Book The Whispering of Ghosts

Download or read book The Whispering of Ghosts written by Boris Cyrulnik and published by Other Press (NY). This book was released on 2010 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One out of every two people will experience trauma, says psychiatrist Boris Cyrulnik, and one in ten will remain a prisoner of that suffering. Why are some children permanently damaged by difficult childhoods, while others grow up into secure, creative, loving adults? This book, based on Dr. Cyrulnik's broad experience with victims of childhood distress, offers a message of hope for everyone concerned about the impact of deprivation and such traumatic events as separation, emotional or sexual abuse, and violence in the environment. The ghosts of the past keep on whispering to the child within the adult. Through dozens of moving, vivid examples, Dr. Cyrulnik describes the ingredients of resilience, the ability to heal the wounded self and move on, to make sense of what happened back then and form new emotional and social ties. Affection is such a vital need, he writes, that those who were deprived of it will attach themselves intensely to anything that rekindles a spark of life, whatever the cost. From the earliest parent-child bonding to the sexual turbulence of the teenage years, this book shows what makes for success or failure in the struggle to gain freedom from early pain.

Book Building Resilience to Trauma

Download or read book Building Resilience to Trauma written by Elaine Miller-Karas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a traumatic experience, survivors often experience a cascade of physical, emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and spiritual responses that leave them feeling unbalanced and threatened. Building Resilience to Trauma explains these common responses from a biological perspective, reframing the human experience from one of shame and pathology to one of hope and biology. It also presents alternative approaches, the Trauma Resiliency Model (TRM) and the Community Resiliency Model (CRM), which offer concrete and practical skills that resonate with what we know about the biology of trauma. In programs co-sponsored by the World Health Organization, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, ADRA International and the department of behavioral health of San Bernardino County, the TRM and the CRM have been used to reduce and in some cases eliminate the symptoms of trauma by helping survivors regain a sense of balance. Clinicians will find that they can use the models with almost anyone who has experienced or witnessed any event that was perceived as life threatening or posed a serious injury to themselves or to others. The models can also be used to treat symptoms of vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue.

Book Enhancing Resilience in Survivors of Family Violence

Download or read book Enhancing Resilience in Survivors of Family Violence written by Kim M Anderson, PhD and published by Springer Publishing Company. This book was released on 2009-10-26 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This bookÖwill help change the paradigm that has gripped the mental health professions for so long and will be a positive boost for those who know there must be a better and more affirmative way to do this important work." -Dennis Saleebey, DSW Professor Emeritus School of Social Welfare, University of Kansas In this book, Kim Anderson demonstrates the extent to which individuals with histories of family violence can have "self-correcting" tendencies that promote their positive adaptation in overcoming trauma. These strengths, which often go unrecognized or underappreciated, can be used for healing. This book assists mental health practitioners in identifying, supporting, and validating the resilient capacities of their clients. Anderson provides new conceptual frameworks and clinical strategies for integrating resilience-oriented and strengths-based treatment with survivors of family violence. The book discusses resilience in survivors of childhood incest, children of battered women, and individuals formerly in violent domestic relationships. Key topics discussed: Dynamics and consequences of family oppression and violence The power of recovery and posttraumatic growth Assessments that capture client strengths, resilience, and acts of resistance Spirituality: making meaning of one's trauma and purpose in life This book challenges the premise that survivors who have suffered from family violence will remain wounded throughout life. Anderson underscores the resourcefulness of clients, and illuminates the many ways people prevail during and in the aftermath of family violence.

Book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research

Download or read book New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2014-03-25 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, child protective services receive reports of child abuse and neglect involving six million children, and many more go unreported. The long-term human and fiscal consequences of child abuse and neglect are not relegated to the victims themselves-they also impact their families, future relationships, and society. In 1993, the National Research Council (NRC) issued the report, Under-standing Child Abuse and Neglect, which provided an overview of the research on child abuse and neglect. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research updates the 1993 report and provides new recommendations to respond to this public health challenge. According to this report, while there has been great progress in child abuse and neglect research, a coordinated, national research infrastructure with high-level federal support needs to be established and implemented immediately. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research recommends an actionable framework to guide and support future child abuse and neglect research. This report calls for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to child abuse and neglect research that examines factors related to both children and adults across physical, mental, and behavioral health domains-including those in child welfare, economic support, criminal justice, education, and health care systems-and assesses the needs of a variety of subpopulations. It should also clarify the causal pathways related to child abuse and neglect and, more importantly, assess efforts to interrupt these pathways. New Directions in Child Abuse and Neglect Research identifies four areas to look to in developing a coordinated research enterprise: a national strategic plan, a national surveillance system, a new generation of researchers, and changes in the federal and state programmatic and policy response.
