To determine whether or not nursing faculty feel adequately prepared to teach emergency preparedness to nursing students, whether they feel like they have curriculum resources to assist them with their teaching duties, and how much time each program devotes to this subject, a non-experimental descriptive research study was conducted. Program directors of their designees who participate in the study were invited to complete a questionnaire to self-assess their program and how it teaches emergency preparedness. The population invited to participate were program directors or their designees of register nursing programs in the state of Arkansas. With a 38.5% response rather showing 70% of respondents are currently teaching emergency preparedness content in their curriculum and 80% of respondents feeling either adequately or very prepared, the conclusion can be drawn that the number of programs teaching this content has increased and faculty confidence in ability to teach this content has increased significantly in the past few years.

Recent evidence shows that up to 30% of all those injured in a disaster will sustain a burn-related injury. Nurses have taken a leading role in helping hospitals prepare for these disasters. Emergency Room nurses especially need to be prepared for any type of disaster to strike at any time. This includes being prepared for patients with burns. During a disaster, transferring a burned patient to a burn specialty center might be delayed, or may not even be immediately possible due to the shortage of burn beds around the country. Also, communications problems and an overloaded burn specialty center could lead to the ability to consult with burn experts. This study was performed assess the preparedness of Arkansas Emergency Room nurses for a burn-related disaster. Members of the Arkansas Emergency Nurses Association were invited to participate in a survey based on a modified Community-Based Burn Management and Care Instrument, a research-verified reliable and valid tool. The survey was completed by 10 participants. It consisted of 24 multiple choice or true/false questions and one 4 point Likert Scale self-assessment. The average score was 60% correct on the 24 knowledge-based questions. 60% of participants rated themselves as somewhat competent, somewhat competent, and not competent. Further research is needed to assess the problem, and education and training are needed to help nurses treat burn injuries and increase their confidence.

Book excerpt: Much of the disaster nursing literature reviewed echoes the need for development of a disaster content in nursing curriculum (Duarte & Haynes, 2006; Kahalaieh, Bond, & Alasad, 2012; Littleton-Kearney & Slepski, 2008; Smith, 2007). There is continued debate over emergency preparedness (EP) content that should be included in the curriculum, where it fits, who teaches it, and what clinical experiences are needed to prepare nurses for the future (Duarte & Haynes, 2006; Kahalaieh et al., 2012; Littleton-Kearney & Slepski, 2008; Slepski, 2007; Smith, 2007). The purpose of this study is to examine the lived experiences of nurses first time responding to a civilian disaster response in shelters or temporary community medical clinics in an attempt to identify the essential knowledge and skills necessary to provide care to disaster victims. The theoretical framework for this study was the theory of novice to expert, experiential learning, clinical reasoning, and using real life situations to develop the student's sense of salience by Benner et al. (1996, 2009; 2010). This study utilized the narrative inquiry to explore the phenomena of nurses' experiences in a disaster for the first time. There were several new findings revealed in this study: lack of prior knowledge of how to volunteer during a disaster response; none of the nurse responded directly during the acute mass casualty phase of the disaster and described their work as "like a clinic"; a majority noted previous experience in mass casualty exercise did not help them with their actual response in the community; specific assessment skills needed to conduct an assessment on the disaster victim in the community setting; and the use of inconsistent and outdated EP terminology in undergraduate textbooks. In light of these new findings, I attempted to directly address these gaps during the development of proposed Model for Level One: Basic Nursing Disaster Curriculum which is included in the discussion.
