Download or read book Managing Emotions in Organizations written by Riikka Harikkala-Laihinen and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-10 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a fresh perspective to acquisition research, focusing on employee emotions. It builds on the human-centric approach to mergers and acquisitions, where previous literature has concluded that emotions are important, yet few studies have explored them in depth. To fill the gap, this book takes emotion research in organizations as its starting point, exploring what emotions are, how they emerge, and how they influence organizational contexts, such as acquisitions. Whereas previous acquisition literature has concluded that emotions are most often negative and lead to complications, this book shows how emotions can become a positive force driving post-acquisition change and unification. This book combines multidisciplinary theoretical insights with practical real-world case studies to provide detailed analysis and approachable findings that will appeal to academics and practitioners alike.
Download or read book Organizational Dynamism written by R. Wayne Pace and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2001-12-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical to the success of any organization is a characteristic called dynamism. Exactly the opposite of anhedonia, or listlessness, dynamism is identified with intensity, enthusiasm, and motivation, qualities that enable people in organizations to get things done. Psychologist Wayne Pace clarifies the meaning of dynamism and its various roles in organizational functioning, provides ways to enhance and measure it, and introduces to human resource professionals a new model of career progression based upon it. Better grounded in scientific principles and data than other books dealing with topics like vitality and enthusiasm and written in a direct, positive, credible, and easy to grasp style, Pace's book covers an unusually wide range of topics--from work systems to language and interpersonal style, to modes of thinking, to mindsets--all of which he sees as dimensions of organizational dynamism and all of which play crucial roles in saving the organization from anhedonia. He makes clear that we cannot design work systems that alone will compel outstanding performance. Instead, we must find ways to release the power of individual workers themselves. His book shows why work systems are so detrimental to enthusiasm and what can be done to reverse their effects. The result is an essential explication for human resource and organizational development specialists and an enlightening introduction for top management everywhere. Pace develops his ideas from a theory of credibility consisting of three dimensions: expertise or competence, trust or confidence, and dynamism or enthusiasm. Focusing his attention on the latter, he explores the underlying mindsets that affect decisions to devote energy to work. He introduces new practices, such as Altra Teams, E-prime language, and Natural Work Goals and explores the mental sets and perceptions that workers have, things that affect the amount of energy, enthusiasm, and vigor they can devote to doing their work. He goes on to explain four work perceptions--performance, opportunity, fulfillment, and expectations or aspirations--which he identifies as basic to the way modern workers approach their tasks. Not only does his book offer a theory and explanation of dynamism, but it also provides concrete instruments to measure it and how well it is developing in your own organization. He then introduces the concepts of organizational learning and learning organizations, and closes with a chapter containing incidents, cases, and personal reports that show how other organizations actually can--and do--release dynamism in their own work settings.

Download or read book Managing Toxic Leaders and Dysfunctional Organizational Dynamics written by Seth Allcorn and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2024-04-29 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Understanding experience at work, especially in organizations that have toxic leaders and dysfunctional organizational dynamics, is a multidimensional undertaking that must include in-depth perspectives informed by psychosocial theory. This may be best accomplished by relying on complementary theories to account for what is found and experienced in our organizations and in particular a better understanding of why this is happening. "Why did she do that?" "Why did he say that?" "Why did a group react the way they did?" “Why,” is critical in terms of understanding organizational dynamics. Our lives at work in large complex and multidimensional organizations are saturated with experience, some of which is fulfilling, and some are of a darker nature that arises from the presence of toxic leaders and dysfunctional organizational dynamics. Understanding these toxicities and dysfunctions and their effect on organization members is approached by first raising their awareness at the beginning of the book before providing psychosocially informed insights that form a basis for understanding and organizational change in the following sections. This book explores these work-life dynamics by grounding them in concrete examples and then using complementary psychoanalytically informed perspectives to illuminate their underlying, often unconscious nature filling an important gap in management and organizational literature.
Download or read book Psychoanalytic Insights into Social Political and Organizational Dynamics written by Seth Allcorn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-08-16 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating interdisciplinary work explores U.S. politics since 2015 and offers psychodynamic insights into the unconscious undercurrents of contemporary culture and politics in the United States. Allcorn and Stein expertly lead readers up the steep learning curve of understanding the Trump era by exploring seven key elements of recent political dynamics. Using the complementary psychodynamic models of object relations, Group Relations and Karen Horney’s tripartite theory, this book makes sense of the Age of Trump and its chaotic world of alternate facts, conspiracy theories, reality TV politics, hoax pandemics, and the sweeping chaos of life in the United States. This sense-making relies on two triangulations. The first represents the complex systemic political scene. The second uses three psychoanalytic theories to understand social, political, and organizational dynamics. This book is a key resource for helping readers know and understand ourselves, our fellow citizens, colleagues, family, friends and what Trump and his followers call "them" such as liberals and foreign immigrants, as well as both the larger polarized social and political context in the United States today. The book also provides concrete examples of how these discoveries can be operationalized both in organizations and at the level of national government and leadership. This book is an essential reading for students in organizational behavior including leadership and how governments operate, as well as behavioral health professionals consulting or offering therapy to organizations.

Download or read book Expression of emotion in music and vocal communication written by Anjali Bhatara and published by Frontiers E-books. This book was released on 2014-08-18 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two of the most important social skills in humans are the ability to determine the moods of those around us, and to use this to guide our behavior. To accomplish this, we make use of numerous cues. Among the most important are vocal cues from both speech and non-speech sounds. Music is also a reliable method for communicating emotion. It is often present in social situations and can serve to unify a group's mood for ceremonial purposes (funerals, weddings) or general social interactions. Scientists and philosophers have speculated on the origins of music and language, and the possible common bases of emotional expression through music, speech and other vocalizations. They have found increasing evidence of commonalities among them. However, the domains in which researchers investigate these topics do not always overlap or share a common language, so communication between disciplines has been limited. The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together research across multiple disciplines related to the production and perception of emotional cues in music, speech, and non-verbal vocalizations. This includes natural sounds produced by human and non-human primates as well as synthesized sounds. Research methodology includes survey, behavioral, and neuroimaging techniques investigating adults as well as developmental populations, including those with atypical development. Studies using laboratory tasks as well as studies in more naturalistic settings are included.
