Book Numerical Generation of Composite Three Dimensional Grids by Quasilinear Elliptic Systems

Download or read book Numerical Generation of Composite Three Dimensional Grids by Quasilinear Elliptic Systems written by P. D. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is presented for constructing a boundary-conforming grid throughout a general three-dimensional flow region as a composite of subregion grids. Each subregion grid is generated numerically by solving quasilinear system of elliptic equations. The boundary values represents nodal points in a quasi-two-dimensional grid that covers the curved surface bounding the subregion, and are generated numerically by a modified elliptic system. The boundary values are used to computer grid control parameters that are contained in the elliptic systems. This provides flexible control over the distribution of grid points in the interior of the region, in that the interior grid distribution is governed by the distribution of points on the boundary as well as by boundary's geometric shape. A primary feature of the technique is that the composite three-dimensional grid remains both continuous and smooth across the surface of juncture between any two adjoining subregions. The present paper elucidates the details of the method and of its implementation, and displays numerical results for both surface grids and space grids. Comprehensive results are displayed for a three-dimensional grid about a simple wing-body combination. A numerical example is presented of a surface grid on a NACA 0012 airfoil, with high resolution of the wingtip region. (Author).

Book Multiblock Grid Generation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Fluid Dynamics research, especially for aeronautics, continues to be a rewarding and industrially relevant field of applied science in which to work. An enthusiastic international community of expert CFD workers continue to push forward the frontiers of knowledge in increasing number. Applications of CFD technology in many other sectors of industry are being successfully tackled. The aerospace industry has made significant investments and enjoys considerable benefits from the application of CFD to its products for the last two decades. This era began with the pioneering work ofMurman and others that took us into the transonic (potential flow) regime for the first time in the early 1970's. We have also seen momentous developments of the digital computer in this period into vector and parallel supercomputing. Very significant advances in all aspects of the methodology have been made to the point where we are on the threshold of calculating solutions for the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations for complete aircraft configurations. However, significant problems and challenges remain in the areas of physical modelling, numerics and computing technology. The long term industrial requirements are captured in the U. S. Governments 'Grand Challenge' for 'Aerospace Vehicle Design' for the 1990's: 'Massively parallel computing systems and advanced parallel software technology and algorithms will enable the development and validation of multidisciplinary, coupled methods. These methods will allow the numerical simulation and design optimisation of complete aerospace vehicle systems throughout the flight envelope'.

Book Three Dimensional Grid Generation for Complex Configurations Recent Progress

Download or read book Three Dimensional Grid Generation for Complex Configurations Recent Progress written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 161 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This AGARDograph surveys some of the capabilities of the CFD community for griding complex three-dimensional configurations. The intent is to provide some insight as to the present state of grid generation for aircraft configurations in order to help assess whether this task presents a long term stumbling block to routine use of CFD in aerodynamic applications. This AGARDograph begins with a brief review of some of the techniques that are available for generating body-conforming curvilinear grids. In order to assess capabilities in grid generation, colleagues at selected institutions were solicited to describe their experiences and difficulties in grid generation of complex configurations. The intent here was not to describe the very latest in grid generation procedures, but to solicit honest comments about what are the difficulties in generating practical grids and what steps are taken to meet these difficulties. These experiences, which comprise the heart of this AGARDograph, are presented as case histories. Keywords: Computational fluid dynamics; Nato furnished; Aerodynamic configuration; Grids(coordinates); Computation; Computer graphics; Wing body configurations; Generating functions; Evaluation. (JHD).

Book Geometry Definition and Grid Generation for a Complete Fighter Aircraft

Download or read book Geometry Definition and Grid Generation for a Complete Fighter Aircraft written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in computing power and numerical solution procedures have enabled computational fluid dynamicists to attempt increasingly difficult problems. In particular, efforts are focusing on computations of complex three-dimensional flow fields about realistic aerodynamic bodies. To perform such computations, a very accurate and detailed description of the surface geometry must be provided, and a three-dimensional grid must be generated in the space around the body. The geometry must be supplied in a format compatible with the grid generation requirements, and must be verified to be free of inconsistencies. This paper presents a procedure for performing the geometry definition of a fighter aircraft that makes use of a commercial computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing system. Furthermore, visual representations of the geometry are generated using a computer graphics system for verification of the body definition. Finally, the three-dimensional grids for fighter like aircraft are generated by means of an efficient new parabolic grid generation method. This method exhibits good control of grid quality, and generate grids about 50 times faster than comparable grids generated via elliptic algorithms.
