Book excerpt: Interrupting the Soria family’s holiday feast, childish teenager Emily requires the hospital emergency room for an apparent attack of appendicitis. But a blunt nurse explains the truth: Emily is giving birth. The seventeen-year-old has tricked her mind and body into believing she isn’t pregnant, when—in a rare but not unheard of occurrence—the baby is full term and already being born. A life-affirming, feel-good story of love, family and the special way new babies can inspire, Making Hearts introduces a character readers will strongly care about and root for. Noelle wins the hearts of all with her loving enthusiasm for life, her wit, and by personally defeating the villain’s lowdown scheme in an astonishing climax readers will never forget. Praise for MAKING HEARTS: “Wow! I’ve never read a book like this! Totally engrossing, Making Hearts is an absolute tour de force. Jack Getze has done himself proud with this work. I’ve never read a story with an infant as the protagonist and more—an infant who acts proactively against formidable opponents with overpowering advantages and wins out. This is a book of supreme imagination, originality and most of all—heart. I am in complete awe of Getze’s talent displayed supremely in this work. This is the book the cliché—you gotta read this!—was invented for.” —Les Edgerton, author of The Genuine, Imitation, Plastic Kidnapping; Bomb; The Bitch and many others

Book Let s Stop Meeting Like This

Download or read book Let s Stop Meeting Like This written by Dick Axelrod and published by Berrett-Koehler Publishers. This book was released on 2014-08-04 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ugh—meetings. They're where productivity goes to die, right? There has to be a better way. According to leading consultants Dick and Emily Axelrod, there is. Using the same principles that make video games so engaging and that transformed the numbing assembly line into the dynamic shop floor, the Axelrods outline a flexible and adaptable system used to run truly productive meetings in all kinds of organizations—meetings where people create concrete plans, accomplish tasks, build connections, and move projects forward. They show how to design every aspect of a meeting—from the way you greet people at the beginning to how you sum up at the end—so that real work actually gets done. Those who have adopted this system will never go back. Neither will you.

Wilson Literary Science Writing Award One of Nature's Summer Book Picks One of Publishers Weekly's Top Ten Spring 2013 Science Books For centuries, we've toyed with our creature companions, breeding dogs that herd and hunt, housecats that look like tigers, and teacup pigs that fit snugly in our handbags. But what happens when we take animal alteration a step further, engineering a cat that glows green under ultraviolet light or cloning the beloved family Labrador? Science has given us a whole new toolbox for tinkering with life. How are we using it? In Frankenstein's Cat, the journalist Emily Anthes takes us from petri dish to pet store as she explores how biotechnology is shaping the future of our furry and feathered friends. As she ventures from bucolic barnyards to a "frozen zoo" where scientists are storing DNA from the planet's most exotic creatures, she discovers how we can use cloning to protect endangered species, craft prosthetics to save injured animals, and employ genetic engineering to supply farms with disease-resistant livestock. Along the way, we meet some of the animals that are ushering in this astonishing age of enhancement, including sensor-wearing seals, cyborg beetles, a bionic bulldog, and the world's first cloned cat. Through her encounters with scientists, conservationists, ethicists, and entrepreneurs, Anthes reveals that while some of our interventions may be trivial (behold: the GloFish), others could improve the lives of many species-including our own. So what does biotechnology really mean for the world's wild things? And what do our brave new beasts tell us about ourselves? With keen insight and her trademark spunk, Anthes highlights both the peril and the promise of our scientific superpowers, taking us on an adventure into a world where our grandest science fiction fantasies are fast becoming reality.

Book Black Is the Body

Download or read book Black Is the Body written by Emily Bernard and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Blackness is an art, not a science. It is a paradox: intangible and visceral; a situation and a story. It is the thread that connects these essays, but its significance as an experience emerges randomly, unpredictably. . . . Race is the story of my life, and therefore black is the body of this book.” In these twelve deeply personal, connected essays, Bernard details the experience of growing up black in the south with a family name inherited from a white man, surviving a random stabbing at a New Haven coffee shop, marrying a white man from the North and bringing him home to her family, adopting two children from Ethiopia, and living and teaching in a primarily white New England college town. Each of these essays sets out to discover a new way of talking about race and of telling the truth as the author has lived it. "Black Is the Body is one of the most beautiful, elegant memoirs I've ever read. It's about race, it's about womanhood, it's about friendship, it's about a life of the mind, and also a life of the body. But more than anything, it's about love. I can't praise Emily Bernard enough for what she has created in these pages." --Elizabeth Gilbert WINNER OF THE CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD PRIZE FOR AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL PROSE NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND KIRKUS REVIEWS ONE OF MAUREEN CORRIGAN'S 10 UNPUTDOWNABLE READS OF THE YEAR

Book The Glass Dolphin Mystery Series

Download or read book The Glass Dolphin Mystery Series written by Judy Penz Sheluk and published by Superior Shores Press. This book was released on 2021-08-22 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The complete Glass Dolphin Mystery Series, now available in one collection. A small town named after a nineteenth-century traitor. A feisty antiques shop owner with a passion for authenticity. A freelance journalist with a penchant for the truth. Join amateur sleuths Arabella Carpenter and Emily Garland in the not-so-sleepy village of Lount’s Landing, where secrets, subterfuge, and real estate wranglings sometimes lead to murder. The Hanged Man’s Noose (#1) Freelance writer Emily Garland is cash-strapped, newly single, and tired of reporting on the same old condo stats. When she’s offered a lucrative assignment in the village of Lount’s Landing, she decides to take a chance. All she has to do is relocate and uncover the real story behind a proposed redevelopment plan. What could possibly go wrong? Plenty, as it turns out. Not everyone is happy with real estate mogul Garrett Stonehaven’s plans to convert an old schoolhouse into a mega-box store. At the top of the list is Arabella Carpenter, the outspoken owner of The Glass Dolphin antiques shop, who will do just about anything to preserve the integrity of the town’s historic Main Street. But Arabella is not alone in her opposition. Before long, a vocal dissenter dies. A few days later, another body is discovered. Though both deaths are ruled accidental, Emily’s suspicions are aroused. Putting her interview skills to the ultimate test, Emily teams up with Arabella to discover the truth behind Stonehaven’s latest scheme—before the murderer strikes again. A Hole in One (#2) Hoping to promote the Glass Dolphin antiques shop, co-owners Arabella Carpenter and Emily Garland agree to sponsor a hole in one contest at a charity golf tournament. The publicity turns out to be anything but positive, however, when Arabella’s errant tee shot lands in the woods next to a corpse. They soon learn that the victim is closely related to Arabella’s ex-husband, who had been acting as the Course Marshal. With means, opportunity, and more than enough motive, he soon becomes the police department’s prime suspect, leaving Arabella and Emily determined to clear his name—even if they’re not entirely convinced of his innocence. Dogged by incriminating online posts from an anonymous blogger, they track down leads from Emily’s ex-fiancé (and the woman he left Emily for), an Elvis impersonator, and a retired antiques mall vendor with a secret of her own. All trails lead to a mysterious cult that may have something to do with the murder. Can Arabella and Emily identify the killer before the murderer comes after them? Where There’s a Will (#3) Emily Garland is getting married and looking for the perfect forever home. When the old, and some say haunted, Hadley house comes up for sale, she’s convinced it’s “the one.” The house is also perfect for reality TV star Miles Pemberton and his new series, House Haunters. Emily will fight for her dream home, but Pemberton’s pockets are deeper than Emily’s, and he’ll stretch the rules to get what he wants. While Pemberton racks up enemies all around Lount’s Landing, Arabella Carpenter, Emily’s partner at the Glass Dolphin antiques shop, has been hired to appraise the contents of the estate, along with her ex-husband, Levon. Could the feuding beneficiaries decide there’s a conflict of interest? Could Pemberton? Things get even more complicated when Arabella and Levon discover another will hidden inside the house, and with it, a decades-old secret. Can the property stay on the market? And if so, who will make the winning offer: Emily or Miles Pemberton?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emily Saunders, an eighty-five-year-old widow of means, lives in an affluent suburb of Brisbane and has everything she needs, but she is lonely. Her family does not have the time to check on her because of their busy lives. She phones her friend Audrey Thomas, also a widow, and asks her to accompany her on a cruise, and she is delighted. They had been through high school together and are still the best of friends. During the cruise, there is a talent quest; and as Audrey, also eighty-five, always wanted to be a singer, she entered and won the first and second contests, then was requested by the audience to do concerts, which were well-attended on the ship. On the cruise, they stopped at a small island that was very little, and the two ladies went to visit the school, which had very little tools, books, and things needed to run any school. Audrey and Emily decided to start a charity for the school. It was doing really well, and some big company names generously gave their products just for a mention in their advertisement. The women did well and soon outfitted the school from the donations received. After their second cruise, requested by the company for Audrey to do more concerts on board, they delivered all the goods, and the children did a concert on the ship for thanks and built up a good rapport with the passengers who all wanted to help this poor island school and joined the charity. They arrived back in Brisbane to the television news showing that a huge cyclone had washed away the homes of the children of the Vitu School and all the terrible devastation. Many families living in the school and hospital on the hill are the only buildings standing fully intact. The cruise ships couldnt go in for the debris everywhere, so there was no income from the islanders wares. It was full steam ahead with the charity. Audreys two sons came and voluntarily managed the funds coming in through the charity. Audrey does a huge concert in Brisbane with other supporting acts in a stadium for seventy-five thousand people and kept the charity money building. There were fifty-six tradesmen of all persuasions who went voluntarily and did an amazing job, all being filmed to show the people where their hard-earned donations had been used for. From this, Audrey, who has dreamed of having her own concert all her life, made DVDs and CDs that sold out and won awards. They both got humanitarian awards and, after a full-on three years, decided to slow down and take it easy. This is a wonderful story of love, friendship, family, and human kindness and proves that age is just a number.

To dig up the truth behind the mysterious death of a senator's daughter, private investigator Rachel Anderson is going back to school. Passing herself off as a transfer student at the small, prestigious college the troubled girl last attended--funded by the powerful Shepherd's Cross Ministry--Rachel finds the secluded campus almost too idyllic, and the girls invited to participate in the "Eve's Circle" honors group too perfect. Too feminine. Too obedient. But putting an end to the shocking operation requires more than just a cover--and it means trusting the brooding Elijah Trent, a CIA operative also working the campus from the inside. Together, they plan to expose the ministry's unspeakable secret, a crime which reaches outside U.S. borders and into the realm of pure evil. . .
