Van Dijk’s concept of Critical Discourse Analysis in view of racism in the Press. At first it is important to shortly introduce the concept of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) that has been created and discussed by Fowler, Van Dijk and Fairclough. Additionally, one has to define the special kind of racism that is conveyed in the newspapers, and how it succeeds in being almost imperceptible for the reader. Here, one also has to take into consideration in what way racism becomes pivotal concerning society and societal structures. The analysis, that adheres to Van Dijk’s concept, which he introduces and explains in ‘Racism and the Press’, will focus on six main analytical aspects, concerning the newspapers’ headlines, the local semantic structures and semantic strategies, style and rhetoric, subjects and topics, as well as an analysis of quotations patterns. Additionally, it will be explained, how and with which means the Press succeeds in influencing their readers. All examples, which are used in this paper, are taken from van Dijk’s analysis. The possibility of a new investigation would have been attractive and interesting but would definitely go beyond the scope of this paper. By examining and presenting Van Dijk’s concept of analysing and interpreting newspaper articles in order to find constructions of racism, it will in the end make possible to assess the necessity and usefulness of his concept.

How do we make sense of these contradictions? In White Race Discourse: Preserving Racial Privilege in a Post-Racial Society, John D. Foster examines the numerous contradictions sixty-one white college students exhibit as they discuss a variety of race matters. Foster demonstrates that the whites interviewed possess a sophisticated method of communication to come across as ambivalent, tolerant, and innocent, while simultaneously expressing their intolerance, fear, and suspicion of nonwhite Americans. Whether intended or not, this ambivalence assists in efforts to preserve social inequities while failing to address racial injustices. While many scholars have written about the “racetalk” of whites, few have succeeded in bridging both the theoretical and methodological gaps between whiteness scholars and discourse analysts. White Race Discourse presents evidence that these white Americans are “bureaucrats of whiteness” in that they defend the racial status quo through their discourse. He presents a first inventory of elite discourse and racism in Spain and Latin America by examining discursive reactions in Spain to recent immigration, as well as age-old racism and ethnicism in text and talk in Latin America (especially Mexico, Brazil, Argentina and Chile). Through careful analysis of the media, political discourse, textbooks and other public discourses in these countries he shows that discursive euro-racism is ubiquitous also in countries outside Europe. Spain reproduces, but as yet in a less radical way, the kind of racist discourse we find elsewhere in Western Europe. In Latin America, ethnicism and racism against the indigenous peoples and against Afrolatins has prevailed in elite discourse since colonialism and slavery. This is the first integrated study of discursive racism in the Latin world and provides a useful framework for similar research.
