Book Emerson and Environmental Ethics

Download or read book Emerson and Environmental Ethics written by Susan Dunston and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the core of Emerson’s philosophy is his view as a naturalist that we are “made of the same atoms as the world is.” In counterpoint to this identity, he noted the fluid evolution and diversity of combinations and configurations of those atoms. Thus, he argued, our “relation and connection” to the world are not occasional or recreational, but “everywhere and always,” and also reciprocal, ongoing, and creative. He declared he would be a naturalist, which for him meant being a knowledgeable “lover of nature.” Emerson’s famous insistence on an “original relation to the universe” centered on morally creative engagement with the environment. It took the form of a nature literacy that has become central to contemporary environmental ethics. The essential argument of this book is that Emerson’s integrated philosophy of nature, ethics, and creativity is a powerful prototype for a diverse range of contemporary environmental ethics. After describing Emerson’s own environmental literacy and ethical, aesthetic, and creative practices of relating to the natural world, Dunston delineates a web of environmental ethics that connects Emerson to contemporary eco-feminism, living systems theory, Native American science, Asian philosophy, and environmental activism.

Book excerpt: Nature is an essay written by Ralph Waldo Emerson, and published by James Munroe and Company in 1836.[1] In the essay Emerson put forth the foundation of transcendentalism, a belief system that espouses a non-traditional appreciation of nature.[2] Transcendentalism suggests that the divine, or God, suffuses nature, and suggests that reality can be understood by studying nature.[3] Emerson's visit to the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris inspired a set of lectures he later delivered in Boston which were then published.Within the essay, Emerson divides nature into four usages: Commodity, Beauty, Language and Discipline. These distinctions define the ways by which humans use nature for their basic needs, their desire for delight, their communication with one another and their understanding of the world.[4] Emerson followed the success of Nature with a speech, "The American Scholar", which together with his previous lectures laid the foundation for transcendentalism and his literary career.

Book Natural Abundance

Download or read book Natural Abundance written by Ralph Waldo Emerson and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Ruth L. Miller interprets a few essential essays by Ralph Waldo Emerson that tell us how the world always responds to our thoughts, words, and actions, and what we can do to ensure that our life is truly joy-filled in all aspects. In clear, simple language, she gives us a direct sense of what Emerson felt, saw, and struggled to share with his fellow human beings. Emerson transcended the limitations of his day. Using common sense, a love of nature, and his own particular genius, he expressed a higher truth about who we are and how the world gives us exactly what we demand from it. Yet, perhaps because he was so popular, and because so much of what was popularized focused on the need to transcend materialism and reconnect with Nature, some of his core ideas were lost to later generations. They were there, buried in the long sentences and extended paragraphs of his often-overlooked essays—but were discovered only by the few who were willing to take the time and seek them out. These few became great teachers in their own right, the founders and leaders of institutions and movements that have changed history. Natural Abundance makes the hidden treasures of Emerson’s wisdom accessible to 21st century readers. Through it, this great man’s alignment of his heart’s knowing and his intellect’s understanding can lead all of us to a more abundantly fulfilling life, today.

Book excerpt: The impact of Emerson's Nature was enormous, soon making it the manifesto of the growing movement of Transcendentalism. In its often seemingly random and loosely organized essays, Emerson articulated the core beliefs of the Transcendentalists: the unity of all things within the consciousness of an "Over-Soul," the divinity within each human being, and the ability of the individual to transcend worldly reality through Nature. In its "Introduction," he argued modern people accepted the world through the dead traditions of the past, but that through Nature man might "enjoy an original relation to the universe." Ultimately, what Emerson proposed in the book was that what is conventionally thought of as religious salvation is achieved not through adherence to stiff doctrine, but through the immediacy of experience in life. Nature also established Emerson as America's leading intellectual, a role he was to fulfill for the rest of his life. Over the next twenty years Emerson lectured widely and published a series of essays that articulated American views of art, philosophy, and literature including The American Scholar, "Self-Reliance," "The Over-Soul," "The Poet," and "Experience." In these essays, Emerson is credited with establishing an American literary "Declaration of Independence" complete with a philosophic framework that respected native notions of self-reliance, common sense, and democracy. His ideas were not without controversy. For instance, invited to speak to the graduating class of the Harvard Divinity School in 1838, Emerson delivered an address which virtually ostracized him from the more conservative New England clergy, many of whom had until that time embraced him. In what is commonly called The Divinity School Address, Emerson challenged the notion that spiritual truth is received solely through Scripture. Instead, he insisted upon a return to original spiritual experience which could not "be received second hand," and that the role of the ministry was to invest humanity with "new hope and new revelation." Emerson also became recognized as a major poet during this period, though his poetry is little more than versification of the ideas more directly stated in his prose works. His most popular poem is also among his earliest, "Concord Hymn" (1837) commemorating "the shot heard round the world" of the American Revolution. Many of his poems endure as significant contributions to American Romanticism, particularly those like "The Rhodora" (1839) and "The Snow-Storm"(1841). Other poems like "Hamatreya" (1847) and "Brahma" (1857) demonstrate intellectual Emerson's debt to Hindu and Eastern mysticism.
