Download or read book Empirical Analysis of the Capital Structure Determinants written by Abubakr Saeed and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-08 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capital structure theory is one of the most bewildering issues in the corporate finance literature. Capital structure theories suggest various factors that affect firm to maintain a target capital structure in order to maximize firm value, by minimizing the costs of prevailing market imperfections. Subsequent to the departures from Modigliani and Miller (1958) s irrelevance proposition, there is a long tradition in corporate finance to investigate the capital structure determinants of firms. Most capital structure studies based on these theories to date uses data from economies that have developed financial markets or approaching higher stages of transition, i.e. China and India. Less developed market and particular specific industry is rare in literacy sphere. This book analyzes the explanatory power of some predominant theories that have been proposed in the literature to explain determinants of capital structures across firms. In particular, this study investigates the capital structure determinants of Pakistani firms based on a panel data set from 2001 to 2005.

Exploring the various models and techniques used to understand the capital structure of an organization, as well as the products and means available for financing these structures, the book covers how to develop a goal programming model to enable organization leaders to make better capital structure decisions. Incorporating international case studies to explain various financial models and to illustrate ways that capital structure choices determine their success, Capital Structure Decisions looks at existing models and the development of a new goal-programming model for capital structures that is capable of handling multiple objectives, with an emphasis throughout on mitigating risk. Helps financial leaders understand corporate finance and the decision-making processes involved in understanding and developing capital structure Includes case studies from around the world that explain key financial models Emphasizes ways to minimize risk when it comes to working with capital structures There are a number of criteria that financial leaders need to consider before making any major capital investment decision. Book Corporate Capital Structures in the United States

Download or read book Corporate Capital Structures in the United States written by Benjamin M. Friedman and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research reported in this volume represents the second stage of a wide-ranging National Bureau of Economic Research effort to investigate "The Changing Role of Debt and Equity in Financing U.S. Capital Formation." The first group of studies sponsored under this project, which have been published individually and summarized in a 1982 volume bearing the same title (Friedman 1982), addressed several key issues relevant to corporate sector behavior along with such other aspects of the evolving financial underpinnings of U.S. capital formation as household saving incentives, international capital flows, and government debt management. In the project's second series of studies, presented at the National Bureau of Economic Research conference in January 1983 and published here for the first time along with commentaries from that conference, the central focus is the financial side of capital formation undertaken by the U.S. corporate business sector. At the same time, because corporations' securities must be held, a parallel focus is on the behavior of the markets that price these claims.

Book Ownership Structure as a Determinant of Capital Structure An Empirical Study of DAX Companies

Download or read book Ownership Structure as a Determinant of Capital Structure An Empirical Study of DAX Companies written by Christian Funke and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2003 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,1 (A), European Business School - International University Schlo Reichartshausen Oestrich-Winkel (Endowed-Chairf for Corporate Finance and Capital Markets), language: English, abstract: The idea that the general characteristics of a firm's ownership structure can affect performance has achieved considerable attention and related research brought forward relatively consistent empirical evidence e.g. on the positive impact of managerial ownership on firm performance. However, the evidence on the relation between ownership and capital structure is less consistent and numerous, although there are good reasons to believe that there may be such a relationship. Since the capital structure irrelevance propositions of MODIGLIANI/MILLER economists have devoted considerable time to studying cross-sectional and time-series variations in capital structure. More recent work following the seminal contribution by JENSEN/MECKLING has employed an agency theory perspective in the search for an explanation of capital structure variations. With this managerial perspective capital structure is not only explained by variations in internal and external contextual factors of the firm, but also by the values, goals, preferences and desires of managers. Corporate financing decisions are influenced by managers' incentives and the incentives for managers to act opportunistically can be influenced by the ownership structure of the firm. However, most empirical work analyzing a firm's capital structure in cross-sectional and time-series studies ignores the equity ownership structure as a possible explanatory variable. This can be partly explained by problems associated with the availability of ownership data, when compared to readily available accounting and market data on other relevant variables. Notwithstanding, it entails a problem of model misspecification as omitting a relevant variable

Book The Determinants of Capital Structure in Ethiopian Small Scale Manufacturing Industry Firms

Download or read book The Determinants of Capital Structure in Ethiopian Small Scale Manufacturing Industry Firms written by Dereje Yohannis and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 3.28, , language: English, abstract: The purpose of the study is investigating the determinants of capital structure for Small Scale Manufacturing Firms (SSMFs) in Ethiopia. Hypotheses utilizing trade-off, pecking order and agency theories are empirically examined using a series of firm characteristics: size, tangibility, profitability, earning volatility, age and macroeconomic variable (GDP growth rate, inflation rate and interest rate). A structured record review was made to collect a panel data, which include 20 SSMFs year observations of 11 years over the period 1998 – 2008 E.C. The findings suggest that profitability, earning volatility, age, growth, GDP, inflation rate and interest rate variables are the most important determinants of capital structure of SSMFs in Ethiopia. The findings also reveal that the dominant capital structure theories (trade-off, pecking order, and agency theories) appear indeed to be valid for Ethiopian SSMFs’ capital structure; in fact, trade-off theory best explains Ethiopian SSMFs’ capital structure. All firm specific variables except Size, tangibility and growth variables seem to have an effect on the level of leverage in Ethiopian SSMFs.

Book The Dynamics of Capital Structure

Download or read book The Dynamics of Capital Structure written by Michael R. Roberts and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the dynamic properties of capital structure in a state-space framework. A system of stochastic differential equations is used to specify the dynamics for a firm's debt-to-equity ratio and the determinants of capital structure. The framework addresses statistical issues such as measurement error, missing data and endogeneity. There are several important results. First, firms gradually adjust their capital structure to a firm-specific, time-varying target, as opposed to a fixed level or industry average. Second, the rate at which they revert back to the target depends on several factors: the current position of their leverage relative to the target, their industry, and their financial health. Finally, the statistical issues have a significant impact on the results and subsequent conclusions. The primary economic conclusion is that observed financing behavior may be driven by concerns over credit-worthiness and access to external funds.

Book Asymmetric Information Corporate Finance and Investment

Download or read book Asymmetric Information Corporate Finance and Investment written by R. Glenn Hubbard and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-05-15 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, specialists from traditionally separate areas in economics and finance investigate issues at the conjunction of their fields. They argue that financial decisions of the firm can affect real economic activity—and this is true for enough firms and consumers to have significant aggregate economic effects. They demonstrate that important differences—asymmetries—in access to information between "borrowers" and "lenders" ("insiders" and "outsiders") in financial transactions affect investment decisions of firms and the organization of financial markets. The original research emphasizes the role of information problems in explaining empirically important links between internal finance and investment, as well as their role in accounting for observed variations in mechanisms for corporate control.

Book Econometric Analysis of the Capital Structure Determinants

Download or read book Econometric Analysis of the Capital Structure Determinants written by Ram Kumar Kakani and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quot;Studies on capital structure have been concentrated in developed countries; a few of them have been in countries such as India. This paper provides a) an empirical examination to the widely held existing theories on the determinants of corporate capital structure and their maturity; and b) attempts to develop and test a new theory on capital structure for large manufacturing firms in developing economies such as India. For, the different empirical and managerial implications about different periods of debt instruments, we analyze measures of short-term and long-term debt rather than only an aggregate measure of total debt. The study also analyses the empirical implications of liberalization of Indian economy, on the determinants of capital structure of the firm. Some of the results were found contrary to the classical financial theory.quot.

Book An Empirical Study on the Determinants of the Capital Structure of Listed Indian Firms

Download or read book An Empirical Study on the Determinants of the Capital Structure of Listed Indian Firms written by Narayan Rao Sapar and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents empirical evidence on the determinants of the capital structure of non-financial firms in India based on firm specific data. A comparative analysis is done for pre-liberalization and post-liberalization periods. The study period and sample firms for pre-liberalization period are 1990-1992 and 498, respectively. The same for post-liberalization period are 1997-1999 and 1411. Empirical results imply that tax effect and signaling effect play a role in financing decisions where as agency costs effect financing decision of big business houses and foreign firms. It is also revealed that size of the firm and business risk became significant factors influencing the capital structure during post-liberalization period.
