Book Elements of Classical Thermodynamics For Advanced Students of Physics

Download or read book Elements of Classical Thermodynamics For Advanced Students of Physics written by A. B. Pippard and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1964 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laws of thermodynamics are amongst the most assured and wide-ranging of all scientific laws. They do not pretend to explain any observation in molecular terms but, by showing the necessary relationships between different physical properties, they reduce otherwise disconnected results to compact order, and predict new effects. This classic title, first published in 1957, is a systematic exposition of principles, with examples of applications, especially to changes of places and the conditions for stability. In all this entropy is a key concept.

Book Elements of Chemical Thermodynamics

Download or read book Elements of Chemical Thermodynamics written by Leonard K. Nash and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text addresses the use of purely thermal data in calculating the position of equilibrium in a chemical reaction. Its argument highlights the physical content of thermodynamics, as distinct from purely mathematical aspects. Methods are limited to a very few of the most elementary operations of the calculus, all of which are explained in an appendix. Readers need no more than a sound background in high school mathematics and physics, as well as some familiarity with the leading quantitative concepts of an introductory college chemistry course. An introduction establishes the fundamentals of temperature, heat and work, reversibility, and pressure-volume work. The first principle of thermodynamics is explored in terms of energy, enthalpy, thermochemistry and Hess's Law, heat capacity, Kirchhoff's equations, and adiabatic processes. Considerations of the second principle of thermodynamics encompass the Carnot cycle, the concept of entropy, and evaluation of entropy changes. The consequences of thermodynamic principles are examined in chapters on the free energies, the Clapeyron equation, ideal solutions and colligative properties, and the equilibrium state and equilibrium constant. Numerous problems appear throughout the text, in addition to 30 fully worked illustrative examples.

Book Continuum Thermodynamics and Constitutive Theory

Download or read book Continuum Thermodynamics and Constitutive Theory written by Christina Papenfuß and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents different thermodynamic approaches in the area of constitutive theory: thermodynamics of irreversible processes, rational thermodynamics, and extended thermodynamics. These different approaches are analyzed with respect to their presuppositions, as well as to their results, and each method is applied to several important examples. In many cases these examples are archetypes for numerous technologically important materials; i.e. complex materials having an internal structure. Some of the examples dealt with in this book are liquid crystals, colloid suspensions, ans fiber suspensions. The book well serves students and researchers who have basic knowledge in continuum mechanics and thermodynamics. It provides a systematic overview of the vast field of thermodynamic constitutive theory, beginning from a historical perspective and concluding with outstanding questions in recent research.

Book Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics

Download or read book Elements of Continuum Mechanics and Thermodynamics written by Joanne L. Wegner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-13 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text is intended to provide a modern and integrated treatment of the foundations and applications of continuum mechanics. There is a significant increase in interest in continuum mechanics because of its relevance to microscale phenomena. In addition to being tailored for advanced undergraduate students and including numerous examples and exercises, this text also features a chapter on continuum thermodynamics, including entropy production in Newtonian viscous fluid flow and thermoelasticity. Computer solutions and examples are emphasized through the use of the symbolic mathematical computing program Mathematica®.

Book Elements of Environmental Engineering

Download or read book Elements of Environmental Engineering written by Kalliat T. Valsaraj and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-06-09 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised, updated, and rewritten where necessary, but keeping the clear writing and organizational style that made previous editions so popular, Elements of Environmental Engineering: Thermodynamics and Kinetics, Third Edition contains new problems and new examples that better illustrate theory. The new edition contains examples with practical flavor such as global warming, ozone layer depletion, nanotechnology, green chemistry, and green engineering. With detailed theoretical discussion and principles illuminated by numerical examples, this book fills the gaps in coverage of the principles and applications of kinetics and thermodynamics in environmental engineering and science. New topics covered include: Green Chemistry and Engineering Biological Processes Life Cycle Analysis Global Climate Change The author discusses the applications of thermodynamics and kinetics and delineates the distribution of pollutants and the interrelationships between them. His demonstration of the theoretical foundations of chemical property estimations gives students an in depth understanding of the limitations of thermodynamics and kinetics as applied to environmental fate and transport modeling and separation processes for waste treatment. His treatment of the material underlines the multidisciplinary nature of environmental engineering. This book is unusual in environmental engineering since it deals exclusively with the applications of chemical thermodynamics and kinetics in environmental processes. The book’s multimedia approach to fate and transport modeling and in pollution control design options provides a science and engineering treatment of environmental problems.

Book The Four Laws That Do Not Drive The Universe

Download or read book The Four Laws That Do Not Drive The Universe written by Arieh Ben-Naim and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-08-14 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a clear and mystery-free presentation of the central concepts in thermodynamics — probability, entropy, Helmholtz energy and Gibbs energy. It presents the concepts of entropy, free energy and various formulations of the Second Law in a friendly, simple language. It is devoid of all kinds of fancy and pompous statements made by authors of popular science books who write on this subject. The book focuses on the Four Laws of Thermodynamics. As it is said in the dedication page, this book is addressed to readers who might have already been exposed to Atkins' book having a similar title. It challenges both the title, and the contents of Atkins' book, Four Laws That Drive The Universe. One can glean from the title of this new book that the author's views are diametrically opposed to the views of Atkins. The book is addressed to any curious and intelligent reader. It aims to tickle, and hopefully to satisfy your curiosity. It also aims to challenge your gray matter, and to enrich your knowledge by telling you some facts and ideas regarding the Four Laws of Thermodynamics.
