Book excerpt: This volume presents selections from the highly-respected Cosby collection of African American art. Their introductions elaborate on their strong belief that African American families should themselves seek to preserve their cultural history and not rely on the mainstream. They also provide interesting background about how they began their collection and what owning the art has meant to them. The essay by Driskell (curator, author, and scholar) places each artist within the context of his or her era from the late 1700s to the present, and explores the historical, biographical, social, and political background of each period. Also contains biographies of the artists. Beautifully illustrated with 91 color plates and several other illustrations. Oversize: 10.25x13.25". Annotation copyrighted by Book News Inc., Portland, OR

Book African American Connecticut Explored

Download or read book African American Connecticut Explored written by Elizabeth J. Normen and published by Wesleyan University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-27 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Connecticut League of Historic Organization Award of Merit (2015) The numerous essays by many of the state’s leading historians in African American Connecticut Explored document an array of subjects beginning from the earliest years of the state’s colonization around 1630 and continuing well into the 20th century. The voice of Connecticut’s African Americans rings clear through topics such as the Black Governors of Connecticut, nationally prominent black abolitionists like the reverends Amos Beman and James Pennington, the African American community’s response to the Amistad trial, the letters of Joseph O. Cross of the 29th Regiment of Colored Volunteers in the Civil War, and the Civil Rights work of baseball great Jackie Robinson (a twenty-year resident of Stamford), to name a few. Insightful introductions to each section explore broader issues faced by the state’s African American residents as they struggled for full rights as citizens. This book represents the collaborative effort of Connecticut Explored and the Amistad Center for Art & Culture, with support from the State Historic Preservation Office and Connecticut’s Freedom Trail. It will be a valuable guide for anyone interested in this fascinating area of Connecticut’s history. Contributors include Billie M. The growth and popularity of auction houses have altered the relationship between artists and collectors. In its third edition, this book provides updated information on artists, galleries, museums, auctions, organizations and publications for both experienced and aspiring collectors of self-taught, outsider and folk art. Book Legendary Locals of Norwich

Download or read book Legendary Locals of Norwich written by Beryl Fishbone and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-23 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norwich measured nine square miles in the 1659 deed that Mohegan chief Uncas gave to the brave English settlers from Old Saybrook. The names of the citys streets and parks are testaments of the pride the community has in its towns residents and history. Stories abound of Norwich natives and American revolutionaries like John Durkee, who made the kings tax representative resign; scoundrel Maj. John Mason, who ordered the Mystic massacre of 100 men; and traitor Benedict Arnold, who burned the nearby city of New London. Legendary Locals of Norwich also sheds light on Norwichs more modern heroes and heroines, whose everyday actions give homage to the past, recognition to the present, and courage and vision to the future. Featured are Stanley Israelite, whose personal drive has helped businesses and individuals succeed; Eileen Akers, whose actions changed the world for students; the philanthropy of Harold Ross; and the pride of retailer Jackie Quercia.

Book Blackbeard Island

Download or read book Blackbeard Island written by Joe Cunningham and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2023-04-22 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a small book with some thirty photographs, some beautiful, some grim. The book especially remembers and memorializes two Aiken, SC, law enforcement officers who were shot to death while doing their duty. The two died, a decade ago, from bullets to their heads. Their abrupt, unexpected deaths (and other like deaths) have placed the temper of police and policing on a short fuse. A second theme is to analyze the post-mortems on George Floyd, to see what evidence they offer for his cause of death. There is little concrete evidence in these post-mortems for an officer-inflicted cause of death. The postmortems reveal potential causes of death, all non-traumatic, such as established heart disease, and ingested Fentanyl and other drugs. George Floyd’s specific cause of death, while easy to speculate upon, is not so easy to assign. It is written that philosophy is the tool one uses to debunk myth, to demystify myth to arrive at a better truth. Here is some philosophy. A third theme examines how we raise our children. The book addresses the mal effects the phenomena known as Adverse Childhood Events have on the developing child. These events are known to harm children both emotionally and physically. The mechanism of injury from such abuse is being studied and is thought by some investigators to be the inhibition of brain growth, particularly in the filling in of specific zones of gray matter. Blackbeard Island is an island of low sand and maritime forest. Accessible only by boat, it is a federal wildlife refuge on the mid-Georgia coast. Its acreage is a third of Manhattan’s; its permanent population is zero. Larger, harder Manhattan has close to two million residents.

Book They Called Me Grandpa Ruley

Download or read book They Called Me Grandpa Ruley written by Valerie Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2019-02-18 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about Ellis Ruley. He was born on December 3, 1882, in Norwich, Connecticut. He was married to Ida and they had a daughter named Marion. Ida passed away at an early age. Marion and William had a daughter named Gladys. Eleven years later, Marion married Douglas. In June 1924, Ellis married Wilhelmina. Ellis Ruley died January 17, 1959 at the age of 77. We Remembered. We Took Time to Understand. We Moved Forward."My, mother, Gladys knew Ellis better than anyone. She called him Grandpa. Although, she did not like talking about her past. Gladys told me that she lived with her grandfather, Ellis until she was able to make it on her own," revealed Valerie. Gladys said, "We lived a simple life, in a small house, in a small town. We grew fruits and vegetables in the gardens. We grew the food we ate. We only bought things at the store that we could not grow in the garden. We used chopped wood as fuel to cook, clean and keep warm. It was hard work, but we survived. As a child, Grandpa taught me to be responsible, to be grateful and to be mindful of others." "I believe, Ellis Ruley lived during the most transformational eras of American History. This is a snapshot of his life," said Valerie.
