Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many strategic change efforts fail. And virtually all of them are harder than they need to be. Why is this? And what can we do to make change more likely to stick? Dr. Elsbeth Johnson, a former equity analyst and London Business School Professor now teaching at MIT, has spent a decade researching how to deliver strategic change in practice. Based on asking managers what they needed from leaders, rather than just asking leaders what they did, her resulting Step Up, Step Back approach challenges some of our most fundamental beliefs about how to lead change – and indeed, about what we even consider to be 'leadership'. The Step Up, Step Back approach suggests leaders need to step up and do more than they typically do in the early stages of the change – in specific ways and at specific times; and then step back and do less than they typically do in the later stages of the change – again, in specific ways, at specific times. The result is not only change that sticks, but empowered, motivated managers who can get on with delivering change, without needing ongoing input or cover from leaders. Using real-world examples of how to apply the science in practice, Step Up, Step Back gives you a roadmap for how to deliver strategic change in your organization.

Book excerpt: Recipient of the prestigious Mom's Choice Award honoring excellence, a Moonbeam Children's Book Award medal winner and a 2015-2016 New Book Award winner, and described by Midwest Book Review as "about as fine a middle school fantasy as you could get: vivid, packed with ghosts and mystery, and yet tempered with an attention to interpersonal depth that is rare and inviting." ElsBeth and the Call of the Castle Ghosties is set in the present on Cape Cod and the Scottish Highlands and is the coming-of-age tale of a young witch with a family legacy to protect the natural world. When their ancestral lands in the Highlands are threatened, three ancient ghosts of the castle need one of their clan from the living world. They call the young Cape witch across the sea. ElsBeth has a personal calling to protect the natural world, and her own need to know more about the family line. Drawn deep into the present danger, and into the mysteries of the old country and of her family heritage, she is in well above her magic level. Includes seventeen original color illustrations. Storyteller Ink: "I want to very highly recommend ElsBeth and the Call of the Castle Ghosties. I found it humorous and entertaining. The story caught my interest quickly due to the character development. There is a sense of adventure, responsibility and fun in this book. One of my favorite things was the way the kids in the story worked together to understand and solve a problem, which helped others. I love stories that have a positive outcome due to the inventiveness and courage of kids! And this book is rich in this quality. Read it and spread the word. This one is really enjoyable!!!"

Book excerpt: Recipient of the prestigious Mom's Choice Award honoring excellence and a 2015-2016 New Book Award winner. (Originally published as The Cape Cod Witch and the Legend of the Pirate.) On a field trip to Boston's historic Freedom Trail, ElsBeth and her classmates encounter a famous freedom fighter, the ghostly Captain Thomas Jacques, who spirits them across treacherous waters to Nantucket Island — in the daring rescue attempt of a kidnapped, modern-day Arabian prince. Along the way they find out about fighting for freedom and caring for something bigger than themselves. Readers also discover a treasure chest of historical nuggets and Cape and Islands lore, together with a brief sketch of the authentic pirates featured in Books I and II. Includes twenty-three original color illustrations. Odyssey Reviews: This story is filled to the brim with adventure, plenty of vivid and likable characters (even the cranky teacher, Ms. Finch) and topped with history and important environmental lessons for the young reader. ElsBeth serves as a lovely example of a tenacious and passionate girl, who is able to navigate and overcome some fairly scary adversities to positively help those in need in the end. Finally, illustrator Melanie Therrien has also returned to include her vibrant pictures that add a perfect touch and emphasis to this Cape Cod Witch Series. And if that's not enough to capture a reader's attention, there is real history information and recipes tucked in the back of the book. The treasures in this tale will undoubtedly capture young readers' hearts, as they wonder what will happen next, and should definitely not be passed over.

This book was released on 2014-01-28 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recipient of the prestigious Mom's Choice Award honoring excellence and a 2015-2016 New Book Award winner. When Halloween approaches, a never-quite-forgotten pirate's treasure awakens some serious trouble in the sleepy Cape Cod town. ElsBeth Amelia Thistle, who happens to be the youngest witch on the Cape, and her friend Johnny Twofeathers, chief-to-be of the local Wampanoag tribe — together with a cast of spirited classmates and curious magical creatures (including two troublesome fairies from the old country) — must face off against dangerous outsiders, and the notorious pirate Billy Bowlegs, to restore the balance of past and present, good and evil. Includes nineteen full-color illustrations. Ypulse Book Editor (subsequently with Publishers Weekly): I don't usually do this, but Pirate's Treasure got such rave reviews from my two nephews and my sister I felt I had to pass it on. What makes my nephews' recommendations so remarkable is that they're sort of reluctant readers. One in particular devours comics but mostly 'reads' the illustrations. 'Star Wars' books are their favorites. And hey, anytime two boys jump up and down (literally) and implore me to read something, I listen. My nephew said all of the kids in his third grade class love this book, bar none. My sister said they read it aloud together as a family and she thought it was fabulous, too. Really fabulous, and they all can't wait for the next one. It's like "Sabrina the Teenage Witch" crossed with Sarah Plain and Tall—sort of. Earthy and homemade feeling, the writing and story read like local folklore but with contemporary characters. I can see why it's a hit with younger readers and I, too, liked it a lot. Reading ElsBeth and the Pirate's Treasure made me wonder—what exactly made this work for both the girls and boys in my nephew's posse? Is it the fact that ElsBeth's class share the spotlight and together are the main characters? I wish there were more titles that crossed gender lines. We talk a lot about finding books that boys will like because they are traditionally harder readers to please, but what about books that boys and girls can enjoy together? Maybe books that simply allow girls and boys to share the stage is the answer.

Download or read book Elsbeth written by Harold Lawrence Myra and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When David first met her, Elsbeth was a beautiful, vibrant missionary-nurse laboring in a remote African hospital. From the very beginning, the American doctor admired her gutsiness in working in this primitive outpost, so far from her native Switzerland, her marvelous gift of laughter, her openly-expressed affection for the African people, her strong commitment to the Lord. Elspeth, in turn, secretly enjoyed his attentions, yet there was a dark cloud hanging over her. Years ago, she had crossed romance out of her life when the only man she loved abruptly ended their relationship. There had been loves since then, but now her future belonged to God, to His people in Ngoshe who needed her help so desperately. And yet, here was this persistent doctor again, at her elbow like an eager, mooning schoolboy. Nevertheless, two people who love the Lord as deeply as David and Elsbeth did, cannot reject the earthly love He had place in their hearts. On the last day they spent together in Africa, David, acting on faith, proposed. Elsbeth accepted. Shortly after, they exchanged wedding vows amidst the storybook setting of the Swiss village where Elsbeth was born. Returning to a mission post in Nigeria, involved in the work they both loved, the Christensens welcomed two sons and an adopted African daughter into their lives. Their joy seemed exquisitely complete. Then, "Dave, I'm afraid it can't last," cried Elsbeth, prophetically. "Our marriage is almost to complete. We have it so good." On leave in America, Elsbeth suddenly, inexplicably fell ill. The diagnosis came back with brutal swiftness: acute leukemia. The reality of cancer is harsh and unyielding, and the human love David and Elsbeth shared could never be the cure-all for the daily pressures and pain they endured.

Download or read book Theological Aesthetics written by Gesa Elsbeth Thiessen and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While interest in the relationship between theology and the arts is on the rise, there are very few resources for students and teachers, let alone a comprehensive text on the subject. This book fills that lacuna by providing an anthology of readings on theological aesthetics drawn from the first century to the present. A superb sourcebook, Theological Aesthetics brings together original texts that are relevant and timely to scholars today. Editor Gesa Elsbeth Thiessen has taken a careful, inclusive approach to the book, including articles and extracts that are diverse and ecumenical as well as representative of gender and ethnicity. The book is organized chronologically, and each historical period begins with commentary by Thiessen that sets the selections in context. These engaging readings range broadly over themes at the intersection of religion and the arts, including beauty and revelation, the vision of God, artistic and divine creation, God as artist, images of God, the interplay of the senses and the intellect, human imagination, mystical writings, meanings of signs and symbols, worship, liturgy, doxology, the relationship of word and image, icons and iconoclasm, the role of the arts in twentieth-century theology, and much more.
