Book excerpt: Defense attorney Robin Lockwood faces an unimaginable personal disaster and her greatest professional challenge in the next New York Times bestselling Phillip Margolin's new legal thriller, The Darkest Place. Robin Lockwood is an increasingly prominent defense attorney in the Portland community. A Yale graduate and former MMA fighter, she's becoming known for her string of innovative and successful defense strategies. As a favor to a judge, Robin takes on the pro bono defense of a reprehensible defendant charged with even more reprehensible crimes. But what she doesn't know—what she can't know—is how this one decision, this one case, will wreak complete devastation on her life and plans. As she recovers from those consequences, Robin heads home to her small town of Elk Grove and the bosom of her family. As she tries to recuperate, a unique legal challenge presents itself—Marjorie Loman, a surrogate, is accused of kidnapping the baby she carried for another couple, and assaulting that couple in the process. There's no question that she committed these actions but that's not the same as being guilty of the crime. As Robin works to defend her client, she learns that Marjorie Loman has been hiding under a fake identity and is facing a warrant for her arrest for another, even more serious crime. And buried within the truth may once again be unexpected, deadly consequences.

Now that she has passed away, I feel it is time to share some of the more life affecting things a caregiver experiences. Every article I read on this subject is always very careful in the manner in which it expresses concern for the health and welfare of the caregiver while consistently keeping the health and welfare of the patient first.
Download or read book Eleven Life Lessons Learned from ALS written by Okey Nwangburuka and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-11-15 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diagnosis of ALS especially within the context of robustly healthy premorbid pre-diagnosis functioning strikes fear into the heart of not just the one so diagnosed but also family members, friends, colleagues, well-wishers, and acquaintances. In the ensuing months following diagnosis, the horror, torture, and anguish of experiencing one's body degenerate, the loss of function, the helplessness, the associated indignity of not being able to fully participate in life as previously done can become likened to crawling through the valley of the shadow of death. My manuscript is tripartite in format. I titled it, Eleven Life Lessons Learned from ALS. The first part, "Eleven Life Lessons Learned from ALS," focuses on the challenges that come with illness and how to overcome the damaging internal dialogue that constantly strives to strip you of hope. It helps you to realize that the journey will require you traveling light, not wasting your pain and re-prioritizing your life. The second part, "Letters to My Fab Four" are thoughts, feelings, and emotions I share with my young children about various life issues such as relationships, emotional stability and happiness, success, and many other topics. The third part is a collection of poems about my pain, my fears and tears, hope and experiences about being on the receiving end of medical services having spent the last three decades on the other side. Hopefully, the daily triumph of hope in the face of helplessness and hopelessness of ALS can encourage anyone facing any impossible situation to know that with God, all things are possible.

Download or read book KID SISTER written by Judy Light and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-12-10 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it always with brothers and sisters that there are those days when you just don’t see eye-to-eye on much of anything? It is on those days that we wonder...was I adopted or what? Then you hear someone say, “Well....you can pick your friends, however, you can’t pick your family.” And you laugh and say to yourself....at times I can’t even pick good friends.” Family members are onboard through it all....the good and the bad. Judy Light has lived in Northern California since she was twenty-eight years old. However, she grew up in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, attending schools and doing all the normal things a young southern girl does....and then she moved away. This story is about the interaction over a long period of time between Judy and her brother Lonnie. The journey will take you first to their childhood days and then quickly to adulthood. You will see how two people who didn’t get along as children are more or less the same two people as adults. How circumstances and love bring these two people together and how life teaches, the human compassion of loving someone and letting them go. The story is humorous and will tickle your funny bone...yet, at times, it will make you sad and reflective about how life can throw you a curve ball. The writer writes from her heart, allowing you to see as she paints the pictures of her happiness, her sadness and the wonderful people that she calls family and friends. Read and enjoy.

Book excerpt: Prior to 1956, the area now known as Elk Grove Village was a massive cornfield. On July 17, 1956, Elk Grove Village was incorporated as a village, with a population of 116. Since that time, the growth of the village can only be described as phenomenal. Over 50 years, the village has dramatically changed since those early days of cornfields. American Indians called the region Wapiti, meaning elk.
