Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Immigration, settlement, and integration are vital issues in the twenty-first century—they propel economic development, transform cities and towns, shape political debate, and challenge established national identities. This original collection provides the first comprehensive introduction to the contemporary immigrant experience in both the United States and Canada by exploring national, regional, and metropolitan contexts. With essays by an interdisciplinary team of American and Canadian scholars, this volume explores major themes such as immigration policy; labour markets and the economy; gender; demographic and settlement patterns; health, well-being, and food security; education; and media. Each chapter includes instructive case examples, recommended further readings, links to web-based resources, and questions for critical thought. Engaging and accessible, Immigrant Experiences in North America will appeal to students and instructors across the social sciences, including geography, political science, sociology, policy studies, and urban and regional planning.

Book Migrants and Migration in Modern North America

Download or read book Migrants and Migration in Modern North America written by Dirk Hoerder and published by Duke University Press Books. This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting an unprecedented, integrated view of migration in North America, this interdisciplinary collection of essays illuminates the movements of people within and between Canada, the Caribbean, Mexico, and the United States over the past two centuries. Several essays discuss recent migrations from Central America as well. In the introduction, Dirk Hoerder provides a sweeping historical overview of North American societies in the Atlantic world. He also develops and advocates what he and Nora Faires call “transcultural societal studies,” an interdisciplinary approach to migration studies that combines migration research across disciplines and at the local, regional, national, and transnational levels. The contributors examine the movements of diverse populations across North America in relation to changing cultural, political, and economic patterns. They describe the ways that people have fashioned cross-border lives, as well as the effects of shifting labor markets in facilitating or hindering cross-border movement, the place of formal and informal politics in migration processes and migrants’ lives, and the creation and transformation of borderlands economies, societies, and cultures. This collection offers rich new perspectives on migration in North America and on the broader study of migration history. Contributors. Jaime R. Aguila. Book Emigration from the United Kingdom to North America 1763 1912

Download or read book Emigration from the United Kingdom to North America 1763 1912 written by Stanley Currie Johnson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1913, this valuable and scholarly work is an account of the flow of population from the British Isles to the United States and Canada during the nineteenth century and the author's extensive researches into government reports and papers has brought together a great deal of material which gives his book an important place as an authority on British emigration. The work begins with a short historical survey in which the author discusses the causes of emigration before treating the subject topically as a series of political and economic problems. He gives a detailed account of the transport and reception of emigrants, of emigration restrictions and colonisation schemes, and of the emigration of women and children, and presents with much force the conflict of interests that grew up between England and her colonies respecting migration. This must still be regarded as an authoritative work on the subject and its bibliography will be of great value to all students of the period.

Book Repositioning North American Migration History

Download or read book Repositioning North American Migration History written by Marc S. Rodriguez and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth look at trends in North American internal migration. This volume gathers established and new scholars working on North American immigration, transmigration, internal migration, and citizenship whose work analyzes the development of migrant and state-level institutions as well as migrant networks. With contemporary migration research most often focused on the development of transnational communities and the ways international migrants maintain relationships with their sending region that sustain the circularflow of people, ideas, and traditions across national boundaries it is useful to compare these to similar patterns evident within the terrain of internal migration. To date, however, international and internal migration studies have unfolded in relative isolation from one another with each operating within these distinct fields of expertise rather than across them. Although there has been some important linking, there has not been a recent major consideration of human migration that works across and within the various borders of the North American continent. Thus, the volume presents a variety of chapters that seek to consider human migration in comparative perspective across the internal/international divide. Marc S. Rodriguez is Assistant Professor of History at Princeton University; Donna R. Gabbaccia is the Mellon Professor of History at the University of Pittsburgh; James R. Grossman is theVice President of Research and Education at the Newberry Library, Chicago. Contributors: Josef Barton, Wallace Best, Donna Gabbaccia, James Gregory, Tobias Higbie, Mae Ngai, Walter Nugent, Annelise Orleck, Kunal Parker, Kimberly Phillips, Bruno Ramirez, Marc Rodriguez Repositioning North American Migration History is a volume in Studies in Comparative History, sponsored by Princeton University's Shelby Cullom Davis Center forHistorical Studies.
