This book was released on 2019-02-21 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frederic Dannay (1905-1982) was--with his partner Manfred Lee--the creator of the Ellery Queen detective novels and short stories. Dannay was also a literary historian and critic, and the editor of the renowned Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine. Queen--both a pen name and the fictional protagonist of the stories--was also a vital force behind the continuing popularity of crime fiction in the early to mid-20th century, after the deaths of Arthur Conan Doyle, G.K. Chesterton, Melville Davisson Post, and other Old Masters of the genre. This book presents the first critical study of Ellery Queen's role in the preservation of the detective short story. Many of the writers, characters and stories EQMM championed are covered, including such celebrated authors as Allingham, Ambler, Ellin, Innes, Vickers, and even William Butler Yeats.

Book The Emergence of a Modern City

Download or read book The Emergence of a Modern City written by Henriette Steiner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-23 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an exploration of how urban life in Copenhagen, in the period known as the Golden Age (c. 1800 to 1850), was experienced and structured socially, institutionally, and architecturally. It draws on a broad historical source material - spanning urban anecdotes, biography, philosophy, literature, and visual culture - to do so. The book argues that Copenhagen emerged as a modern city at this time, despite the fact that the Golden Age never witnessed the appearance of the main characteristics of the modernisation of cities associated with industrialisation, such as street lighting, sewer systems, and railroads. The book outlines the historical and topographical context of Copenhagen in the Golden Age with a special focus on the works of the most prominent architect of the period, C.F. Hansen. The characterisation of the city is complemented by investigations into writings of three citizens: the philosopher Soren Kierkegaard, the novelist Thomasine Gyllembourg, and the criminal Ole Kollerod, who all take an interest in the city's institutional and urban structures as well as their own place in it. From these different sources, a picture is painted of urban life and thought at a time when the city began to take on characteristics of ambiguity and alienation in European thinking, while at the same time the city itself retained some pre-modern motifs of a symbolic order. This transformation is set in a larger process of cultural re-orientation, from traditional Baroque culture to what might be termed Romantic culture. The book reconsiders the significance of this transformation for the emergent order of the modern European city in the nineteenth century and thus of the very foundation on which our own urban culture rests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Ten stories prove the superiority of Forensic pathology over coroner’s findings . . . Science and murder in a firm partnership.” —Kirkus Reviews Nothing much gets past Midwest pathologist Dr. Daniel Webster Coffee, whose whip-smart mind provides logical solutions to what seem like unsolvable cases. While detectives search for motives, Dr. Coffee provides the means, searching for microscopic clues on bodies and evidence with an unbeatable combination of imagination and intelligence. In ten Golden Age mystery stories, Lawrence G. Blochman pits Dr. Coffee, his able assistant Dr. Motilal Mookerji, and police lieutenant Max Ritter against criminals who, in an earlier era, might have just gotten away with murder. The former sweetheart of a married man dies after meeting him in a hotel room. Was the cause of death a faulty gas heater, the man himself, or his jealous wife? Dr. Coffee delivers the shocking results in “Old Flame.” “Stacked Deck” proves that even the fingerprints of a convicted killer don’t point to murder, when Dr. Coffee reveals the deadly consequences of poetic justice. Hang around for “Calendar Girl” and find out how a printer’s death from heart failure turns into an authentic homicide during Dr. Coffee’s investigation. These stories, and seven more, immerse you in a world of justice where forensics foil foul play every time.
