Book Conjunctions of Mind Soul and Body from Plato to the Enlightenment

Download or read book Conjunctions of Mind Soul and Body from Plato to the Enlightenment written by Danijela Kambaskovic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nexus between the corporeal, emotional, spiritual and intellectual aspects of human life as represented in the writing of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Authors from different fields examine not only the question of the body and soul (or body and mind) but also how this question fits into a broader framework in the medieval and early modern period. Concepts such as gender and society, morality, sexuality, theological precepts and medical knowledge are a part of this broader framework. This discussion of ideas draws from over two thousand years of Western thought: from Plato in the fifth century BC and the fourth century Byzantine dialogues on the soul, to the philosophical and medical writings of the early 1700s. There are four sections to this book: each section is based on where the authors have found a conjunction between the body and mind/soul. The work begins with a section on text and self-perception, which focuses on creative output from the period. The second conjunction is human emotions which are described in their social contexts. The third is sex, where the human body and mind are traditionally believed to meet. The fourth section, Material Souls, engages with bodies and other material aspects of existence perceived, studied or utilised as material signs of emotional and spiritual activity.

"I'm going to head over to the Other Side now," Goro says, and then Kogito hears a loud thud. After a moment of silence, Goro's voice continues: "But don't worry, I'm not going to stop communicating with you." Moments later, Kogito's wife rushes in; Goro has jumped to his death. With that, Kogito begins a far-ranging search to understand what drove his brother-in-law to suicide. From a feeling, [ not from the news ] like a surf wave, powerful or gentle, I flow through the work If it’s a strong feeling, writing is fast. Most times it’s slow, laborious editing. I sometimes make notes. I don’t appreciate modern poetry. This is my own work. I copy no one. I love writing! Several poems are short stories. They contain a variety of windows into the imagination and fantasy. The thoughtful ones may arouse talking points.”

Book Socioemotional Development

Download or read book Socioemotional Development written by Ross A. Thompson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Variations in childhood development are nowhere more conspicuous or important than in the development and expression of emotions. A child's capacity to understand another's feelings, to experience guilt or shame, to manipulate others emotionally, to anticipate the response of parents to displays of anger of distress, to exercise emotional control?all of these are aspects of socioemotional development. A concern with it is reflected in the efforts of researchers to understand the long-term consequences of the parent-infant attachment, the effects of maltreatment on young children, the influence of congenital disorders on their social and emotional functioning, and the origins of depression. Thus the topic of socioemotionalødevelopment has far-reaching and fascinating applications to everyday life, as the essays in this volume reveal. In Socioemotional Development leading scholars approach the topic from diverse perspectives, summarizing findings and discussing original research. They also address a number of broad developmental concerns: What are the lasting effects of early influence? What can account for the long-term consistency of individual characteristics? What are the origins of psychological disorders? To what extent is emotional experience socially constructed? How does biology affect emotion? The contributors and their works are Carol Z. Malatesta, ?The Role of Emotions in the Development and Organization of Personality?; Inge Bretherton, ?Open Communication and Internal Working Models: Their Role in the Development of Attachment Relationships?; Carolyn Saarni, ?Emotional Competence: How Emotions and Relationships Become Integrated?: Carolyn Zahn-Waxler and Grazyna Kochanska, ?The Origins of Guilt?; Dante Cicchetti, ?The Organization and Coherence of Socioemotional, Cognitive, and Representational Development: Illustrations through a Developmental Psychopathology Perspective on Down's Syndrome and Child Maltreatment.?

Spanning 150 years from post slavery to post-colonial times, this shimmering yet gritty tale unfolds against the background of declining old cocoa and sugar plantations and gushing new oil wells in the tropical Caribbean island of Trinidad. A fascinating amalgam of history and heart-wrenching drama skilfully woven together by author Bertille David-Allahar, this novel captures the odyssey of Lucy and other women of colour, through an intimate portraiture of awakening, endurance and coming of age in a stratified island society still haunted by the shadows of slavery.
