e.g. Maslow’s „hierarchy of needs”, and new theories of job satisfaction. Although many studies were conducted in various industries there seems to be a lack of research amongst seafarers on cruise ships. The cruise industry has been one of the fastest growing sectors within the tourism industry over the last decade and it is estimated that the industry continues to grow by 10% annually (Testa et al., 1998a). Cruise ships offer a unique work environment so that this research aims to assess job satisfaction of seafarers in relation to employee expectations and experiences, supervisor and co-worker relationships, as well as working and living conditions. For this cross-sectional study the researcher used a quantitative research design and undertook the investigation in a non-contrived setting. The lack of an appropriate instrument to measure the above mentioned variables in such a unique and complex workplace led the researcher to develop a new scale suitable for the cruise industry. The instrument was developed by reviewing popular scales, such as, the Minnesota Job Satisfaction Questionnaire. The sample of seafarers was taken from two ships of an American cruise line operating in the luxury cruise market. The investigation revealed that the developed instrument is a valid and reliable measure to assess job satisfaction in the cruise industry. Significant results were found throughout the study and it appeared that seafarers are generally satisfied with their job. However, on Ship B there was indication that some crew members perceived racial discrimination on board so that their satisfaction levels were below average. Thus, the results obtained are valuable for the cruise line insofar as the identified factors which cause dissatisfaction could be improved or eliminated. From a theoretical point of view the study confirmed Maslow’s conclusion that individuals proceed along the hierarchy of needs.

Book Cruise Business Development

Download or read book Cruise Business Development written by Alexis Papathanassis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-20 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses innovation management and product development in the cruise tourism industry. It explains how experience management has evolved from a strictly company-level, product- or service-focused tactical task to an industry-wide strategic challenge, and analyses the role of intangible reputational aspects of cruise experiences, as well as peripheral components and stakeholders, as increasingly important factors for customer acquisition and retention. Safety and risk issues are a central theme, as well as the cruise sector’s environmental and socio-economic impacts. Lastly, the book considers the increasing size of cruise vessels and the accompanying standardisation of facilities and itineraries, in conjunction with the hybridisation of cruise passengers in connection with expanding the competitive boundaries and intensity of competition in the cruise sector. The book approaches these issues as more than a mere public relations campaign, recognising the fact that they have since become the very essence of strategic cruise business development.

Book Work life balance among cruise ship crews

Download or read book Work life balance among cruise ship crews written by C. Schädel and published by Bachelor + Master Publication. This book was released on 2011-01-18 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Every cruise passenger experiences the ever smiling, friendly faces, which care for all and everything. Working where others experience adventures, relax, restore their energies, and enjoy world-class services, has to be fun. It seems that working on a cruise ship is a very enviable job. But is it really? This paper examines the impact on personal costs, in terms of physical and emotional exhaustion, of performing outstanding service and work on cruise vessels for several months a year. Work-life balance meets many criteria of a popular common phrase: It seems that everybody has at least a rough idea what is meant by the term; its use is connected to positive association rather than negatives and so it is quite easy to attach many factors old as well as new ones- to its meaning. Therefore it is no wonder to meet in many Companies well known- job arrangements, which are titled now Work-life balance arrangements. The most common statements are: more flexible and family friendly working hours, followed by sport and leisure time offerings, nutrition counseling, further job training and a higher service for families to assist finding a child day-care. Nevertheless the general traditional academic discussion about the relationship between work and the rest of the life stands above the balance of job and family. So the scope has changed from (expectant) mothers and, especially younger, kids in former times, towards a higher concentration of diverse fields of life and job. Since there is no unified definition of the term, and within the academically and popular-science literature a multitude of different explanations and description exist, it is needed to define it by its single facets, Work, Life and Balance. Afterwards combine those to get a clear idea of the whole term. Work: activity involving mental or physical effort done in order to achieve a result; such activity as means of earning income; treated as a place where industrial or manufacturing processes are carried out . Life: the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death; a particular type or aspect of people s existence; vitality, vigour or energy . Balance: an even distribution of weight ensuring stability; mental or emotional stability; a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct [...]

Book Cruising in the Global Economy

Download or read book Cruising in the Global Economy written by Christine B.N. Chin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This unique mode of business focusing on the production and consumption of pleasure at sea and on land offers us an unprecedented opportunity to analyze the manner in which ongoing economic restructuring processes to bring about free markets in goods, services and labour can and does involve both life on land and at sea. This interdisciplinary analysis elicits an examination of states' relationship to the maritime regulatory structure governing ship ownership, management and operations, cruise lines' business strategies, development of port communities to capture cruise-related revenue, changing leisure consumption patterns and meanings, and the employment of foreign migrant workers as seafarers.

One out of 12 people in the world are employed by the tourism industry which contributes $6.5 trillion to the world's economy. To investigate the size and effect of this new industry, Elizabeth Becker traveled the globe. She speaks to the Minister of Tourism of Zambia who thinks licensing foreigners to kill wild animals is a good way to make money and then to a Zambian travel guide who takes her to see the rare endangered sable antelope. She travels to Venice where community groups are fighting to stop the tourism industry from pushing them out of their homes, to France where officials have made tourism their number one industry to save their cultural heritage; and on cruises speaking to waiters who earn $60 a month--then on to Miami to interview their CEO. Becker's sharp depiction reveals travel as a product; nations as stewards. Seeing the tourism industry from the inside out, the world offers a dizzying range of travel options but very few quiet getaways"--
