Book excerpt: Chytridiomycosis is an infectious disease of amphibians caused by the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), and it has played an important role in the worldwide decline of amphibians. My dissertation research examined the consequences of Bd infections on tadpole feeding biomechanics and activity, pathogen transmission, and host immunology. The keratinized labial teeth of Bd-infected Fowler's Toad (Anaxyrus [=Bufo] fowleri) and Grey Treefrog (Hyla versicolor) tadpoles slipped off of surfaces on which they grazed and were in contact with an algal-covered surface for a shorter duration of time during each feeding cycle. During feeding trials, Bd-infected A. fowleri and H. versicolor tadpoles obtained significantly less food and were less active during feeding relative to non-infected tadpoles. Collectively, these data show that Bd-infected tadpoles are less efficient and less active while feeding and provide a potential mechanism for reduced growth and development in Bd-infected tadpoles of these species. In artificial ponds, A. fowleri tadpoles raised in the presence of Bd aggregated significantly more relative to controls, whereas H. versicolor aggregated significantly less. In addition, ponds with A. fowleri tadpoles supported higher Bd prevalences and infection intensities relative to ponds with H. versicolor, suggesting that aggregation behavior may impact intraspecific Bd transmission. Independent of species, tadpoles raised in the presence of Bd were smaller and less developed than tadpoles raised in disease-free conditions, even when Bd prevalence was low. Although A. fowleri tadpoles seem more susceptible to Bd and carry heavier infections, our results suggest that Bd can negatively impact larval life history traits associated with fitness. To test possible mechanisms related to differential Bd susceptibility, I raised Southern Leopard Frog (Lithobates sphenocephalus) tadpoles on diets that differed in their protein content. Tadpoles fed a low-protein diet had less effective immune responses (PHA-induced skin-swelling resonse and the ability of tadpole blood to kill E. coli), increased susceptibility to Bd, and were less developed relative to tadpoles fed a high-protein diet. However, the immune responses of tadpoles infected with Bd were similar, suggesting that neither T cell recruitment nor cytotoxicity of tadpole blood (i.e., PHA and bacterial killing ability, respectively) specifically inhibit Bd infections. .

It is packed with unique insights from the author who, in the late 1960s, was probably Britain’s first professional amphibian conservationist. At that time, the situation for amphibians was extremely serious after three decades of population decline. Up to the 1990s, Arnold Cooke was directly involved in understanding and trying to remedy the situation via research, legislation and active conservation. He initiated long-term monitoring, surveillance and studies that continued well into this century. This research developed and utilised simple monitoring techniques, such as counting breeding newts at night or toads dead on roads. The resulting datasets also proved of value in determining whether breeding behaviour was affected by climate change. This personal overview charts in detail how amphibian conservation developed from a relatively low knowledge base with few individuals involved to an abundance of information available for the many groups of people now active in the field. It includes published, unpublished and no longer readily accessible material, to emphasise how contemporary knowledge, attitudes and resources affected what was done and what happened as a result. Various policies, strategies, laws and other initiatives have helped stop or slow declines, but the future is still uncertain. The book will appeal to a broad readership, from naturalists to professional herpetologists. Furthermore, this story will have relevance for amphibian conservation in other countries in light of their more recent widespread declines. Book excerpt: Long celebrated for its more than 7,100 islands, the Philippines is a country in Southeast Asia that shares only with Madagascar the distinction of having been designated as both a Megadiverse Nation and a Global Biodiversity Conservation Hotspot. The terrestrial vertebrate fauna of the northeastern Philippines, specifically Luzon Island, has been the subject of intense interest since the first historical explorations. Historically, numerous works considered the biodiversity of Luzon as ?depauperate? in the sense that they was presumed to contain a reduced number of species shared with a continental mainland source. This view has persisted until recently, when a renewed interest in faunistic studies of the northern Philippines has produced a series of notable discoveries, drawing attention to high levels of species diversity and endemism in the northern reaches of the archipelago. We provide the first report on the herpetological biodiversity (amphibians and reptiles) of the northern Sierra Madre Mountain Range, northeast Luzon Island, Philippines. We combine new and historical data, and the results of recent fieldwork, to highlight at least 101 species present in this unique region of the archipelago. Not only is this fauna largely endemic (approximately 70%), but also our results add to a nascent body of literature suggesting that the northern portions of the archipelago may be substantially more diverse than currently appreciated.
