Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the Unexpected presents the wealth of information derived from disasters around the world over the past 25 years. The authors explore how these findings can improve disaster programs, identify remaining research needs, and discuss disaster within the broader context of sustainable development. How do different people think about disaster? Are we more likely to panic or to respond with altruism? Why are 110 people killed in a Valujet crash considered disaster victims while the 50,000 killed annually in traffic accidents in the U.S. are not? At the crossroads of social, cultural, and economic factors, this book examines these and other compelling questions. The authors review the influences that shape the U.S. governmental system for disaster planning and response, the effectiveness of local emergency agencies, and the level of professionalism in the field. They also compare technological versus natural disaster and examine the impact of technology on disaster programs.

Book Reinventing Disaster Response

Download or read book Reinventing Disaster Response written by United States. Federal Emergency Management Agency and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is not an evaluation but a record of key issues that emerged and policies that were developed as Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) managers worked to deliver fast, effective, and humane assistance to those individuals and communities affected by the disaster. The overarching intent is to provide a record for guiding future disaster response. This document covers the first five weeks of disaster operations. The issues reflected in this report were selected for their importance to overall national emergency management strategy, rather than to technical program management.

Book Lessons Learned During Northridge Earthquake Response

Download or read book Lessons Learned During Northridge Earthquake Response written by United States. Federal Emergency Management Agency. Office of Financial Management and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 63 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the FEMA reorganization implemented in the fall of 1993, the Chief Financial Officer was given greatly increased responsibility for operation of the Disaster Relief Fund and for supporting financial processing at disaster locations. The Northridge Earthquake, which occurred shortly after the reorganization, marked the first time the Office of Financial Management (OFM) assumed an active role in this new assignment. Major organizing and work processing challenges had to be overcome to carry out our mission, due to: (1) the fact that OFM staff was not afforded time to develop and implement detailed plans for its new responsibilities, and (2) the burden created by a record number of assistance applications. The purpose of this lessons learned report is to determine how OFM can better serve our customers and deliver sound financial management services in support of response and recovery efforts following disasters. A collateral purpose is to recommend immediate actions to be completed to ensure optimum readiness to respond in the event another catastrophic disaster occurs in the near future.

Book Disciplines Disasters and Emergency Management

Download or read book Disciplines Disasters and Emergency Management written by David A. McEntire and published by Charles C Thomas Publisher. This book was released on 2007 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disasters such as the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the Indian Ocean Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina illustrate the salience and complexity of disasters. Both scholars and practitioners therefore agree that we must take a more proactive and holistic approach to emergency management, which should logically be derived from a sound understanding of the academic literature and the most pressing concerns facing professionals in the field today. Disciplines, Disasters and Emergency Management reviews what is known about catastrophic events from the standpoint of various academic areas of study. The introductory chapter by the editor, David A. McEntire, discusses the importance of and difficulties associated with multi- and interdisciplinary research on disasters and emergency management. Well-known scholars such as Drabek, Gibbs, Pine, Scanlon, Sylves, Waugh, Zakour and others then join efforts with budding students who have recently been exposed to the disaster management profession. Their review of our current level of knowledge represents 23 disciplines including geography, engineering, sociology, gerontology, public administration, international relations, law, environmental management, criminal justice, and information science, etc. The concluding chapter summarizes the contributions of various disciplines, identifies potential research opportunities, and describes ways to address future disaster problems. Besides comparing the similarities and differences among the findings from diverse fields of study, Disciplines, Disasters and Emergency Management suggests that scholars may increase their comprehension of disasters by focusing attention on the unique concept of vulnerability. Recommendations for disaster reduction also make this a useful book for professionals in emergency management. Whether you are a seasoned expert in disaster research or a novice in emergency management, this book will help you acquire cutting-edge knowledge about disasters and emergency management.

Book Children and Disasters

Download or read book Children and Disasters written by Norma Gordon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When disaster strikes, survivors suddenly find themselves in a world that has become confusing and unfamiliar. Such traumatic events impose severe psychological strain on every member of a community, but children are a particularly vulnerable group requiring special attention. Children and Disasters addresses the needs of this specific population by examining the impact of major disasters on the mental health and emotional functioning of children. The programs described in this book are designed to provide early intervention to children and families undergoing stress reactions to a catastrophic event. The authors offer interventions aimed at enhancing the skills of mental health professionals, educators, and peer counselors in responding to the intensified demands of disasters. These intervention approaches provide information regarding the event itself, reinforce the legitimacy of the anxieties and fears that children and their families are experiencing, and encourage the expression of feelings in group and individual settings (for the younger child, through drawing and play). Furthermore, they build on the coping capacity of individuals and theirs families and provide concrete coping skills and techniques to alleviate stress reactions. The intervention model can be applied to programs for individual children and their families, multi-family groups, and groups for children in mental health, educational, and community settings. The practical "hands-on" approach to program design makes this book an attractive resource for mental health professionals, social workers, rehabilitation specialists, professional and volunteer counselors, and suicide intervention workers. It will also be useful for school personnel, including teachers, school counselors, and administrators, as well as federal and state emergency planners and coordinators.
