Without duty, honor, or something to fight for, his life is as good as over. Bui the CIA needs a man like Vornado… A terrorist cabal has acquired a scrapped Soviet sub from the Cold War—a technologically advanced failure still able to outrun any torpedo or enemy vessel and strike at will. With a nuclear payload, it will enable the terrorists to fire directly on Israel—and throw the world into chaos. All that remains is to modernize the sub with the latest technology. Only one man can infiltrate the group, take the helm, and stop a holocaust—a man who has already stared down death, and is ready to do battle once more…

Book Emergency Deep

Download or read book Emergency Deep written by Alfred Scott McLaren and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conveys in dramatic detail the high-risk, covert operations of a nuclear attack submarine during the zenith of the Cold War Captain Alfred Scott McLaren served as commander of the USS Queenfish (SSN 651) from September 1969 to May 1973, the very height of the Cold War. As commander, McLaren led at least six major clandestine operations, including the first-ever exploration of the entire Siberian Continental Shelf: a perilous voyage detailed in his previous book Unknown Waters. Emergency Deep: Cold War Missions of a Submarine Commander conveys the entire spectrum of Captain McLaren’s experiences commanding the USS Queenfish, mainly in the waters of the Russian Far East and also off Vietnam. McLaren offers a riveting and deeply human story that illuminates the intensity and pressures of commanding a nuclear attack submarine in some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable. Relying on his own notes and records, as well as discussions with former officers and shipmates, McLaren focuses on operational matters both great and small. He recounts his unique perspectives on attack-submarine tactics and exploratory techniques in high-risk or uncharted areas, matters of leadership and team-building and the morale of his crews, and the innumerable and often unforeseen ways his philosophy of command played out on a day-to-day basis, with consequences that ran the gamut from the mundane to the dire and life-threatening. Readers are also treated to significant new information and insight on submarine strategy, maneuvers, and culture. Such details illuminate and bring to life, with both great humor and gravitas, the intensity and pressures on those engaged in covert missions on nuclear attack submarines.

  • Author : Neil Strauss
  • Publisher : Harper Collins

  • ISBN : 0060898771
  • Pages : 436 pages

Download or read book Emergency written by Neil Strauss and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-03-10 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrorist attacks. Natural disasters. Domestic crackdowns. Economic collapse. Riots. Wars. Disease. Starvation. What can you do when it all hits the fan? You can learn to be self-sufficient and survive without the system. **I've started to look at the world through apocalypse eyes.** So begins Neil Strauss's harrowing new book: his first full-length worksince the international bestseller The Game, and one of the most original-and provocative-narratives of the year. After the last few years of violence and terror, of ethnic and religious hatred, of tsunamis and hurricanes–and now of world financial meltdown–Strauss, like most of his generation, came to the sobering realization that, even in America, anything can happen. But rather than watch helplessly, he decided to do something about it. And so he spent three years traveling through a country that's lost its sense of safety, equipping himself with the tools necessary to save himself and his loved ones from an uncertain future. With the same quick wit and eye for cultural trends that marked The Game, The Dirt, and How to Make Love Like a Porn Star, Emergency traces Neil's white-knuckled journey through today's heart of darkness, as he sets out to move his life offshore, test his skills in the wild, and remake himself as a gun-toting, plane-flying, government-defying survivor. It's a tale of paranoid fantasies and crippling doubts, of shady lawyers and dangerous cult leaders, of billionaire gun nuts and survivalist superheroes, of weirdos, heroes, and ordinary citizens going off the grid. It's one man's story of a dangerous world–and how to stay alive in it. Before the next disaster strikes, you're going to want to read this book. And you'll want to do everything it suggests. Because tomorrow doesn't come with a guarantee...

Book Modelling Emergency Situations in the Drilling of Deep Boreholes

Download or read book Modelling Emergency Situations in the Drilling of Deep Boreholes written by Sergii Glazunov and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-10-31 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of easily acquiring oil and gas is over. Now, to extract these resources, deep vertical and curvilinear, off-shore and ground-based boreholes are drilled in inclement climate conditions and in complex heterogeneous tectonic rocks. Additional novelties have also been assimilated into these technologies by the shale revolution. The techniques and methods of borehole drivage are developing so fast that scientific understanding and substantiation have no time to refine them. Therefore, as a rule, different unpredictable emergency effects and overall failures accompany these procedures. The gravest of these are buckling of the drill strings, their resonant vibrations, their sticking during dragging and twisting, the self-triggering of torsional relaxation vibration, and the self-excitation of forward, backward, and superfast bit whirlings. To analyse these phenomena, this volume elaborates new mathematic models and numerical methods. On the basis of these, a special software was created, which allowed new results concerning the peculiarities of the affected phenomena to be achieved. The book will be of interest to borehole designers and specialists in mechanics and applied mathematics.

Choi comes a compulsively readable novel that shows young love in all its awkward glory—perfect for fans of Eleanor & Park and To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before. For Penny Lee, high school was a total nonevent. Her friends were okay, her grades were fine, and while she’d somehow landed a boyfriend, they never managed to know much about each other. Now Penny is heading to college in Austin, Texas, to learn how to become a writer. It’s seventy-nine miles and a zillion light years away from everything she can’t wait to leave behind. Sam’s stuck. Literally, figuratively, emotionally, financially. He works at a café and sleeps there too, on a mattress on the floor of an empty storage room upstairs. He knows that this is the god-awful chapter of his life that will serve as inspiration for when he’s a famous movie director but right this second the seventeen bucks in his checking account and his dying laptop are really testing him. When Sam and Penny cross paths it’s less meet-cute and more a collision of unbearable awkwardness. Still, they swap numbers and stay in touch—via text—and soon become digitally inseparable, sharing their deepest anxieties and secret dreams without the humiliating weirdness of having to, you know, see each other.

Book Disaster Management and Emergency Medicine in the Asia Pacific Region Current Practices and Future Directions

Download or read book Disaster Management and Emergency Medicine in the Asia Pacific Region Current Practices and Future Directions written by Kenneth N. K. FONG and published by City University of HK Press. This book was released on 2023-07-19 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around the world, people and societies are at risk of being affected by disasters, both natural and man-made. In the face of climate change and human activity, the threat posed by unexpected disasters is likely to increase in future. This book, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, offers insights from experts in healthcare and higher education both locally and further afield. Some of the authors have first-hand experience with various elements of disaster management through such events as the 2008 earthquake in Sichuan, the COVID-19 pandemic, and large-scale competitions including the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon. Key learnings and recommendations are presented in three sections: disaster management and reconstruction, including what we can learn from past earthquakes; the importance of healthcare and emergency medicine in disasters and community events; and the way forward, in particular how technology and systems thinking can be used for disaster mitigation. By shedding light onto future work in disaster management and emergency medicine in Hong Kong and East Asia, this book aims to contribute to community resilience in the region and beyond. It will be useful for tertiary and postgraduate programmes, teachers and academics, practitioners, healthcare providers, policymakers, and community leaders.
