Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The loss of a loved one is a devastating and soul-destroying experience. The loss of a dearly beloved parent for a child not yet old enough to reason why, leaves an abyss of pain and confusion and a world that seems unchanged, yet isn't at all the same. Black emptiness and the need to continue as normal, despite the very foundation of life being ripped out from under you, becomes a daily challenge. Attendance at routine events, household chores, school projects, dealing with friends and their inability to deal with your loss any more than you can don't stop, and despite the emptiness and anguish, life goes on. Somehow the pieces have to be picked up, woven into the anguish and meaning restored. Ella's Story evolved out of a school visit to Samson House in Fremantle. Frederick Samson was a third-generation descendant of one of Western Australia's earliest pioneering families and also one of the longest serving mayors of the city of Fremantle in Western Australia. Students at Orana Primary School in Willetton, Western Australia, on a school visit to Samson House, were assigned to write a story about the visit to Samson House. Rather than embark on an account of the visit, the poignancy of the author's pain at the loss of her beloved father has been skillfully woven into Ella's Story, simultaneously delivering a sense of a child's anguish and inexplicable pain in the search for meaning into life's tragedies, the reaching out for a parent, and the agony of not knowing what the future holds. Ella's Story is a child's book, but it opens up a world of insights into the development of a child's anguish in combating one of the real and inevitable challenges likely to be faced by young and old alike as they traverse along life's journey. Excellent reading for both children and adults.

Book Lift as You Climb

Download or read book Lift as You Climb written by Patricia Hruby Powell and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learn about the civil rights activist Ella Baker in this inspiring picture book from Sibert Honor winner Patricia Hruby Powell and Caldecott Honor winner R. Gregory Christie. “What do you hope to accomplish?” asked Ella Baker’s granddaddy when she was still a child. Her mother provided the answer: “Lift as you climb.” Long before the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 60s, Ella Baker worked to lift others up by fighting racial injustice and empowering poor African Americans to stand up for their rights. Her dedication and grassroots work in many communities made her a valuable ally for leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and she has been ranked as one of the most influential women in the civil rights movement. In the 1960s she worked to register voters and organize sit-ins, and she became a teacher and mentor to many young activists. Caldecott Honor winner R. Gregory Christie’s powerful pictures pair with Patricia Hruby Powell’s poignant words to paint a vivid portrait of the fight for the freedom of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: To survive another generation, they'll need to live among the shifters. Long ago, a world war waged between shapeshifters and humans. Humans lost, and the consequences were dire…. Ella is part of a clan hidden deep in the forests of Washington State. She doesn't know if there are other human clans out there or if hers in the last one, but she knows there isn't a future for her people if they don't do something drastic. All of her life, she has heard horror stories about the Others, the beasts that surround them in high-tech dwellings beyond the mountains, but the Others may be their only hope. Ty Bearclaw, a grizzly shifter, is the curator at the Washington State Animal Sanctuary, Research, and Observation Center (WSASROC). A call from a rancher about something causing an unusual kind of havoc along the borders of the National Forest brings him to the Olympic Mountain National Park, where Ty is furious to discover that the rancher placed a trap to capture the creature on government-protected property. It isn't an animal caught in the trap, though—it's a human woman! Her entire species was believed to be extinct! What is even more confounding is his bear's reaction to the female. All his life he wondered who his mate would be, what she'd be like, what kind of shifter she would be. He never once considered that his mate might not be a shifter at all, and her very presence would change their understanding of the past and the future. A NY Times and USA Today bestselling author, the internationally acclaimed S.E. Smith presents a new story with her signature humor and unpredictable twists! Exciting adventure, hot romance, and iconic characters have won her a legion of fans. Over TWO MILLION books sold!

Book Cinderella s Secrets

Download or read book Cinderella s Secrets written by George Helou and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-01 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The depths of Ella's most intimate thoughts are revealed to show how she managed to harness her inner wisdom and move beyond being enslaved by her past, into a new life filled with love and abundance. The classic story of Cinderella urges a child to be kind with no exceptions. Yet being constantly kind to those who feel the need to take advantage can cause us to become vulnerable to being exploited, bullied and left disillusioned with low self-esteem.To also suggest that life miraculously works in our favour by just being kind, regardless of our personal need for respect and dignity can leave us powerless as we wait to be saved. Ella's world hit rock bottom as the stepmother and stepsisters had gone to the Royal Ball without her. Ella was left depressed, staring into the fireplace. Falling into a deep trance by the fire, Ella's realisations began to flood her mind with how some of her assumptions about how to treat herself and others contributed to her struggle. This was the beginning of a profound metamorphosis that would see a meek and timid girl move into her wisdom and power as a young woman. Ella made it to the Ball. Not because of a fairy godmother waving a wand but because Ella discovered the magic that comes from within. This is a remarkable journey of a girl who learned the art of reinventing herself to reclaim her self-worth and become empowered to make her precious dreams come true. It is a journey we all have the opportunity of taking as we grow in life and discover the assumptions we have made in our past that hold us back. It is a celebration, wrapped around a beautiful fairytale of old, of how we learn to rediscover ourselves and move into who we truly are and to be where we truly belong.
