Book This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared

Download or read book This Is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared written by Alan Lew and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2003-08-01 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this “journey of spiritual transformation” (Publishers Weekly) award winning author Rabbi Alan Lew follows the practices and rituals of the Jewish High Holy Days and guides readers through heartbreak, contemplation, and re-birth. There are times in life when we are caught utterly unprepared: a death in the family, the end of a relationship, a health crisis. These are the times when the solid ground we thought we stood on disappears beneath our feet, leaving us reeling and heartbroken, as we stumble back to our faith. The Days of Awe encompass the weeks preceding Rosh Hashanah up to Yom Kippur, a period in which Jews take part in a series of rituals and prayers that reenact the journey of the soul through the world from birth to death. This is a period of contemplation and repentance, comparable to Lent and Ramadan. Yet, for Rabbi Alan Lew, the real purpose of this annual passage is for us to experience brokenheartedness and open our heart to God. In This is Real and You Are Completely Unprepared, Lew has marked out a journey of seven distinct stages, one that draws on these rituals to awaken our soul and wholly transform us. Weaving together Torah readings, Buddhist parables, Jewish fables and stories from his own life, Lew lays bare the meanings of this ancient Jewish passage. He reveals the path from terror to acceptance, confusion to clarity, doubt to belief, and from complacency to awe. In the tradition of When Bad Things Happen to Good People, This Is Real And You Are Completely Unprepared enables believers of all faiths to reconnect to their faith with a passion and intimacy that will resonate throughout the year.

"A work of rich clear sensual language, of 'thermal tremble and juice,' these poems and photos pull the weaver's threads together, bring focus to 'wherein we can be a root to the sea.' Sinewy lines are constantly 'quoting my biology back to me as vow' and display a 'multi-creative musculature' we desperately need and desire. j/j is the real deal, reclaiming a space for engendered anarchy, opening Pandora's secret treasure trove, playing with fire, sound and love"—Anne Waldman.

Book Lithuanian Jewish Communities

Download or read book Lithuanian Jewish Communities written by Nancy Schoenburg and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1996-10-01 with total page 517 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lithuanian Jewish Communities is a remarkable resource for students of Lithuanian Jewish history and for people descended from Lithuanian Jews. This volume lists, in alphabetical order, the major Jewish communities that existed in Lithuania before World War II. The name of each community is accompanied by information about it: when it was founded, the Jewish population in different years, shops and synagogues, and the names of citizens. An appendix locates each town on a map of Lithuania. Since most of the Jewish communities in Lithuania were destroyed in the Holocaust, this volume will be a valuable tool in recreating a picture of Lithuanian Jewry. Other appendices provide member lists from Lithuanian Jewish organizations throughout the world and list agencies that will provide help in further research on Lithuanian Jewry. Descendants of Lithuanian Jews who wish to trace their genealogy will be greatly helped by Lithuanian Jewish Communities.

Book Daniel S Seventieth Week

Download or read book Daniel S Seventieth Week written by Ronald F. Green and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2018-06-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are fast approaching the end of the last generation of life on the earth as we know it. But are you prepared for these last days? Do you know how to identify the signs of the end? Can you recognize the fulfillment of the Lords revealed prophecies? Daniels Seventieth Week offers a day-by-day account of what to expect during the seven years of this generation that Jesus said would not pass until everything he had spoken of had been fulfilled. Author Ronald F. Green provides a calendar of the events before eternity begins, including the events of the seals that will be opened, the seven trumpets of God that will sound, and the seven vials (bowls) of Gods wrath. He also explores the world events that will precede Jesuss second comingthe agreement between Israel and its enemies, the rebuilding of both the inner temple and the third temple, and the two witnesses Enoch and Elijah, when they start and end their 1,260-day ministry. After this, Jesus Christ will set his feet on the Mount of Olives, enter the rebuilt temple, and start his millennial reign. God has revealed to us so much about the last days. There is only one resurrection of the righteous dead, and there is only one catching away of the living righteous. If this occurs before you turn your life over to Jesus Christ and yield to his revealed truth and prophecy, then your eternity will have been decided by your own choice.

Book The Origins of the Second Temple

Download or read book The Origins of the Second Temple written by Diana Vikander Edelman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-05 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Darius I, King of Persia, claims to have accomplished many deeds in the early years of his reign, but was one of them the rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem? The editor who added the date to the books of Haggai and Zechariah thought so, and the author of Ezra 1-6 then relied on his dates when writing his account of the rebuilding process. The genealogical information contained in the book of Nehemiah, however, suggests otherwise; it indicates that Zerubbabel and Nehemiah were either contemporaries, or a generation apart in age, not some 65 years apart. Thus, either Zerubabbel and the temple rebuilding needs to be moved to the reign of Artaxerxes I, or Nehemiah and the rebuilding of the city walls needs to be moved to the reign of Darius I. In this ground-breaking volume, the argument is made that the temple was built during the reign of Artaxerxes I. The editor of Haggai and Zechariah mistakenly set the event under Darius I because he was influenced by both a desire to show the fulfillment of inherited prophecy and by Darius widely circulated autobiography of his rise to power. In light of the settlement patterns in Yehud during the Persian period, it is proposed that Artaxerxes I instituted a master plan to incorporate Yehud into the Persian road, postal, and military systems. The rebuilding of the temple was a minor part of the larger plan that provided soldiers stationed in the fortress in Jerusalem and civilians living in the new provincial seat with a place to worship their native god while also providing a place to store taxes and monies collected on behalf of the Persian administration.
