Book Women in the Hindu Tradition

Download or read book Women in the Hindu Tradition written by Mandakranta Bose and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-01-19 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book accounts for the origin and evolution of the nature and roles of women within the Hindu belief system. It explains how the idea of the goddess has been derived from Hindu philosophical ideas and texts of codes of conduct and how particular models of conduct for mortal women have been created. Hindu religious culture correlates philosophical speculation and social imperatives to situate femininity on a continuum from divine to mortal existence. This creates in the Hindu consciousness multiple - often contradictory - images of women, both as wielders and subjects of authority. The conception and evolution of the major Hindu goddesses, placed against the judgments passed by texts of Hindu sacred law on women’s nature and duties, illuminate the Hindu discourse on gender, the complexity of which is compounded by the distinctive spirituality of female ascetic poets. Drawing on a wide range of Sanskrit texts, the author explains how the idea of the goddess has been derived from Hindu philosophical ideas and also from the social roles of women as reflected in, and prescribed by, texts of codes of conduct. She examines the idea of female divinity which gave rise to models of conduct for mortal women. Instead of a one-way order of ideological derivation, the author argues that there is constant traffic between both ways the notional and the actual feminine. This book brings together for the first time a wide range of material and offers fresh stimulating interpretations of women in the Hindu Tradition.

Book Woman as Fire Woman as Sage

    Book Details:
  • Author : Arti Dhand
  • Publisher : State University of New York Press
  • Release : 2009-01-01
  • ISBN : 0791479889
  • Pages : 266 pages

Download or read book Woman as Fire Woman as Sage written by Arti Dhand and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2009-01-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hindu tradition has held conflicting views on womanhood from its earliest texts—holding women aloft as goddesses to be worshipped on the one hand and remaining deeply suspicious about women's sexuality on the other. In Woman as Fire, Woman as Sage, Arti Dhand examines the religious premises upon which Hindu ideas of sexuality and women are constructed. The work focuses on the great Hindu epic, the Mahābhārata, a text that not only reflects the cogitations of a momentous period in Hindu history, but also was critical in shaping the future of Hinduism. Dhand proposes that the epic's understanding of womanhood cannot be isolated from the broader religious questions that were debated at the time, and that the formation of a sexual ideology is one element in crafting a coherent religious framework for Hinduism.

Book Jayam

    Book Details:
  • Author : Badrinath N
  • Publisher : Notion Press
  • Release : 2024-01-24
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 337 pages

Download or read book Jayam written by Badrinath N and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2024-01-24 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Jayam’ contains 7 light paths that show us the route to Dharma. These 7 light paths have been derived from the timeless ‘Mahabharata,’ and are universally applicable to all of us engrossed in playing the game of life, wherein Dharma is the goal. The chances of us losing this game of life are high due to errors of assumed goodness and ignorance of the unknown rules of nature. These limitations and pitfalls are explored in ‘Jayam,’ thereby providing us insight into dharmic consciousness and a glimpse into our own personal Dharmic Quotient (DQ). The provision of the Dharma model, the Varna model, and the Swadharma model in the book offers the reader path-maps and philosophical frameworks that pave the way for smart dharmic living. Hence, this book focuses on the lessons for life, keeping Dharma as the core. Rather than revolving around role models, this book explores the Mahabharata to learn about the fallibility of human nature. Even the greats like Dharmaputra, Arjuna, Vithura, Draupadi, Dronacharya, Bheeshmacharya and others who aspired to be in dharma, had to battle their own shortcomings and external challenges, exhibiting varying percentages of dharmic strengths and weaknesses. Taking sides that one was greater than the other, prevents us from learning invaluable lessons from them."

How did the urban poor cope with their surroundings? How did they interpret and adopt urban space in order to fight against their position at the periphery of society? This volume takes up these questions and investigates how far approaches of cultural sciences can contribute to overcome the »exoticization of the ghetto« (Loïc Wacquant) and instead to look at the heterogeneity and individuality behind the facades. It opens new perspectives for the research of poverty and inequalities that do not stop at collective categories.

Book Hanuman s Tale

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Lutgendorf
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2007-01-11
  • ISBN : 0199885826

Download or read book Hanuman s Tale written by Philip Lutgendorf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-11 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hanuman, the devoted monkey helper of Rama and Sita, has long been recognized as a popular character in India's ancient Ramayana epic. But more recently he has also become one of the most beloved and worshiped gods in the Hindu pantheon - enshrined in majestic new temples, but equally present in poster art, advertising, and mass media. Drawing on Sanskrit and vernacular texts, classical iconography and modern TV serials, and extensive fieldwork and interviews, Philip Lutgendorf challenges the academic cliché of Hanuman as a "minor" or "folk" deity by exploring his complex and growing role in South Asian religion and culture. This wide-ranging study examines the historical evolution of Hanuman's worship, his close association with Shiva and goddesses, his invocation in tantric ritual, his physical immortality and enduring presence in sacred sites, and his appeal to devotees who include scholars, wrestlers, healers, politicians, and middle-class urbanites. Lutgendorf also offers a rich array of entertaining stories not previously available in English: an expanding epic cycle that he christens the "Hanumayana." Arguing that Hanuman's role as cosmic "middle man" is intimately linked to his embodiment in a charming and provocative simian form, Lutgendorf moves beyond the Indian subcontinent to interrogate the wider human fascination with anthropoid primates as boundary beings and as potent signifiers of both Self and Other.

Book excerpt: Shri Krsna and Bhgavat Dharma by Shri Jagadish Chandra Ghose written in Bengali discusses the teachings of Shri Krsna with quotes from various books of Shstras. Shri Krsna and Bhgavat Dharma discusses mainly four subjects: First the book considers Shri Krsna as Brahman, Ishvara or Bhagavn as is meant by "Ishvarah paramah Krsnah sacchidnandavigrahah" meaning "Krsna is Ishvara; He is Sat-Cit-nanda"; this has been supported by quotations from the Vednta, Purnas and Vaishnava Shstras. Second, the discussion is on Shri Krsna's divine love plays (Lil). Through these divine love plays the Bliss or nanda aspect of Shri Krsna, the Sat-Cit-nanda is expressed. These expressions are explained with quotes from the Purnas. Third, there is discussion about the main objectives of human life. Finally, the book explains what Shri Krsna taught His disciples Arjuna and Uddhava about His doctrines and Dharma using quotes extensively from Bhagavad Git and the Bhgavat. This English translation Bhagavn Shri Krsna and Bhgavat Dharma follows the format as closely as possible to the original Bengali book.
