Book excerpt: In this fifth and final installment of The Dark Apostle, barber-surgeon-turned-sorcerer Elisha must save plague-stricken England from its path of destruction--or risk succumbing to the very dark magic he is trying to eradicate. Elisha was once a lowly barber-surgeon from the poorest streets of 14th-century London; now, he may be the most powerful magus alive. He faces the necromancers, a shadowy cult of magi who draw their power from fear and murder--and who have just unleashed the greatest plague the world has ever known upon a continent already destabilized by wars, assassinations, and religious conflict. Empires and armies are helpless with no clear enemy to fight. The Church loses its hold upon the faithful as prayers go unanswered. Europe has become a bottomless well of terror and death, from which the necromancers drink deep as the citizens sink into despair. Elisha knows that if there is to be any chance of survival, he must root out the truth of the pestilence at its unexpected source: the great medical school at Salerno. There, Elisha might uncover the knowledge to heal his world. But as he does, his former mentor, the beautiful witch Brigit, lays her own plans. For there may be one thing upon the face of the planet deadlier than the plague: the unfiltered power of Death within Elisha himself.

Book Elisha and the End of Prophetism

Download or read book Elisha and the End of Prophetism written by Wesley J. Bergen and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-05-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Elisha the prophet have received scant attention in recent years, perhaps because they are so enigmatic. This study places the Elisha material firmly within the narrative of Genesis-2 Kings, and examines the effect these stories have on the reader's perception of the role of the 'prophet'. Using the narratological theories of Mieke Bal, David Jobling and others, Bergen shows that the Elisha stories present prophetism in a negative light, confining prophets to a rather limited scope of action in the narrative world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: That Which Occupies the central and dominant place in what the Spirit has been pleased to record of the life of Elisha is the miracles performed by and connected with him. Far more miracles were wrought by him or were granted in answer to his prayers than any other of the Old Testament prophets. The character of Elisha's mission and ministry was in thorough keeping with Israel's condition at that time. The very fact that these miracles were needed indicates the state into which Israel had fallen. A.W Pink unfolds the life and miracles of Elisha in 30 power packed Chapters of this famous Prophet of God.

This will explain the absence of exegetical notes, and of all discussion of the points which have been raised, more particularly in connection with this portion of the Old Testament.” —From the Preface

Book Chariots of Prophetic Fire

Download or read book Chariots of Prophetic Fire written by R. J. Rushdoony and published by Chalcedon Foundation. This book was released on 2019-08-12 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a marked resemblance between our time and that of Elijah and Elisha. Theirs was a time of judgment; ours is as well. But there is a deeper resemblance. Their day was an age of syncretism, of radical compromise between the worship of the Lord and Baal worship. The two had been blended together to make one religion, so that a refusal to see the necessity for uncompromising religion marked Israel. Israel rarely denied the Lord or professed open apostasy. Rather, it pursued a course of religious syncretism, using the name of the Lord but absorbing with their religion whatever other faith was expedient for them. Thus, they were not open pagans, but pagans who practiced their unbelief under cover of the Lord's name. Syncretism is again our problem. Numerous forces, powers, and persons are accorded sovereignty over man. Today, Baal-worship is again prevalent in the name of the Lord. Humanistic statism is easily and readily submitted to by churchmen: children are placed in humanistic state schools, given into the hands of the enemies of God, and people are only indignant if you condemn this practice. The major concern of most church members is not the Lord's battles, nor the urgency to make a stand against compromise, but, “How can I best enjoy life?” The similarity does not end there. Elijah and Elisha's day was one of prosperity, a false prosperity that was largely the product of inflation. Our age, too, has been marked by an inflationary prosperity, and the loosening of moral and religious standards is one result. People want things, not qualities or virtues. This mindset demands more material wealth for men and diminishes the need for moral and educational performance and excellence. It is now a virtue to tolerate evil and to be intolerant of any material lack for man. In Chariots of Prophetic Fire, R J. Rushdoony challenges the Church of our day to resist compromise and the temptation of expediency, and realize that the power today does not lie in politics or governments but in God's men of faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In no character of the Bible, perhaps, is the life of Jesus, the SON of God, so perfectly mirrored as in Elisha, the MAN of God. His gentleness of spirit and holiness of life; the patience and faithfulness which must have characterized his teaching; and, above all, the marvelous and beneficent character of his miraculous deeds; were a prophecy in actual life of him who spake as never man spake, “who went about doing good”; and whose miracles proclaimed him to be “the Son of God with power.” The desire to direct the attention of students of the word of God with deeper interest to the beautiful and Christ-like character of the son of Shaphat, and thus incite to greater holiness of life, a more perfect consecration to the service of God, has led to the preparation of these chapters… R. Clarence Dodds From the Preface

Book excerpt: This fresh examination of the Elisha narratives found in 2 Kings 5, 6.8-23 and 6.24-7.20 leads to a new interpretation of them as didactic salvation stories set against the Aramaean military threat to ninth-century Israel. Moore shows how an ingenious literary artistry converges powerfully with contextual dynamics to explicate the surprising and subtle saving actions of Yahweh in a troubled time. Each of the stories offers its own fresh disclosure of the time-worn tradition expressed in Elisha's own name: 'God saves'.
