Book excerpt: This thesis is a study regarding the application of the Business Case framework in the context of an Enterprise 2.0 technology investment and more specifically in a Web-based project collaboration tool. When choosing to work on an online collaboration platform rather than using the traditional E-mail based communication platform, Enterprises are often unsure of the benefits and repercussions that such a choice can bring. In order to show if web-based collaboration platforms are a beneficial way for enterprise teams to conduct projects more effectively as well as efficiently, the author develops a Business Case comprising of a cost-benefit model as well as a sensitivity and risk analysis. Furthermore, a framework application (so called Cost-Benefit Cockpit) is developed. The research for developing the model will be conducted through a literature review as well as through a case study analysis of a project related to the Institute for Information Management (IWI) in Saint Gallen. Furthermore, the research is supported by interviews of selected project participants. The research as well as the cost-benefit model shows that web-based collaboration spaces do provide substantial hard as well as soft benefits. Theses advantages are mainly traced back to the efficiency gains enabled by the unified platform structure and the SaaS business model, which effectively centralises the work activity of a project's participants. A financial benefit model is constructed based on theses observations by linking the roles and responsibilities of platform users to their individual use of the platform's features. The main risks are constituted by the outsourcing of content to an external location and are raised the issues of data security and access. However, the precise quantification of the efficiency gains still poses a challenge and will necessitate further research.
