Book New Approaches to Specialized English Lexicology and Lexicography

Download or read book New Approaches to Specialized English Lexicology and Lexicography written by Marián Alesón and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers some of the latest approaches to Lexicology and Lexicography, which span from research on language for specific purposes to the study of lexical constellations and translation. It aims to present a multifaceted insight on current trends and, thus, includes papers that explore lexical processes in several areas, which comprise fields so diverse and riveting such as the language of cinema, fashion, tourism, and even comics. In addition, other papers examine the lexicon of well-established professional languages, such as the language of law, medicine and business, by revealing leading-edge perspectives on topics such as translation, word-formation, cultural clashes, or lexical selection. Key issues on learning and teaching are also considered, as part of a long tradition in the study of professional and academic languages that posits users’ learning needs as the cornerstone to the study of these languages. Therefore, this work proposes a strong emphasis on lexis and terminology, which are highlighted as the fundamental core of the definition and analysis of specialized languages. All in all, this publication intends, on the one hand, to embrace current trends in the study of specialized lexicon and terminology from the perspective of both Lexicology and Lexicography, and, on the other hand, to open new possibilities for future research.

Book Greek to Me Adventures of the Comma Queen

Download or read book Greek to Me Adventures of the Comma Queen written by Mary Norris and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Comma Queen returns with a buoyant book about language, love, and the wine-dark sea. In her New York Times bestseller Between You & Me, Mary Norris delighted readers with her irreverent tales of pencils and punctuation in The New Yorker’s celebrated copy department. In Greek to Me, she delivers another wise and funny paean to the art of self-expression, this time filtered through her greatest passion: all things Greek. Greek to Me is a charming account of Norris’s lifelong love affair with words and her solo adventures in the land of olive trees and ouzo. Along the way, Norris explains how the alphabet originated in Greece, makes the case for Athena as a feminist icon, goes searching for the fabled Baths of Aphrodite, and reveals the surprising ways Greek helped form English. Filled with Norris’s memorable encounters with Greek words, Greek gods, Greek wine—and more than a few Greek men—Greek to Me is the Comma Queen’s fresh take on Greece and the exotic yet strangely familiar language that so deeply influences our own.

Book The Liminal Worker

Download or read book The Liminal Worker written by Manos Spyridakis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-03 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Liminal Worker examines the experience of work, employment, employment insecurity and precariousness in a context of high unemployment and welfare state crisis in modern Greece. A theoretically-informed, anthropological exploration of the notion of work in contemporary western society and its relation to processes of political decision making, this book challenges the mainstream conception of work as an economic or purely productive activity, presenting a comparative analysis of work as a social phenomenon. Drawing on original empirical research, it explores the key themes of the transformation, experience, meaning and narrative of work and its relation to attendant social policies. A unique examination of the complicated experience of work and labour relations within power systems, institutions and organisations, as well as the reactions and survival strategies of ordinary actors facing precariousness in their daily existence, The Liminal Worker elaborates upon the notion of the anthropology of work and investigates the connection between ethnographic data (and its critical analysis) and the formation of policy. As such, it will be of interest to anthropologists, sociologists, policy makers and geographers concerned with questions of work, labour relations and policy formation.

Book Mediating the Nation

Download or read book Mediating the Nation written by Mirca Madianou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-11-12 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it mean to watch two-hour long news programmes every evening? Why are some people 'addicted' to the news while others prefer to switch off? Television is an indispensable part of the fabric of modern life and this book investigates a facet of this process: its impact on the ways that we experience the political entity of the nation and our national and transnational identities. Drawing on anthropological, social and media theory and grounded on a two-year original ethnography of television news viewing in Athens, the book offers a fresh, interdisciplinary perspective in understanding the media/identity relationship. Starting from a perspective that examines identities as lived and as performed, the book follows the circulation of discourses about the nation and belonging and contrasts the articulation of identities at a local level with the discourses about the nation in the national television channels. The book asks: whether, and in what ways does television influence identity discourses and practices? When do people contest the official discourses about the nation and when do they rely on them? Do the media play a role in relation to inclusion and exclusion from public life, particularly in the case of minorities? The book presents a compelling account of the contradictory and ambivalent nature of national and transnational identities while developing a nuanced approach to media power. It is argued that although the media do not shape identities in a causal way, they do contribute in creating common communicative spaces which often catalyse feelings of belonging or exclusion. The book claims a place in the emerging sub-field of media anthropology and represents the new generation of audience research that places media consumption in the wider social, economic and political context.

Download or read book Poetics of the Flesh written by Mayra Rivera and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Poetics of the Flesh Mayra Rivera offers poetic reflections on how we understand our carnal relationship to the world, at once spiritual, organic, and social. She connects conversations about corporeality in theology, political theory, and continental philosophy to show the relationship between the ways ancient Christian thinkers and modern Western philosophers conceive of the "body" and "flesh.” Her readings of the biblical writings of John and Paul as well as the work of Tertullian illustrate how Christian ideas of flesh influenced the works of Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Michel Foucault, and inform her readings of Judith Butler, Frantz Fanon, and others. Rivera also furthers developments in new materialism by exploring the intersections among bodies, material elements, social arrangements, and discourses through body and flesh. By painting a complex picture of bodies, and by developing an account of how the social materializes in flesh, Rivera provides a new way to understand gender and race.

Book Funding the Greek Crisis

Download or read book Funding the Greek Crisis written by Constantinos Ikonomou and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one distinguish between European Union investments that improve welfare and those that create economic malaise? Funding the Greek Crisis: The European Union, Cohesion Policies, and the Great Recession explores the sources of the Greek Crisis that lie primarily in EU policies that appeared to have worked better for other countries but not for Greece. Without overly simplifying the Greek condition, it provides insights into policies the countries of the euro area may need to implement in order to ensure collective cohesion and individual success. Arguing that EU preferences for autonomous investments discouraged organic development with lasting implications, Funding the Greek Crisis sheds new light on the nature of regional competitiveness and public economics. - Encompasses public economics, macroeconomics, international trade, competitiveness, microeconomics and regional development studies - Sheds light on key policies that affect millions of EU citizens - Examines Solow's growth model - Provides a different way of explaining growth from real business cycle theory
